On closer examination, it’s not a Model 1. They do shoot 22 short black powder. My error. Nice gun (and pocket watch) none the less

I love watches. Consequently, I have a bunch. These are my two favorites:

I swap back and forth between them. Unfortunately, the Luminox has had a problem, it will drop about 5 minutes every now and then. I've taken it in to a repair guy and he couldn't find anything wrong. If it does it again, it will go in the drawer with the rest of the "also ran" watches.

Years ago I was standing in a line at the hardware store. The guy in front of me commented on my watch and how he loved his too. Apparently he had mistaken my Benrus for a Rolex. When I told him that mine wasn't a Rolex, he suddenly didn't want to talk to me anymore. I love watches, but snobs bother me.

Here's my 'Get 'er Done' watch/knife combo.

A Casio analog Quartz with easy to read high contrast dial with big numbers, and no day/date function to mess with during short months or leap years. It's accurate enough to only need resetting when time zones or daylight savings time changes. The going Walmart price is $15 - $16 dollars. If a battery dies, a band breaks, or a mugger steals it... no sweat, I'll buy another one.

Most EDC knives I carry cost a lot more than my EDC Casio, but for this thread I wanted to picture a comparably priced knife of quality.

Pictured is a Buck Rival (2.75" blade) Model 364. I believe the street price on this Rival model is also $15 - $16. Buck sent it to me as a free warranty replacement for another inexpensive plastic handled Bucklite I carried for years, when I wore a Seiko Pro Diver watch. It is an excellent US manufactured knife and I would opt for it over a sub-$20 Chinese knife any day.

The combo is not all that expensive or impressive, but they work very well.

My everyday watch is one my wife bought me a few years ago, a Bulova automatic. Nothing too fancy, she bought it to replace a Swiss Army my dad gave me that was stolen from her vehicle when she borrowed it and then forgot to lock the door.

She chose this one because she says I like to see the insides of everything I buy, this way I wouldn't tear it open to see how it works. She's not wrong...

And the shooter is a hacked down 4.5" 29-2.

And I bought this Tag Monaco last month on an impulse. Been wanting this watch for a long time, finally dropped the hammer on it.

I don't have nearly as many watches as guns, but it is a parallel interest. There are several that I want, some expensive, some not. One being a Submariner in stainless. Some day.

Retired from policing in 2000 and haven't worn a watch since. And won't.

I've been looking for a Plain-Jane Submariner lately. Black dial, like Steve McQueen wore. Wow. I don't think I can afford one EVER. Might have to settle for a $80 Invicta Pro Diver and just squint when I look at it so I don't see the logo.

I want one for myself, but more importantly I wanted to buy one as a gift for an old friend of mine from high school. I broke his watch in Gr 11, need to make amends.

My Mom & Dad gave me a nice Wittnauer watch for my 18th birthday.
(That was 66 years ago). I never got used to wearing it, but I still
have it.

I had a Rolex, but couldn't get used to wearing it either, so I gave
it to my grandson.

5 or 6 years ago I was teaching the enhanced concealed weapons
license class. It was all day, so I needed to kinda keep on schedule.
Went to Walmart and bought the watch shown below. Wore it for
classes only. When not worn, it is on my table next to my Lazy Boy.
I can't find a name on it anywhere, but it is an El-Cheapo. Only
about ten bucks if I recall correctly.

I've needed to replace the battery a couple of times, but it keeps
perfect time.

BTW the gun is model 10 with 2" barrel, wearing Grashorn grips.
The holster is Ken Null's RSS (Revolver Super Speed). The knife
is a Puma Prince.

As a teenager I used a Waltham wrist watch. In Vietnam I picked up a nice Seiko chronograph (just like half-a-million other GI's). Later bought a Bulova Accutron (very accurate watch). Finally a Rolex Submariner (basic, no date, stainless).

When I retired, after more than 50 years tied to a watch and a schedule, I put my watch away. I'll get there when I get there.

This is where I am. I really like the look of the Rolex Submariner or the Omega Seamaster, but they're stupid expensive. I'm having a hard time justifying dropping $3K on a watch let alone $8K.

I'll have to be happy with my simple time pieces that just keep good time.

I should have been more careful with my choice of words, shouldn't have said "Plain Jane Submariner." Its a classic, and its probably one of the most copied designs out there. You look at just about any dive watch and you can see some elements copied from the Sub. That being said, there may have been an earlier one of the same design before they were made, I'm not an expert on this.

My wife bought me this one the other day, mostly just to get me to stop yapping I think.

Its clearly a blatant ripoff, but I believe the Invicta people prefer the term homage. The bezel has a bit of wiggle to it, and the bracelet has a light tinny feel to it. But I guess that's one of the reasons this only costs around 100 bucks.

No disrespect to those who own the real thing, I would never try to claim its equal to a Rolex. Just thought I'd post it.

My Casio F91W and Douk-Douk knife:

Not the fanciest on this thread by any means, but both are proven and dependable, not to mention affordable. Works for me!

Well, I think the "Rolex sub look" is not a Rolex first. In 1953 the Blancpain 50 fathoms had about the same look. The rotating bezel wasn't even a new concept by then. In the 1930s they were already used, but at the time not with diving in mind, they were mostly intended for aviation and auto racing(Longines come to mind for having made aviation watches with rotating bezels ). Diving only became a thing right after WWII with the popularization of the aqua-lung (self contained underwater breathing apparatus, SCUBA for short) invented during the war.

Example of a 1953 Blancpain (taken from the net because I don't have one).

Default Being retired....

...carrying a cellphone and having clocks on walls, nightstand and cars, I never wear a watch any more. But if I did it would be my pocket watch.

I'd also like to have one really fine watch for love of mechanical things. I wouldn't care what size it was. I saw one that really appealed to me that was handful. A watch and a gun make me feel connected with the universe.

With my job (construction) digging for a cell phone when in harnesses or other gear, or when operating equipment, or covered in dust or materials of all types, is very impractical. The wristwatch is immediately at hand and doesn't subject ones expensive cellphone to grime or possible damage from fumbling it. It really is indispensable.

So the concept and style wasn't a first with the Sub, but from looking at modern watches would it be fair to say the Sub is the most copied? I would think its at least one of the more recognized watches out there. My dad gave me a Swiss Army Lancer years ago, it looked like the designers had the Rolex in mind for inspiration.

It was stolen from my wife's vehicle, I'd like to find a replacement. In the meantime, I'm going to wear this Faux-lex and see how it stands up. In the three days I've had it its kept running, but I think its lost about a minute in that time. I just corrected it to the time on my phone, we'll see if I can get a more accurate reading on it over the next few days.

You betcha.

Also the most counterfeited I think. From laughable forgeries to some it takes good knowledge not to be duped.

I forgot about this one, my inlaws bought me this watch and book on a trip to China a few years ago. I've never worn it, or read the book. Dusted it off a few minutes ago and played with the crown and it started working. The best feature is his arm, it waves back and forth in time with the second hand.

If you look closely at the second picture, you can see the fine work put into even the smallest pieces.

I used to really like watches in the 90's and with technology fell into the cell phone watch arena. About a year ago, I was getting nostalgic and wanted a nice watch but didn't want to spend over $ 1K.... I ended up going with a Tag Heuer Formula 1 with a cloth band. See picture for details. I like it. It's fun, not too serious, but a really nice time piece.

Mexican Kerry:

Your Invicta should hold up just fine. Invicta actually make several versions of this model. Both my sons have a version with a Japanese movement. I bought them for them about ten years ago. My oldest sons daughter dropped his on a tile floor, and broke the crystal. I just bought him a replacement. But both watches held up under daily wear off and on for years.

But about 11 years ago, the boys bought me a version with a Swiss movement. I have worn it on and off for much of these years. I have a bunch of watches, so I do rotate, and wear the one I pictured above a lot. But I have worn the Invicta swimming in both the Gulf and the Atlantic, in swimming pools and hot tubs, in the shower, and so forth. I have never gone deep with it, but it is certainly waterproof for most everyday water exposure. The Swiss version also has an improved clasp and bracelet.

Here are a few pics that I took today. Remember this thing has been worn for years. Over the last week I checked the accuracy, and it gains exactly 12 seconds per day, so in 5 days, it gains one minute. Not bad for an 11 year old mechanical automatic watch which was never babied!:

Here's the back. It has a 26 jewel Swiss movement:

Here's a view of the bracelet. These are solid stainless steel links, and the whole package is built like a tank.

This is a very well made watch, which has stood the test of time, but it does retail for about $350.00. Still, a pretty good bargain. I think it's listed as Invicta's model 9937.

Best Regards, Les

I don’t usually wear a watch.
Being a recovering Type A, I need to continually check the time and ensure we’re on schedule even if we don’t have a schedule!
If I really need to check the time, I’ll look at my iPhone.
But if I wear a watch, it’s usually this one.

Mine has the Seiko guts, and is the 8926OB model (coin edge). Lots of different models with this watch, mine is pretty basic.

Here's another watch I wore recently...a mechanical Russian watch one of my sons bought me for Christmas a few years ago. Has to be manually wound every day or so.

When I was visiting Russia I used to bring Russian watches home with me as gifts. I still have a few. Anyway, that was one of the things that started my sons and my interest in mechanical and automatic mechanical watches.

I'll try to get some more shots of some of my other watches,

Best Regards, Lea

I am not imune to the "Rolex sub look" even though I have no Rolex (I do have a fake that I inherited from one of my late uncles, who knew very well it was a fake). And since I like Longines. Here are two of mine, a Spirit that I bought in 2000 (I think) and an Aqua Conquest from 2010.

Watches...your favorite go to and why, pic with gun or knife up to you.-20180917_074215-jpg

I don't wear them much these days. The Spirit, to preserve the original strap, and the Aqua Conquest because I don't dive anymore and the screw in crown is bothersome when you dont wear an automatic watch on a regular basis.

Welcome to the "Seiko Hour!" Well there is one exception, the watch in the upper left is a Bolivia Astronaut that I bought from Goldsmith's in Memphis the first year my wife and I were married.

The lower left is the Seiko quartz that my wife presented to me when I graduated from law school. The lower right is my EDW, a Seiko automatic diver's watch. The upper right is a Seiko quartz that I inherited from my F-I-L. He loved "bling" and was a great guy!

The other stuff is just some props that I had laying around.

^^^ Nothing wrong with a Fossil. When I was in high school they were very popular. Them and Doc Martin shoes and Tommy Hilfiger clothes. LOL. I tell ya what, I bet in years to come they become a collectible. People/kids who couldn't afford them in 10-20 years will start feeling nostalgic and buy them. I almost guarantee it, although I have no crystal ball.

Doc Martin shoes are apparently making a comeback with the kids, I needed to get out of the house today so my daughter and I went to the mall. She told me she'd really like a pair, and sure enough they were in the front window of every hip young store. I told her if she had size 12 feet she could have mine, my mom never throws anything away and they are probably still in the closet back home.

But, watches. I went into a jewelry store under the pretense of needing to replace the wedding band I lost years ago. My wife has mentioned it here and there, I think its more about me walking around "without a collar on", like a dog that's slipped the leash and dug out of the yard.

Anyway, I thought it might be time to try making her happy in this department, so off I went. I'm wearing a grubby leather jacket, ratty jeans and worn out slipper/shoes. Top it off with a beard I haven't touched since mid-January and my chapeau is a coyote-brown beanie I wear at work with a 1911 logo stitched into it. A dream customer for a jewelry store, huh?

The three salespeople look kinda funny at me when we come in, and one grudgingly peels herself away from their conversation when I lean over a display case to look at something (probably worried I was going to drop cockroaches or lice on the counter).

She cautiously asks me if there is something I would like to look at. I explain my situation, and mention I would also like to look at one of the Citizen watches they have. She pulls it out but doesn't actually hand it to me. I figure ok here goes. I pull my watch off and set it on the counter and say "Can I try it on?"

I wasn't getting much service at this point, so I played my trump card, my new Tag Monaco facing her. The attitude changed then and there. She handed me the watch and her two associates almost jumped over the counter to fawn over my daughter (who is admittedly one of the most gorgeous young ladies this side of a Guess ad).

It was kind of silly really, I had no idea that my appearance would cause such a problem trying to buy a relatively cheap watch.

I played with it a bit, then handed it back and put mine back on. I told her I liked it but needed to see what else was available, it was like watching a tire slowly deflate.

We cruised around the mall for a bit, my daughter made a few funky purchases courtesy of my bank card, and I compared prices at three other stores that had the same watch.

I ended up back at the first, and picked out a simple gold band for my finger to keep the wife happy, and told them I'd take the Citizen if they had a bit of wiggle room. Sticker price was 495, walked out at 270, along with a little gold necklace to put under the wife's pillow. Fair is fair, if I'm bringing home a new bauble for myself, I figure I can give her something too.

Sorry for the novel, here's the watch. Citizen Eco-Drive Promaster Diver's 200m. Been curious about them for a while, just wanted to drop the hammer and try one. (No I haven't set the date yet). Yes its another clone-ish Sub type diver.

Is that knife from Benchmade? What's the handle material? And were you at that really big mall in Calgary? I saw a video of a couple of my favorite models opening a VS store there. Probably shouldn't post that video here, though...But I was interested that one girl is Dutch and the other South African, and the mall is in Canada. Small world today!

T-S...Yes, that is a Benchmade. (You can see the butterfly logo in the photo). The Volli has G10 scales, and they are "textured", presumably to give them more "gripability" when wet and under adverse conditions. I have quite a few Benchmades, but not this one. I have seen and handled one at a dealers, however.

Best Regards, Les

I just bought this cheap Samsung watch a week ago. I used to have a nice flip watch.

I haven't wore a wrist watch in over 40 years. No need to.

That's the watch I wear. I beat up a number of watches while I was a LEO. I was one of those guys that bought the $1 from Wal-Mart for a number of years. I like having the light, the day and the date.

My GOOD watch is a 1939 gold Hamilton pocket watch that my granddaddy got that year. He was a used car salesman for Fox Chevrolet in Baltimore and in '39, every salesman that sold 100 cars in a year became a member of the 100 Car Club. Instead of giving out bonuses (the US was still in the Depression), the members received the Hamiltons, with their names engraved on them.

The Volli is the best basic Benchmade I've handled. Its extremely grippable, and it has an assisted opener. It's super-fast. The S30V blade is very hard wearing, I've had two of this exact same knife. The only reason I've replaced it is that I left my first one on a shelf in the tile aisle at Home Depot (lucky them). I need to buy another one to keep in storage for the fact that I know I will eventually lose this one but they will be discontinued with my luck.

To keep with the theme of this thread, here is a pic of my poor man's Rolex Sub clone sxs with my new Citizen ProMaster. There is no comparison, the Citizen wins hands down. Appearance-wise, and in the basic function of the mechanics.

The Invicta is loose and sloppy, the Eco Drive is tight and precise.

I'd add that when I went out today I was actually looking for a reasonable facsimile of a Pepsi bezel GMT Master. Didn't quite hit the mark, but this seems to be a nice watch nonetheless. There's always tomorrow, the hunt continues....

Here's a couple of pictures of my Grand Daddy's old 20 Year Waltham. Serial number 22397356 dates it to 1919. He carried this watch for many years and it was a prized possession. You can't see them in the picture, but inside the back cover are scratched various dates which I assume were when it was serviced. Most are so small you need a magnifying glass or jewelers loop to read them. They include 9/19/22, 8/13/31,8-23-37 and 4/90 which was when I had a local jeweler look at it.

Unfortunately, it won't stay running. Back in 1990 when I had it looked at, the jeweler told me that some shaft was bent and couldn't be repaired.
A couple of years ago I meet a man whose hobby is old clocks and watches. He got it working, but it just won't stay that way. It'll keep excellent time for a few hours, maybe even a couple of days. But then it just stops. YES, I do keep it wound up.
These days it resides in one of those little display domes on my mantle as a reminder of Grandaddy.

If anybody could provide any information or current value on it, I'd be most appreciative.

Default Old Pocket Watches

Grayfox,
Check out pocketwatchdatabase . com

Found this wonderful Website awhile ago.

I have a 1927 Elgin (Model 3, size 12s). Just by
chance I thought I would try to find it on this
database.....Found it and more!

I found my 1927 Elgin at the Farm in a drawer.
I wound it up, but it would not stay running for
long.

I got it repaired about 10 years ago. I was
fortunate it was just a broke in half Main Spring.
I have kept it wound ever since. Keeps excellent
time too!

Hopefully the Website helps you in your Endeavors.

I have seen and handled one at a dealers, however.

Les-

Thanks. I thought I saw a Benchmade logo, but only part is visible, and it could have been something else.

The handle scales look more like grooved horn than G-10. My Model 710 has G-10, but they're flat and checkered. They are pretty non-slip.

Yes, the Volli has G10 scales. I find it to be a good size for pocket carry, and a useful blade length (just under 4.5" closed with a 3.25" blade). The scales are very comfortable and do provide good grip. The clip is unobtrusive and the knife controls are ambidextrous. I'd recommend this knife to anyone, its been fantastic for me.

And no, I unfortunately missed the VS opening at the mall near Calgary haha. This trip was just to our local downtown area. Although the Guess store my daughter took me into had some big pictures of their current spring models and WOW. Va va voom. Made me want to book a trip to Spain!
