Are the earlier seasons available free on Netflix or Amazon Prime? In my neck of the woods cable is at least a decade in the future and all a regular TV antenna gets is two public broadcast stations. I prefer to start watching with the first episode anyway. Usually the first season or two of a series are the best.

If that was Naval Station Mayport then they much have done some really expensive work on the shipping berths. Sure as heck didn't look that way when I was there in mid '67.Carrier berths used to normally only have two carriers USS Saratoga and the USS Franklin D Roosevelt CVA42. They could accomodate a third on which they did on occasion. Sometimes the USS Essex or USS Hornet would come in after doing manned space craft recovery. The destroyer fleet was being served by the USS Yellowstone. They used to joke about her being stuck in the coffee grounds since she had been tied up at the same spot for years. This is to be the final series of shows still all in all a pretty good show. Funny thing in all of the war movies you see very few where the snipes are doing their watches. They had a short segment when they lit off one of the BB's boilers. That segment was in the movie "battleship". I do not recall anyone ever while I was on board our ship and commercial or movie producer taking snaps down in any of the engineering spaces. Still have a few I took when on board. Frank

Wow, just watched the first episode of the new season. Got in trouble with the boss when I uttered an exclamation upon seeing the operative in that black plunging neckline evening gown, Wow!

I've been watching it since the beginning. Good show, but it does tend to get a little out there at times.
I'll give 'em credit. They certainly started this season with a bang!

I certainly agree with this post, the Mayport that I remember from the early 70s didn't look like the one shown in the Last Ship.
If memory serves me correctly the Carrier list by Frank46 were the ones I saw there and the reason they were there was Mayport is a shallow port and the more modern carriers draft was to deep to enter the port.
I do like the show but there is a plot gap in this season, the newly formed fleet! OK lots of people died during the pandemic got it, well the pandemic wouldn't effect a ship right?, so what happened to all the ships that were in port at North Fork, San Diego, Hawaii ETC? So now the South Americans have destroyed all the ships in the US fleet at Mayport with the exception of the Nathan James.....Come on give me a break.

Am liking the show. The good guys are not afraid of shooting the bad guys. Also it is not one of the newer "politically correct".

I wish they paid more attention to details.
All those ships were operating in water as shallow as one foot around the Marquesas on their chart.
Pretty impressive ships to do that.
I'm trying to like it being Navy and all, but it does get cheesy at times.

I watched the first few episodes.

They should have named it "The LOST Ship" after the equally terrible, non ending show LOST

The name of the show is a falsehood. It is not the LAST ship, the crazy Russian ship was out there and seems there may have been others.

Totally ridiculous bunch of nonsense.

Watch the old classic "On The Beach" or something.

I think I might have watched a bit of an episode--featured an admiral shooting a .50 machine gun at an attacking Argentine Pucara. In the army generals leave such light work to EM. Perhaps the navy is different but I nevertheless switched it off.

No navy in the world can get through an entire deployment without major repairs, and our navy gets gas every 3 days, soooo....
I have watched exactly one episode. As a career navy man, I hate it. As pure entertainment, it's ok.

Watch the old classic "On The Beach" or something.
The novel "The Last Ship" also featured a Russian sub that had been underwater when nuclear war commenced. The two ships met after the US one had found a habitable island. Never seen or heard of the show.

Yup, the show is (very) loosely based on that novel.

We used to watch the show on a regular basis until the writers jumped the shark and the ship's captain wandered the earth like Kung Fu, fighting UFC.

Figured I'd check it out again. Not too bad actually.
They will have my attention for a few more episodes and we'll see how cheesey it gets again.
The wife gave up on it just prior to the UFC deal, unlike me she requires dialog.
I like the new direction with the hacking angle.

If I recall correctly.the few episodes I watched, the Ship was always able to find some remote "port" that had lots of fuel, provisions and everything a ship could need. Even though everyone else was dead due to some pandemic!,

A quick search shows NO post by you in The Office.
I have no PM from you requesting such a correction.
So, how was this alleged request made?

I'll bet I can fix it.

There was a tv show featuring a U.S. sub some years ago. Don't recall the name of it though. I'm a sucker for naval tv shows. And just one very short section of the snipes lighting off one of the BB's boilers. But as usual they sacrificed correctness for the sake of the film. From cold iron anywhere from 4-8 hours to full steam. Gotta get the blowers running (steam turbine powered) boiler feed pumps again steam powered and fuel oil pumps also steam powered. You gradually heated the boiler slowly to avoid over expansion busted tubes and such. Engine room was way easier.
We had 3 boilers for each engine room and pump room. 4 enginerooms equals 12 boilers. In foreign ports it was always port or starboard for the engineering department. In an emergency we could open a cross connect valve to another set of boilers to get our engine room and pump room on line. But normally when lighting off open all the steam drains, and slowly crack open 1 of the 3 main steam valves from our set of boilers. So some poor fool would be on a small catwalk with the drains wide open, and slowly opening the three main steam valves. D modified boilers at 600 psi and up to 950 superheat temps. When you came down you looked like you fell in a pool as you were soaking wet with sweat including your shoes. There was a saying "hours of sheer boredom followed by seconds of sheer terror". Like the time we were taking on bombsm munitions and other things that go boom. And the ammo ship lost her steering and smashed into the flight elevator. 250,500,750 and 1000 pound bombs getting knocked off their pallets by the shock of the collision. I was up in the hanger bay when this happened.Where you going to run too???. So you wait until everything is sorted out and start getting the bombs back on their pallets and continue on taking more goodies aboard. Then on a lighter note, some genius decided that when a supply ship is done and we pull away he'd start throwing potatoes at the passing ship. Quite easy to do as you aren't that far away. The supply ship had their band playing when the attack of the killer spuds arrived. And yes some of those killer spuds were sent back by their intended victims. The master of arms went nuts trying to find the spud throwers. Didn't have any luck. this was repeated a time or two but the skipper laid down the law, Captains Mast and the brig. Frank

Looks like it is just going to be a repeat of the way too long drawn out story told in previous seasons.

The television show about the last submarine was called The Last Resort...
It didn’t last long and it ended kind of suddenly?
Did get off to somewhat of a good start though and had some decent actors in it.

Yes it is time for this one to end as well! But it was one of the better shows on television.

There was a program started on the CW network called Sun Records, very well done show about the beginnings of Rock and Roll,,,, but they shut it down after a few episodes?

What we need is more stupid Reality TV shows and stupid repeat shows from the past, such as Five-0 and now Magnum PI!

Default The Last Ship

They really lost me on todays episode. Nathan James gets shelled by an Iowa Class battleship. All three BB's are here in the states. So where did the one that holed the bow and starboard side come from?. And speaking of the Iowa Class battleships if they cut loose with a salvo of 16" shells Nathan James would be nothing but a hole in the water. Supposedly Cuba had the battelship. And Nathan James had some serious damage to the forward part of the ship. Yeah I know it's only a TV show but jeeze guys how about a cruiser light or heavy cruiser. That would be more believable. As it stands right now Nathan James is headed back to Florida (Mayport most likely) for repairs. Frank

Frank
Frank, while not serving in uniform I did spend 37 years working for the Navy as a civilian. Most of my time was spent working on steam propulsion plants including extensive work on USS New Jersey and Missouri. The first time I was in fire room when they were pressure testing the boilers and the safeties blew I almost went through the overhead.

I remember for some reason the ships at the Naval Station (mostly 1052's) had to leave in a big hurry and they took more than 10 hours to go from cold plant to moving under there own power. This was some emergency situation. I don't remember what it was though.

Alde, my ship only had d modified boilers rated at 600 psi and 950 degrees superheat. So we could get steam up a little faster than lets say the Saratoga which had 1200 psi and do not know at what superheat temps they operated at. The whole trick in lighting off is to gradually warm up the boiler and start producing steam. On our ship when lighting off the boiler feed pump was a reciprocating pump much like a bilge pump. When they had enough steam to run the two centrifical boiler feed pumps. Those ran at 600psi.but could be operated at lower pressures while the steam pressure was raised. Once they had 600 psi we'd open the main steam drains let them blow down and start one by one opening each of the three main steam valves in the enginroom. Once we had 600 psi steam from all three boilers we could start answering bells. The Roosevelt was a post WWII era aircraft carrier and as such pretty easy to operate its various systems. Just about everything was steam driven. Even the emergency enginroom bilge pump which could do 20.000 gallons per hour when and if the space was taking on water. Just open the main steam valve you'd hear the check valve slam open and she was pumping water. I had occasion on watch to use it because a line carried away in the enginroom and was flooding the lower deck. Stuck a damage control wood plug in the hole where the water was coming from and beat the heck out of it with a sledgehammer so it would stay in place. What fun.Frank

Even though I doubt that a Iowa class battleship could be brought online much less find a qualified crew to man her, my thoughts are this is a cliffhanger and the Cubans nor the Mexicans are responsible. Stay tuned till next week because I think this ship may be a internal threat brought to bear by a US fringe group.

When I was at the Philadelphia naval yard the USS New jersey was in drydock getting overhauled for service off the coast of Vietnam. our tour was limited to the main deck only as too much was being done below decks. Seeing those massive 16" guns up close and personal and the pics I had seen does not do them justice, you really had to be there. From the rumor mill I heard that they had to get some ex battleship sailors out of retirement to teach the younger sailors how things were supposed to run.Frank

$64.000 question, where is the battleship and from whom did they get it from?. Don't think with a single 5"54 they are going to do much damage unless they barrage their missles and torpedoes all at once. Battle ships were made to duke it out with other battleships. Yep two episodes left and will be interesting as to how this plays out. The current president basically shot himself in the foot with his confession. So wondering how long he'll last and maybe Tom Chandler will be the next president. Frank

Frank, My GF`s Dad was one recalled from retirement. He was a Chief Gunners Mate , soon after, President Reagan sent the New Jersey to the Med and shot back following the terrorist bombing of the Marine barracks in Lebanon. He got called back in `82.

Nathan James is no more. With the crew abandoning ship and in the boats. Admiral Chandler had all the remaining missles live and then roped the wheel heading towards the battleship and jumped off the nathan James before she rammed the battleship sinking both the battleship and the abandoned nathan james, Since the president in this movie proved to be of less than truthful in his dealings looks like Admiral Chandler might be the next president.Or he could finally take a well deserved retirement and spent time with his daughter. It could go either way. So like many of us the next instalment could prove to be very interesting. Then again since he's still single and has shown some affection for that black haired beauty who was strolling the hallways in a black dress could get married. So now we have three directions in which this series could go. Or maybe 4 as he could become head of the Navy. Only time will tell. Frank

Sometimes it is better to end a series with a bang rather than try to jump the shark.

I think it died in the middle, and was dragged back to life to get the last two seasons. But overall, I liked it. Just a bit weak on some detail.

There are a lot of possibilities should they decide to bring the series back.
Sad to see the Nathan James go to the bottom! One last hurrah for Chandler!
