Default It’s all about your priorities. . .

This is from 2016, but this year’s sign will be similar. From a school in hill country a little west of me . . .

I am guessing it is in a very conservative area. Kudos to them.

In Michigan's UP, many school districts close for firearms deer season. Other businesses also suspend operations. For many in this economically disadvantaged area, deer hunting supplies meat for the winter so the whole family gets involved.

I lived in a little west Texas town a number of years ago. The first week of deer season, businesses closed, males were conspicuous in their absence and the women were out celebrating. I remember going to a diner/niteclub on opening weekend when I first moved into town, the place was rocking with women. I had to ask the occasion, the waiter said," opening day of course". I found out that it was a common tradition.

The reason Eminence school closes during deer season is that a girl was walking down her lane to the bus when a St. Louis hunter shot her. She survived but that is the reason they close school. My wife taught there.

Urban legend. They close because attendance is down. I have lived and worked here for 54 years . . .

Was contacted to B&W Nuclear Technologies in Lynchburg VA when the French company Framatome acquired 50 percent of the company, at the start of VA deer season.

The new owners showed up from France, to find only us contract employees on the job, and all the locals unavailable. I don't speak French, but they were screaming bloody murder that their billions of dollars spent didn't warrant anyone from the company being there to assist them.

Our school district is closed on the first day of deer season. So are most businesses. It's a bad day to need your septic tank pumped. Ask me how I know....

Here a kid can get his first deer tag at 10 under the apprentice program where the must be accompanied by a qualified adult, and at 12 with a Hunters safety course. Plus, they get to start 2 days before the regular opening of deer season, during the annual Teachers convention.

Youth Deer Only Hunt at Fall Break

A youth hunt for deer limited to youngsters between the ages of 12–15 was approved for October 18–19, 2018. These dates coincide with Montana’s annual 2-day teachers’ convention, which are no-school days for most public school students.

Montana has a lot of neat programs. One is called home to hunt. If you used to be a resident who hunted, and still have relatives here you can "Come Home to Hunt" for about 1/2 off a non resident license.

Because I am over 62 all my deer and elk tags are just $8 each. Used to get my fishing and bird license free to, but, they stopped that.

If you set a slip from your Dr that you are not able to walk well, you can get a permit to shoot from you vehicle.

It used to be that if you were in poor health you could have someone shoot your deer for you, but I think that got abused and ended.

If you have certain disabilities your license is also 1/2 off. They even have a program for blind hunters, but I don't quite understand how that works. But, I a game warden come upon a blind guy with a gun and a dead deer with a tag he probably wouldn't ask many questions.

Then there is what my brothers and I call the Rhino tag. A guy called Rhino has a gas station, gunshop in Florence MT, when we lived there. Avid hunter. Every year put in for his moose permit. Never got one and after so many you go to a preferred list drawing. After a couple years there was a law suit and they changed that and he had to start over. Then he started having some problems, went to the Dr and they told him he had a cancerous brain tumor. Gave him less than a year. He loaded up his stuff and went over on the Ruby River and shot a real nice bull moose. Nobody, including the local wardens said anything about it. What are you going to do harass or ticket a dead man walking. Been real popular for that. The Rhino tag.

We had this back when I went to school there in the late 50's. The seniors were allowed out of classes until you got your buck. Strangely, no body got one until the last day of the season. We also could get excused for beaver trapping season as it was a big money maker.

Well, I'm just happy that some folks still understand what's important.
I think most of the hunters are providing meat for their family's.

I miss Rhino, bought a few guns there and heard a few stories.

My school let out for the first day of deer season. Some of us took an extra day or two on top of that. When we came back we went straight to the principals office to pay the price. We all thought it was worth it.

"Yahooing". I'm not familiar with that term. Are you talking about guys whoopin' and hollerin' when they get their deer, or you talking about a bunch of yahoos with guns runnin' around in the woods? I've seen quite a few of the latter.

Yahooing is in reference to the action in local bars. Deer season is major money maker for many small towns. Some say “professional entertainers”
come out from the cities to help out.

In Maine, many of the guys I went to college with had school closings when they were young to assist in potato harvesting. Like a week I believe. Certain counties. Pretty much free “slave labor” lol. Hunting sounds like a lot more fun to me! Not sure if this is still done, but may be.

I was raised Catholic. My home church had a early Hunter's mass during big game season. Once the Priest mentioned he forgot to get ammo for his 270. When the collection basket went by me it looked like he was going to be able to shoot plenty of deer

Here in SW Wyoming, many bars, eating establishments and other businesses have "Hunter's Widow" nights through out deer and elk season. I don't think they close school anymore but did when I first moved here 30 years ago. When I first moved to Wyoming in the early 80s the town I lived in did have a school holiday for opening day of deer season.

When I grew up in S.D. we didn't get a day off but you didn't need much of an excuse to get a Friday or Monday off. But back then many of the farm kids missed school for harvest. (when the tax base was determined by Ag. values as long as the kids got their homework done it was accepted they were going to miss a couple days for corn picking.
