Default Buying a new car

My daughter is in the market for a new car and asked my wife and I for input. She has it narrowed it down to either a 2018 used Jeep Cherokee or a new 2018 Mazda CX5. Realistically how much of a discount can we hope to get of the sticker on the Mazda?

What’s the warranty on the Jeep? The Mazda? Is the warranty on the Jeep transferable? How many miles on the Jeep?

I am very impressed with my wife's new Honda CRV. A lot of great features for a very good price. AND it's a Honda.

My main question is what is a reasonable expectation on a discount off of sticker which is around $32000 on the CX5.

I checked Autotrader and did a 400 mile radius search of the Pittsburgh area and these were the cheapest prices listed for a CX-5. Doesn't look like they are coming down off the MSRP for this 2018 car, you might look at some others models.

Default Buying a new car

We just bought our Daughter a 2017 Nissan Sentra for an awesome price and she could not be happier, the price was outstanding as well.

Her warranty covers the car for 100K miles.

A better question is what is the dealer invoice price? Knowing that would give you a better starting point. For example, dealer invoice on a new $32k MSRP could be around $27k. Figuring that the dealer needs a cut for their work, you might be able to drive away with a sales price of $28.5 - $29k plus tax and license.

I recently gave my oldest daughter my 2012 Toyota Rav4 SUV and it had a 195k miles on it and still looked great and everything worked perfectly. The whole time I owned it I only had one repair and that was to replace the front wheel bearings. My wife and I recently rented a new RAV4 while we were in Montana and we were very impressed with it and I noticed on Autotrader you could pick up a one year old RAV with about 30K miles on it for well under $20K.

^ This. Mazda dealers are not about to discount their hot seller in a hot sector of the vehicle market right now.

We have a 2016.5 CX-5 that we leased 1 1/2 years ago and it is probably the best car we have had-all things considered-and we have had some good ones. Depending on how much she drives, a lease might be a good option.

I have a 2016 Mazda CX-5 that's been a terrific vehicle. Mine is the AWD model. Over here in Australia, Mazda 3 and Mazda CX-5's are always in the top 10 auto sales figures. Sometimes even top 5.

New car...I was just out in Monroeville at the Subaru dealer. The Impreza comes in sedan or hatchback, and you can pick up a nicely equipped one in the mid $20s, 2019 new. And All wheel drive which is great for our PGH weather. I may buy one next month. The Subaru has a good reputation; I may find out. Good luck!

Just helped my step daughter get her 2018 CX5. She loves the car. I haggled back and forth with the dealer on price - at one point we were $4.00 apart - but they didn’t come down much. My main concern was for her to make her monthly payments - that’s where the 4 bucks came into play. In the end, she got what she wanted and could afford. Her dealer wasn’t all that interested in negotiating a deal.

Give it some cooling off time and even do a short term lease right now .Dealers are not going to do a true discount much as we are heading into Holiday season and then income tax return season the two busiest and best dealer seasons for used cars .Wait until the heat of summer if you want to get a dealer to truly discount .I would watch car auctions on line to get an idea of what dealers are paying for used cars with general same characteristics .Remember a New Car dealership especially can put any mile warranty on the "drive train" as they know truthfully the electronic stuff us what is going to give you a fit if anything plus they will make enough money servicing tne vehicle to repair or replace anything that does go wrong with the " drive train" .Bought 2 brand new vehicles one with a" life time warranty on the drive train" the other 5 year 100k mile . Guess what ? I have spent over 25 hundred bucks getting computers reprogrammed so on and so forth since 2012 and what truly chaps my hide is many models have to go back to the dealership to be reprogrammed or get false warning signals cut off .Do I think much of "drive train" warrantees . Nope I sold a 1985 Chevy PU w 250k on original tranny and engine that still ran good .yes it had been kept up and not abused .These guys have the know how to build drive trains that if serviced will last a lifetime of non abuse if they want to . Now they are useing technology against us American consumers. Check the complaint boards for electronic problems before purchase, and check dealer only autu auctions for actual selling price of models to see true value or get a friend in the banking business to tell you what the true loan value of a model is for a person with say average credit just to make it fair.Trust me the bank won't lend more money than what the collateral is worth there fore that is a good estimate of what the vehicle is worth .How do I know .Years of making mistakes and asking questions of folks smarter than me .Looking to replace my bought new pickup looking something built maybe in the 80s that tne guy across the street can work on . Seriously though rising interest rates spell trouble for auto sales check out Fords last quarter sales my advice is hold and wait when you see a few car sales men standing in the welfare time to buy .Beware of autos that were repossessed as anyone who can't make their car payment certainly can't keep it serviced .Wanted to add electronic problems didn't start until the limited bumper to bumper warranty ran out .Could it be I was just unlucky? Sure . On two brand new vehicles from different dealer ships and different brands .No not unlucky. I just didn't do my due dilligence as I'm not a child of the technology age but I'm catching on . I'm actualy typing this on a IPad that is 10 or more years old I can't remember as I bought it used .It has a cracked screen ,the case is completely worn out thus the cracked screen .The on and off power button was smashed in the same accident so I just let it turn itself off and that is working fine far a year so far .In auto miles this this would have at least 200 K on it and would have been totaled by my car insurance company .Yet here it is working just fine .So if they can build something this tough that takes this kind of abuse and still does its job for a few hundred bucks .They can't build an automobile for 35 thousand that the electronics hold up in . As Forest Gump would say ,"I'm not a real smart man but even I know what a ripoff looks like.Make them warrantee the electronics for at least the life of the loan if financing and say the life of the average loan if paying cash .No dealership new or used will do it .Why? Only they know and they aren't saying .

I tried to steer her towards a Subaru but no go.
She really likes the CX5. We saw one yesterday at a big fall festival that she fell for. It was the Grand Touring with the Bose sound system in black. I guess she got that from me. I like a shined up black car.
I think if the Jeep she drove was black she'd have bought it.
Before this weekend I didn't realize how hot a ticket the CX5 is. Car & Driver mag gives it good marks. A top safety pick.
My concern is like yours. I don't want to see her tie up her money in just a car payment.
One dealer we visited is quoting $400 a month for a 3yr/15000 mile lease which I thought was high but I don't know. The nice thing about the lease is the low down payment going in and the shorter term. In three year she can buy it for $15K. Currently she'll average about 11,500 miles just in commuting back and forth to work. Once you factor in fun time 15K might be close.
One other good thing is that she is a non-smoker and keeps her cars meticulously clean.
Who knows maybe in three years I'll buy it if I'm still around.

It's my experience that you can do allot better (discount wise) on a new car vs old one. New cars almost always have factory to dealer incentives and dealers always have quotas to meet (in order to maintain their factory kickbacks.) They NEED to move new cars, even if at a small initial loss (they still make $) I've got American (and some foreign) brand dealers to come down 20% in some instances ( Not Toyota or Honda). You still need to work for the biggest discount but there is low hanging fruit if you don't haggle well.
Used cars are generally priced by a computer algorithm these days. That price is set so that the used car WILL sell in X days. If it doesn't they just wholesale it to another dealer . The factory doesn't care if they sell used cars.

FWIW, my last new vehicle was a leftover Nissan Frontier LE in 07. I got near $6K off the $30.5K sticker.

I took today off so we are going back out to look.
The Mazda dealer we were at Sat. factored in about $1500 in incentives into his price but was quoting 9.9% financing. I told him that wasn’t an option. If that was his best we’d get our own financing.
I hate buying a car. I always feel I got hosed. I don’t want her to either.

A "ballpark" number is around 18% markup on a full size car, and around 12-13% on smaller cars. Using the mid priced model of that auto The cheaper base priced model have the least markup.

Sometime timing can be a big help, especially when new models are about to be announced and you are interested in the old model.

Hyundai Santa Fe's are rated pretty highly and I know a few people that have them and really like them. They come with a factory 100k mile warranty and are reasonably priced on the used market. It might be an option instead of spending $30,000 on a CX-5.

Exactly.
I just ordered a new Silverado.
I told them what I wanted and said make me your best deal so I don’t have to shop around. They showed me the invoice and said we will sell it at $1000 over invoice. That was roughly $2500 under the sticker price on a $61,500 vehicle.
I took it.
I’m not 100% confident that the invoice is real or accurate, but I thought it was a decent number relative to the sticker.

I have a 2016 AWD GT version. I bought it over the Honda CRV and the lying Toyota company’s RAV 4.
When I got mine it was sort of a sleeper crossover SUV, now the word is out and CX5’s are everywhere.
My neighbor has been test driving them with his daughter, she’s looking for the Touring version FWD.
Just this past Sat they went to the dealer looking to take one home, but they drove four vehicles and all had some sort of apparent rear seat vibration coming from either the drivetrain or tires. Three of them had the TMPS lights on. Could have been from sitting on the lot?
Dealer was supposed to bring one into the shop and have a tech look at it.
Just something to be aware of.
I consider the CX5 to be a great crossover.

I bought a new CX-5 In April and love it. My only wish is that they would have a class for buyers to teach all the electronic gadgetry. There is a learning curve, at least for me.

Over invoice / under invoice..

What is least known ,that the " invoice " is the dealers MSRP "

What the customer does not see is, what's called the " Hold Back " + the dealers incentives, paid in cash or the ability to order special models /colors etc.

Rebate given to the dealer after the sale.... That said the dealer could sell all day at INVOICE and still make a bucket of money.

And let's not forget the " EXTRAS " in the finance office, extended warranty, paint protection, floor mats, ETC..

If she can wait until the 2019 models hit the floor the prices on the 2018s may be more reasonable.

I bought a 2019 Jeep Cherokee Latitude this past May. Its the base model, the only option was the $700 cold weather package (can believe they sell that in FL....LOL) and the MSRP was about $27,500. I paid $22,000 plus TTL. It has been absolutely trouble free and with the 2.4 liter engine and 9 speed auto so far I average 30mpg.
I used True Car when I started car shopping. Its a great way to get price quotes from dealers. I've also heard if you are a Costco member they can get you great deals. They are considered the largest "car dealer" in the US

Have any of you had problems with the "gas in the oil" problem with the CRV's I recently read about?

I think the finance guy is the worst part of the whole car buying experience. They keep on and on and on about buying the extended warranty, paint and fabric protection, extended service plan, etc etc and every bit of it is a waste of money and pure profit in the dealers pocket. NEVER fall for their Bullsh** sales tactics

Just drove a used 2018 CX-5 at work today and it is a nice car. I prefer the Toyota RAV-4, but that is not what you ask.

This time of year some brands give rebates on last year's models, but the selection is slim.

Most new cars are sold through buyer clubs. The ones I have used are COSTCO and USAA. The salesman I talked to said that only about 20% of his sales are to customers who walk in the door cold. Most customers work out the deal and pick out the car on-line or through a buyer club.

Buy at the end of the month when the interest is due on the unsold cars.

Have kids? No borrow some dress them in play ripped clothes. Haggle, go slow. Show no exceitment. Walk around, sit, walk again.

Watch your loan percentage rates.

I ALWAYS go to 2-3 dealerships to get a good price. You will find out how cheap you can get it. You can have your service work done at any dealership for that brand, not just the dealer you bought it from. Larry

I have a strong connection at a Ford dealership.I can get you a triple net deal ( below invoice, holdback with rebates ) and have it shipped to you anywhere in the Continental USA.

I've been looking at the taller crossover vehicles lately, since so many of my passengers are mobility challenged, and struggle climbing in and out of my low sedan seats.

The challenge was finding one my tall and large sized husband fits in. The Mazda CX5 was like most others that size. It's almost comical watching him try it on, think sardine in a can.

He fit in the VW Tiguan the best of the ones we tried in that class, so that is what I got on Saturday. The two of us, with a bunch of luggage, drove it 750 miles yesterday on the interstate, and the computer registered 36MPG averaging 70MPH using cruise control (my similar sized Nissan Murrano used to get 19-21MPG Hwy). It was a nice smooth and quiet ride.

A nice surprise was the VW infotainment system using Android Auto to put my cell phone's Waze driving App up on the car's data screen. I no longer need to mount devices to the car for GPS duty.

Good luck in your search

Edit: It also has a third row of seats (7 passenger), so the grandkids should get a kick out of it.

My wife was wanting a small SUV earlier this year and we looked at a whole bunch of em' and the one she really loved was a Mazda CX-5 and she just raved about it as we were test driving it on the expressway. She was so happy and excited and stepped on the gas and got a blank expression on her face and said "why didn't somebody tell me this was a four cylinder?" and headed back to the dealership. She ended up getting a 2017 Infinity QX 50 that will go 155 mph and she is quite happy but it really drinks the premium fuel, especially the way she drives it!

The wife and I a couple months back got a lease on a 2018 Ford Focus, and I can't tell you how comfortable this car is to drive. We got the SE version which has less of the gadgets than some of the more expensive versions. The wife had a Focus she bought new in 2003 and had it for 9 years and practically drove the wheels off it.
This one was to replace my GMC truck which was starting to become a total money pit. I didn't think I would like getting a car again, but I love this car, it's like driving a recliner and it gets 35 mpg. The Ford dealer gave me more for my truck than I was actually going to sell it outright, between that and a first responder / leo discount I couldn't pass up the car and a lease was far cheaper than trying to make payments.

She better hold onto it because she won't like the engine in the new QX 50. It's now the same optional 4 cylinder that is in the new Altima, a variable compression turbo, though it still runs on premium fuel in the QX 50.

Cars are like guns. Value/price is strictly local. Pay what you think is right . . .

Whatever the brand, check the dealers website. We've bought Subarus through the dealers websites for thousands under what was quoted in the showroom. The salespersons hate it, but tough sledding.

When it comes time to do the paperwork, they will try to pile on the add ons: extended warranties, paint protection etc, etc. Given all the electronics on cars these days, factory extended warranties might pay off. Third party, no way.

Had a Honda Pilot, loved it and traded it for a Subaru Outback. The Outback is OK, mileage is getting better, a little underpowered for me. Subaru owners are very loyal. They had incentives of no interest and they were coming off of list, not much but a little. That was a year ago in July.

This summer we were looking at pickups, only GM. A dealership I worked at many years ago in western Kansas is now run by the son and he showed me his cost versus list price of a 1500 pickup and I couldn't believe how little margin there was. At that time there were incentives on GMC but not Chevy and he sold both. He was a bit frustrated by that.

Went to a more local GM dealer and they were running a deal where they would give me 25% off of the sticker price on any 1500 as I recall. It was pretty easy to figure, just take the sticker price times .75 and that is what you paid. The only draw back was it had to be financed through GM credit for a minimum of 3 months I believe it was. We wanted to pay cash but to get the deal you had to finance some of it.

The money is made on the used cars, not the new ones. There isn't much room on the new ones and the more popular the vehicle the fewer incentives. If you can get some factory incentives that is where you will save some money. Dealers simply do not have that much room in them.

Have you read the history of the Jeep? I like the looks of them but the mechanical record at one time was not very good. They were on a list, at one time, of vehicles not to buy because of dependability. That may have changed.

When we purchased our Outback we originally want to find a used one and that was difficult. People don't trade in the popular vehicles, they just drive them. So the price difference between a two year old Outback and new one was hardly a few hundred dollars and warranty.

One of the better times to buy a vehicle is, EOM - End of the Month. For a number of reasons, dealers want to sell as many vehicles as they can at the end of the month and will, likely, be willing to make a deal - especially on vehicles that've been sitting on the lot.

I just bought a new 2018 Ram quad cab and it had all the features I wanted and couple I didn't want. Blue tooth/Infotainment center $650, CD player $345 were two things I could have done without but the sticker price was $34K and the listed internet price was $23,600 plus doc fees so I said I would take it. They ask me if I wanted an extended warranty and I said "nope" and they wrote up the papers while I watched football in their waiting room. Everything went quick and fast but that's probably because it was Saturday night and everyone wanted to get the heck out of there.

Yeah, I found out that if I go in early to buy a car it will probably take most of the day. If I go in late afternoon it goes much more quickly because they all want to go home. Even the finance guy is in a hurry to get home, and he won't push as hard to sell you all the extras.
