Today is National One Hit Wonder Day
It’s that one song that made them famous and it was a hit and they had no others.
So what’s your favorite?
Here are two of my favorites....

"California Sun" by the Rivieras.
I was an oldies disk jockey back in my misspent youth. I played a lot of the one hit wonders.
I saw the Tokens in concert at the Weinberg Center in Frederick, MD. The lead singer can still hit the high notes.

Transfusion by Nervous Norvus
Transfusion
Nervous Norvus
Not sure it was even a HIT! Was played over sound system befoe races at local stock car tracks in 50s.
Curious; I checked WIKIPEDIA: His novelty song "Transfusion" was a Top 20 hit in 1956, reaching No. 13 on Billboard's Hot 100 Chart.

Funny story about, Who Let the Dogs Out.
When my son was in high school he played football and their team was the Bulldogs. So every morning before a game his mother would blow him out of bed with that song! He hated it,and so did I for that fact but she kept the CD hid so no one could find it. He searched high and low for it but she only knew where it was and pulled it out on game days. Of course if we would have found it it would have been broken and discarded.
A lot of years have now gone by my son is now married and has two sons of his own. One day while searching for a book in the book shelf downstairs, low and behold I found it! Needless to say she knew he’d never look on the book shelves!
Needless to say the disc was broken and discarded!

Just goes to show that pop music is not always universal. Hot Chocolate had a bunch of hits in the UK.

A couple of my favourites.
Both songs have fantastic hooks. I first heard Birdhouse on a late night TV show in the UK at a buddy's flat. I said right then it was a possible #1 and would be a top ten at least.

About "Play that funky music".
My friend and session player Ron Mancuso wrote it. He was in a studio in Pittsburgh working on a track for a commercial. He, and the other players, were not giving the client what he wanted. The client got frustrated and told them that he was taking a long lunch and for them to come up with something better by the time he got back as it was costing him money.
After a bit they huddled out back and passed a bud around. They went back in, started throwing things around with a 2-track running.
The client came back, listened to the tape and fired them all.
Months later a guy called him and said he really liked one of the grooves they laid down and would he sell it. Promises were made, gifts exchanged and Ron got a check for $500.
Ouch!!
Ron went on to a great career as an 'A lister' with several labels. He had a manufacturers rep firm that his son now owns.
As Maxwell said: "he missed it by this much".

Was with my Bro in his Beetle.
We were returning to his Memphis apt.
Just as he turned into his parking lot, it started playing.
He turned into his parking place and we just sat there and listened to all of the song.
What happened?
They threw something off the bridge?
This many years later, it’s still a mystery!

I'm not a music follower but Don Mclean's American Pie elicited a unique reaction at 4am, in a NY bar, that made me remember it.
1970's, closing time, everyone preparing to leave, when the song comes on the radio. The half dozen small groups of customers heading toward the door, stop in their tracks and start singing the song, then line up at the bar, chorus like, and belt out the song at the top of their lungs.
Song ends, patrons silently disperse. Surreal.

Was a teenager living in Tallahatchie County going to West Tallahatchie High School when this came out - it was played on WHBQ (Memphis) often - seemed like every other song. It was a mystery to us as to what they threw off the Tallahatchie Bridge. in fact, there are a number of bridges across the Tallahatchie River, in multiple counties.
I don't think Bobbie Gentry ever had another big hit like this.

A call to Forum Order here:
Several of the songs listed are not true "One Hit Wonders" They may be chart busters or well remembered, but the group or singer had several popular songs.
So by definition not actual "One Hit", they had more than one popular song.
Pandora listeners can set up a One Hit Station.
Carry On.

How about In A Gadda Da Vida, Iron Butterfly? They did other stuff I think, but I thought they were awful songs and didn't even listen to them all the way through. IIRC, we wore out our LP of the song playing it at every party we had.

Song ends, patrons silently disperse. Surreal.
