Default Back from the elk hunt. Ugh.

Golly. I never thought I could get so darn tired!

For the last few years, I've always gone up into the mountains with sons and grandkids for either the deer or elk hunts. We set up the big wall tent and wood stove, and I spend the week with my Dutch ovens and skillets cooking for the crew.

Several months ago, I told my fourteen-year old grandson, Brig, that if he drew a bull elk tag this year, I'd cook for him. Didn't think he'd luck out, but, by golly, he did. So, on Friday, September 21st, I was up at 10,000 feet manning the cook stove and fire pit.

After six days of hiking, glassing, scouting, and even more hiking and glassing, Brig came up empty. But, bless his heart, he said he had a great time just being in the outdoors and camping. (He even said the food was "amazing," but I'm thinkin' he said that just to make sure I'd come up again next year.)

Here are a few pictures taken that week.

First, here I am with my border collie, Suzy (camp dog supreme).

Here are a few shots of the area.

Poor Brig after hiking three or four days since 5:00 a.m., and glassing for six hours.

And finally, Brig gets to ride out on the last day.

All in all, a good time, but I'm sure glad to be back home and to sleep in a real bed. As good as my old canvas bedroll is, it doesn't beat my bed at home.

Looks like a GREAT trip. Wonderful memories for you both. No food pics? Guarded by the "Bear" gun you're packing of course!

Deer season starts here next weekend,Texas Hill country isn’t mountains but the hunting is good and being off hunting is hard to beat. Envy you being up in the mountains hunting already this year. Sorry he didn’t get his bull but he will remember the hunt.

Beautiful photos, I want to go next year, I volunteer to clean up from the cooking.

Was this the same grandson that nailed the big muley a couple of years ago?

Have a blessed day,

Leon

Wow, thank you for sharing the great story and pictures!

That is a hunt that I’m sure he will remember his entire life!

I sure miss my hunting partner (my dad), and wouldn’t trade those memories for anything!

You know, I think I got as many elk waking up from a nap as I did hunting for one. I can think of at least three.

50 years from now, when you are off to the big trail head in the sky. Brig will tell his grandkids how he hunted with his grampa. And maybe he will still be using the cast iron he got from you, when you were through with it. Good job Mule Packer!!!

That's why it called Hunting and not catching.
I'm sure Brig will remember the great time spent with you.

It is wonderful that both of you ( grandad and grandson) have had these experiences. They will be great memories for both of all your lives. I have grandkids in college now, so spend time with them while you can.

Mule Packer; I love the first photo of you, the pooch, and the wall-tent; black and white gives it that look like the photo could be from a hunting camp 70-80 years ago. I'd mount that photo on my den/office wall. Thanks for posting.

Default That is an amazing...

That is a really amazing trip for a young man like that, especially these days. Worn out and no Elk? Not as important as the experience you two shared. That is a real legacy to future generations of your family. The influence will be there long after we are all gone.

I'm absolutely sure that Brig will treasure the time you two suffered for a week, but had the time of your lives.

He is lucky to have a grandfather like you and you are lucky to have a grandson like him. Hunting together in the beautiful mountains, few things could be better than that.

This photograph is an instant classic. I see no reason at all for you not to enlarge this to 11x14, print it on non-glossy paper, matte it in a thick pure white cotton rag matte, and frame it in a black frame...the classic way to exhibit fine black and white photographs.

I'm sure you were tired, but just as sure you wouldn't trade the time for time spent doing something else, something more mundane.

Besides, it isn't the results that count, it's the experience that's important.

Nice looking camp and location. Still another month here before the general opening. I am going to set my ten camp up again this year. Good tent camp is more comfy than a camper.

I am sure you had a good time even if you missed your beb and the food was fine,

I used to tramp all over the country and got my game. Then, I figured out it was mostly about being in the right place at the right time. Now I do a lot of going to the right places and just spending time there. If I doze off and have me a nap, I figure it as being real patience. Got to give the game time to get there too. I always get my deer. Not as many elk though cause to many of the really right places are farther from a road than I am willing to pack out an elk anymore. More of setting up an ambush and waiting for some to be traveling though. Let the young guys set them to traveling.

Yup. Makes me wonder what it would look like in sepia.

I always wanted to be able to be a woodsman, camper, hunter, but it just is not there. I like to shoot too much, I guess, so never learned the woods skills. Too late now!

Got some envy though! :-)

All in all, a good time, but I'm sure glad to be back home and to sleep in a real bed. As good as my old canvas bedroll is, it doesn't beat my bed at home.
I know exactly what you mean. Just got back from a few days in the desert on an antelope hunt. We had a wonderful time, but I have learned that time and gravity are no man’s friend. Sleeping on the ground just ain’t what it used to be, and I’m ready for my own bed now! Glad you guys had a good time. I remember the hunting trips I did with my Granddad very fondly.

Great story and pics.
Just got back from an archery elk hunt.
We tried an old area we hunted about 20 years ago. Drew a big fat blank. I came home early as business was pressing me for time.
Got a text from my brother. They finally found some elk and his son in law called in his first bull. Bull never presented a clean shot and walked away. Wish that I could have been there for that.
Mule Packer, I sympathize with the sleeping situation. Second morning we woke up to 19 degrees. My coffee pot was frozen almost solid and took forever to start perking. Was nice to be home and wake up to 68 degrees, two pointers waiting for me in the kitchen and a 5 minute wait for coffee!!
