Anybody have a similar incident?
I was rooting around in a mainly unused(storage) room at home and came across a Minolta SRT101 35mm camera and bag. My wife isn't in to cameras and my daughter is from the digital age and wouldn't use something as archaic as a film camera. I have no idea where we got it.
I don't evenly know how available film is anymore. It's a shame the cameras I did buy are about worthless now.

There are still purists who shoot film, and yes, film is still available...just not as many varieties.

There's still a certain "look" to photos made with film that, in my opinion, digital can't match, no matter how powerful an imaging program might be.

From a monetary standpoint, you're right...your old Minolta is basically worthless. Might get you fifty bucks on a trade in at a camera store.

I hate to tell everyone this, but with both Canon & Nikon introducing mirrorless cameras in the last few months, your digital SLR will soon be joining your film SLR in the obsolete box.

I don't think photographers who have invested thousands in two or three pro camera bodies are going to be in a big hurry to throw their cameras into the obsolete box.

I wouldn’t bet on that. Some photographers are like those that just have to have the latest and greatest cell phone.

The News/sports photographers have mostly gone digital, but the artistic/wedding/portrait photographers may still prefer film. But, I doubt if it will me much longer before those too will succumb to the digital world.

I have a Nikon F2 Photomic and a few lenses sitting on my shelf gathering dust, cost wise probably $1500+ and it was all replaced by a Cannon A1100 IS, 12.1mp that cost me $100 about 5 years ago. 4x zoom, a whole range of controls inc. video and it can fit in my shirt pocket. But my wife's newer cell phone a Samsung S8 has as good or better camera built in.

That's okay. I'm pretty sure revolvers are obsolete, and I still use one of those just fine.

The professional photographer I know is doing all his work with digital cameras now.
He used to haul a view camera out into the woods for some shots.
Last time he used it was 10 years ago.

According to Ken Rockwell, who has a pretty decent camera sight and is a professional photographer, lens are what pro's invest in, the bodies are used and sold when the latest and greatest come out.
According to him, mirrorless will be as big or bigger a revolution as digital was.
And yes, film is still king to almost a snob like degree with some pro photographers.

My simpleton answer.

I have very few pictures on film. I have mega gazillions on digital.

It's like my life started when I joined the 20th century, 0r is this the 21st?

I still love revolvers.

I have a friend who's into photography. I asked him which of my B&W photos were film and which ones were digital (I had a wall full at the time), and he guessed almost all of them opposite of what they were!

Spend a couple of grand on a Mamiya645. Now worthless for the most part.
I had all the Mamiya lenses but the perspective shift and soft focus lenses. Two viewfinders and three screens. And a bunch of film inserts in 120 and 220.

A Minolta SRT101 was state of the art in 1972!

...that will be a shame when the mirror SLRs go...

...it's a wonderful mechanism...

...I have three old Exakta SLRs...the mirror on those doesn't drop until you wind the film...

Honywell SpotMatic a Pentax SLR.
One of my favorite 35mm cameras, I had two bodies and 28mm, 50mm 85mm and 150mm all Pentax and Konica 400mm.

At one time or other I had six different high-end (Canon and Nikon) 35mm SLRs, two 6x6 TLRs (Rollei and Mamaya), plus two 4x5 view cameras and darkroom equipment to match. I sold (or threw away) most everything over the past 5-7 years, didn't get much for anything, except for the view cameras and a Rolleiflex. Film is still available, but you might have to order it over the internet these days. I replaced all of that stuff with a simple Nikon Coolpix L30 point and shoot digital. Along with Photoshop, it's all I need. And long ago, in the early 1960s, I had that same model Exakta SLR. Hot stuff at the time until I got a Nikon F about 1966.

I'm not at all sure revolvers are obsolete. S&W and Ruger still sell whole bunches of them.

I wonder what he could use today that would give the astounding depth of field he got in his day. I'm sure there must be cameras equal to the task, but what he accomplished was unbelievable to this ignorant old geezer.
