Scared !!!!
I just about pooped my pants this afternoon.
This afternoon I was working in my detached garage sanding a hope chest I'm refinishing and making into a toy box for my grandson Gunner.
The bay door was down but the regular door was open.
Next to the bay door I have 2 large trash bins and 2 more for recyclables . I just happen to look up from sanding and standing there looking at me in the bay door window was a black bear. I started hollering for him to get out of here.
I was lucky that he took off and didn't come in the open door. He was only 6-8 ft. from me.
It might of been the same bear that last Sunday morning dumped the recycling barrels over and scattered every thing.
The garage is about 80 ft. from my house with woods on 3 sides .This is the 3rd time so far this year I've had a bear in my yard.
I guess it's time to put my 642 away and start packing my model 58.

I made a post about a guy I know that feeds the bears at his property in the 'Glades. They have no fear of him and started coming to the door. His wife wanted nothing of that so he put an electric fence around his place and out buildings. It seemed to work.
Be careful.

Glad it turned out well for you. Yep, you need to start packing a bigger gun and Febreze.

And contacting your conservation cops. Forthwith. They can probably trap and move, or other wise address the problem, PLUS, you need to make a record of the problem BEFORE you end up with an emergency that forces shooting the bear.

My ex mother-in-law did the same thing to me once when I was working in the garage enjoying a cold one. I started hollering for her to get out of here. I was unlucky in that she came right in the open door. She came within 6-8 ft. from me. It was a horrible experience.

I am from CT also. We are having more and more black bear encounters. My daughter came across one on a trail while hiking in Northern New Haven County; fortunately, the small bear just ran away. My neighbor had one in his yard last year, and a friend on the next street from me got pictures of a big bear going through his garbage cans last month.
Call CT DEEP. They may relocate this bear since it is coming close to humans. Did you notice tags in the bear's ears?

John I didn't see tags but it may be possible as the contact was over in 20 seconds. As soon as I started hollering he was gone. The first bear I saw was not bothered at all by me hollering at it and didn't run till my wife pulled into the driveway with her car.
There are several bears in the area from all the reports.

Yes closing the door would of helped but my garage has 3 separate bays with 2 rollup doors and 2 regular doors and I was going back and forth for tools.

Ever sense I saw the first bear I go to the transfer station 2-3 times a week with the garbage so there is very little to tempt the bears . But it is tough as it is a 3 family house luckily no small kids all adults.
The recyclables are only picked up every 2 weeks Think bottles , cans , news paper and cardboard.

In bear country you need to rinse out all food containers before, discarding.
Any food scent, can bring them in for a look, see.
Had to replace a window at a summer cabin, that had just half a
bag of potatoes on the sink, for next weeks visit, for a family.
Forest Service put in a large bear prof, metal container, for the cabins to use.

We have a bear problem here in the Carson Valley. I'm told that the bears like robbing fruit trees. The bears stay mostly on the West side. Hwy 395 runs the length of the Valley and seems to discourage the bears from crossing it.
I live on the East side. I'm also planting a small orchard; 25 more trees this Spring. I hope I never get up in the morning, look out the window, and see bears rampaging through my trees. I always wanted a bear skin rug to go in front of my fireplace.

I do rinse out all jars , bottles and cans but the tenants throw out pizza boxes and other food packages.

I've walked into my garage & been startled by stray cats & a couple times by a skunk.
Thankfully the skunk seemed a friendly fellow, just enjoying the cat's kibble.
Didn't poop my pants but a jumped pretty good!

I live in the Sierra Foothills. There are more Black bears here than deer, it seems. We take our garbage to the dump to keep the bears away. Black bears have lost their fear of man. Now I carry when walking around the place. Lions also.

There's a stupid woman in Western Colorado Springs who leaves her kitchen slider open so the Bears can come and go as they please. She feeds them in her kitchen. They'll kill her someday

WOW! I guess I don't feel so bad about the occasional possum or racoon after reading that. Glad he ran off and didn't charge you.

Iberia and St. Mary parishes in Louisiana have a resurging black bear population that is highly watched. A ton of them have collars and there is talk about removing them from endangered to protected. Problem is they are huge pests. They love sugar cane and can decimate a field. About every 3-4 years somebody mistakes one for a pig (the usual defense) and shoots it-Then they can't keep their mouth shut, get turned in and wind up paying the $10,000 fine. Point of this story is that I have a bunch of friends that live on Avery Island and I routinely get pictures of bears sitting in driveways, walking down the road etc. I have a picture of one sitting in the pick up truck bed of my hunting pal's truck just chillin'!They have to keep garbage locked up and keep a weather eye out. It's pretty neat really having them back in the ecosystem.

Sis sent me a pic a few years ago of a cub munching her bird feeder. She took it from 12’ away while propping the storm door open and trying to keep the cat from running out.
It was kind of blurry

Lions...........
That reminds me,
a week ago a mountain lion was spotted in the Ferris and Plumb street
area of S/W Reno, of all places.......... around noon !!
Now that would be interesting to see in the front yard or while walking the dog!!
We get bears but first time that I can recall a lion visit.
A good size bear or lion at close range, might make me want to change my shorts!!
