A man was shot Monday when one of his own booby traps went off while he was trying to feed squirrels at his Cleveland County home, according to the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office.

I might be wrong, but I believe booby traps involving firearms are illegal?

Be that as it may, if you feel you must booby trap your home, try to remember to deactivate them when it's going to be you opening the door.

He had apparently rigged up one or more booby traps that involved guns...probably rigged to go off and shoot whoever opened an entrance door. I'm guessing he used a shotgun. He may have forgotten to deactivate it before opening the door, or maybe he thought he deactivated it, but his procedure was faulty.

Well, this guy didn't die, though he was severely wounded in the arm from the shotgun blast.

Thing is, instead of accepting blame or responsibility for his own stupidity (for lack of a better word), he blamed the squirrels!

Quoting from his own 911 call:

“This just sucks, (freaking) squirrels did me in.”

I guess you just never know what those pesky squirrels are gonna get up to next.

So here is a loosely related story with a less tragic ending.

Some 10 years ago, my elderly neighbor (aka: Captain Seaweed) was having a war with the local squirrel population who had taken a liking to his bird feeders. For the better part of a month, he tried all kinds of methods to protect his feeders, including buying new "squirrel proof" feeders. Nothing seemed to keep those tree rats from emptying their contents in short order. Often damaging the feeder in the process. Being an old, ornery and retired navy chief, he was not about to admit defeat. So what he did was to cut an extension cord and stripped 10" or so off each conductor. He then stapled each conductor to the top and bottom of the feeder so that when the squirrel hung on the feeder, "It was going to be toast!". So as ex chiefs will do, he popped a cold one and sat inside by the window to watch the fireworks one drizzly March morning. He didn't have to wait long.
As it turns out though, he didn't have to watch out the window to see the light show. It seems he didn't have GFI outlets outside where he had plugged in his (ACME Squirrel Cooker) device and (unfortunately,) also had his (brand new) Computer and a lamp on the same circuit on the inside of the wall. When the squirrel closed the circuit, the death bell tolled for Mr. Squirrel, Mr. Compaq and Mr. Westinghouse all in one bright flash :-)

I still cry laughing when I picture him reenacting the story (while proudly displaying the slain furry #@#$). The Chief died a few years back at the ripe age of 89. I miss the old curmudgeon and his antics.

No Darwin Award for squirrel guy, he lived. Only heard of one case where a survivor won. He did remove his genes from the gene pool. Drunk, at a party, waving a S&W.357 around. Stuffs it down the front of his pants. BOOM! Yep, Hairy and the twins gone. You can't fix stupid.

I heard one where a guy went out catching frogs and used a 22LR for a fuse in his truck. The electrical issue remained, producing heat in the cartridge, causing it to discharge. This event lead to the administration of a heavy metal supplement to his buddies Jim and the twins.
When contacted by officials, his wife inquired as to the well being of the frogs.
