Default S&W 357 Digital Art - 3D Render

Greetings everyone. I'm new to the site. I'm a graphic artist that is in the process of learning engraving. But today I wanted to share some digital art - 3D modeling that I did on the computer of my 357 model 19-3. The actual gun is nickel plated, however. I took some artist liberties. It's a work in progress. Let me know what you think.

Gives new meaning to the term, "Draw your gun!"

Seriously, nice work. Welcome to the Forum.

Pretty cool. You are obviously very good with the rendering software.
Can you "buff" the finish up a bit - make it a little less matte?

Yes, I can give it a shine. When I do that, I'll have to apply a surrounding environment to be reflected off the surface of the gun to make it look more realistic. That's partly why I chose the matte finish for now. It's definitely a work in progress. And thanks for the compliment!

Hopefully you aren’t doing this in a public school, cause you’re gonna get expelled!

Seriously, though... nice work

Texas Star, You couldn't be more right. Why did I spend hours and hours modeling it on my computer when I could've just snapped a picture of it with my iPhone? Why didn't I think of that! That's 20 hours I'll never get back. Bummer. Thanks for all your kind words and compliments.

Old TexMex, Thanks for the compliment. Fortunately, I did it in my office so I wouldnl't get expelled, haha. It's been many moons since I've attended a public school, many moons indeed. But, I am getting a one on one education in engraving by a master engraver. I'm extremely excited about that. I can't wait till I engrave my first gun.

Don’t forget the red insert on the ramp.

Referring back to OPs' post #8, I did 3D modeling back about 15 years ago. Light sources are needed, some spot and some flood, and then start playing with light source angles. Even though the surface is matte,a properly placed spot light could do well.
What I was using back then was Micrographix 3D on a Windows 98 system, extremely long render times compared to the fast speed of modern systems.

The actual 357 I used for modeling doesn't have the red insert on the ramp. My 38 snub does though.

I know little of this but my 16 year old granddaughter is excelling in art in High School. She has been taking a computer imaging class so I showed her your images.

Her words: "freakin' awesome."

Thanks Rustyt1953. That's quite a compliment! I reduced the size of the images to the max size instructed by the forum image uploader, but it automatically reduced them even smaller. It was disappointing. I plan to upload more as I'm working on it, but I hope I can figure out a way to upload larger images so the detail can be seen. I've seen other larger images used in this forum, but not sure why mine were reduced. Maybe theirs were just linked from an outside URL? I hope to figure it out. Anyhow, thanks for the comment! And tell your girl thanks as well.

Enlarged it really looks like a bead blasted M66 2-1/2" snub. Except for having no red front sight insert.

What you saw was a work in progress. I didn't make the surface polished because I didn't yet have an environment for it to make the reflections look realistic. But now I do. I'm going to post another image shortly. Also, I mentioned it earlier in the thread, but my 357 does not have the red insert on the ramp. Hope your weekend is going well!

Default Updated Render - Nickel Plated

I'm new at posting images using URLs onto forums, but I'm gonna give it a try. If it works, you should see the latest render of my 357 snub.

Thanks for the image hosting advice, Rustyt1953! Being an artist, I don't like low-res images of my work being shown.

Default "Clay" Render

Here is the "clay" version render of the 3D model. I find it interesting to see them with absolutely no color involved. It makes for an unusual perspective. But I had not yet done the etchings on the barrel and frame.

Thanks! I had to set up an environment image before I made the chrome/nickel plating surface as reflective, or else it wouldn't have been as realistic. It had to have things to actually be reflected. I also practiced a little with virtual camera aperture and focal points to give that last one a sense of depth.

Default Latest Renders - Hollow Points Added

OK. Not trying to beat a dead horse, but I get pretty thorough. Had to replace the ammo with something better. The previous didn't quite look right to me. Added some hollow points to the image. I think the loads look more realistic also, given the texture and color I added. I think it's starting to come full circle now.
