Sea week in Setubal (my hometown)
Yes, "Sea week" is on. This year we didn't get any of the surviving sister ships "Great Banks four mast schooners" ("Creoula" and "Santa Maria Manuela", both from 1938), too bad because they are most elegant vessels and always a pleasure to see.
But, we had the imposing NRP(Ship of the Portuguese Republic) Sagres III, a school ship from our Navy, built in Germany in 1937, (it was one from a series of school ships built for the "Kriegsmarine" in the1930s that after the war were delivered as "war reparations" to several Countries(this particular one went to Brazil. And was bought by us in 1962 to replace the similar, but getting old, Sagres II). It is a "sister ship" of your USCGC Eagle (WIX-327))
The pictures are lousy. Sorry. And are coming sideways. Blast!

I'm afraid to look at the pictures, I might fall off the deck!
Just kidding!
Have a blessed day,
Leon

You know, the Gorch Fock class (from which belongs our Sagres and your Eagle) were specifically designed against capsizing. They are able to recover from an almost 90 degree heel.

Your biggest worry would be falling on the deck from a yardarm.
Sidenote. A friend of mine went around the World on her when he was a cadet in the Naval Academy. That, is being lucky. A round the World trip for free. of course he had to work is arse off during the trip. Including climbing all the way up to the heights of the masts.
Maybe it wasn't for free afterall.

Actually, I did not know that!
I am confident that I wasn’t designed that way!

Hey! You're Air Force!
Your're supposed to recover from an 180 degree heel.

It's a pitty but. We're are under warning for the approach of hurricane Leslie.I was expecting to take pictures of the lighted ship, as she was yesterday, but on my way home I noticed they unrigged the lights as a precaution.
It's almost 21:00 here, it just started raining and the wind is rising.

I have a lot of respect for wind powered sailors. Requires skill and nerve to go out to sea on something that size.

Interesting!
Is that caused by Coriolis?
Cropped out the beam, left most of the Flags and the Ship’s Name
Co·ri·o·lis ef·fect
an effect whereby a mass moving in a rotating system experiences a force (the Coriolis force ) acting perpendicular to the direction of motion and to the axis of rotation. On the earth, the effect tends to deflect moving objects to the right in the northern hemisphere and to the left in the southern and is important in the formation of cyclonic weather systems.

Now you really got me stumped.
But I once saw a video made somewhere in Africa, in a place that is crossed by the equatorial line, to the North of the line water in a sink swirled clockwise and to the South the water swirled counter clockwise.
Or was it the other way around? (Scratches head)
