This whole bear business seems to be getting out of hand.

Good script and good fortune but I have to guess was
it the bear spray that drove off X number of bears?

When in Bear country.....be prepared.

Glad to hear those folks came out of it alive.

.
Side Note;

A feller I did some mule trading with several years ago,
he and his hunting partner had a tangle with a couple of bears back in the fall of '94....

JACKSON HOLE, Wyo. - When hunting guide Nate Vance left his tent in the early morning darkness he quickly realized that the figure moving heavy logs off the food cooler was not the cook.

"I heard a "woof" and I smelled that awful breath," Vance says. "I knew I had stepped into a bad situation. I had surprised a bear." Not just any bear - a grizzly.

Vance, an outfitter from Cody, Wyo., survived his Sept. 5 encounter, but only after the grizzly clawed a gash in his head and mauled him.

The next morning, Vance's hunting partner, Todd Sanner, heard a noise while butchering an elk he'd killed the evening before. He looked up to see a grizzly bear charging him at full speed from only 60 yards away. Sanner fired his .44 magnum but the bear was on top of him within three to four seconds. The grizzly only bit his hand before running off, wounded, into the Teton Wilderness.

Here is the answer right from the old bears mouth. If you damned Tourists would stay out of our home, we would not feel the need to remove you, when you act like fools.

Let's go for a hike in the forest in bear country. Uh I don't think so. Bears aren't all friendly like Smokey the bear.

Let's hike along the Brazos river in Texas. Uh I don't think so. Gators get hungry and moccasins just stay in bad moods. Their motto is " don't tread on me".

Tommie Woodward could tell you about Texas alligators. If he were still alive, that is.

After being warned about a 12-foot gator in the bayou and being begged not to jump into the water at Burkhart's Marina near Orange, Texas, Woodward said, "Blank the alligators!" and dove in.

Quoting from one news source:

"Marina employee Michelle Wright cried as she told KDFM she had pleaded with him not to go in the water and then witnessed his death.

"'Next thing I know this girl is screaming and an alligator's got him,' Wright said. 'I saw his body floating face down and then he's up there for a couple seconds and then he gets dragged back down and pulled off.'

Woodward soon disappeared from view. His body was found two hours later."

R.I.P. Tommie.

FAR FAR FAR too many grizz now. I blame this problem DIRECTLY on the Craighead brothers and there know it all attitudes and research. Study in the Swan valley using DNA showed with out doubt there are far more grizzly's roaming around than the official biologist estimate. This well funded and conducted study is virtually ignored. Bears have not only been on the no hunting list but one can't even harass them away without special permission lest you violate some federal law. They fear nothing in the forest and now have moved onto the plains of which they originally were residents. The Indians warned Lewis and Clark of "the horrible bear". Virtually ignoring the warnings and found out the hard way. Now you kill an elk and it is a dinner bell for many of them. Sad when you have to have someone stand post while you field process your animal. I am not saying they need to be eliminated just that the fear of man needs to be put back into them so one sniff they avoid contact. A face full of bear spray and riddled with rubber bullets when they get too close to any man made food sources or human scent. Experiments show they are smart and learn this fast.
