We had an old Buick w/a factory CB but kept it turn off most of the time. I didn’t want my young daughters hearing some of the chatter back then.

Last CB I had was a Johnson 223 and that was in the early 70's. There were so many filthy mouthed people on and everybody trying to run all over everyone else and that is when I finally decided enough is enough and got my Ham ticket. Have been off for about 17 years and am begenning to get back on on 2 meters and 440 and 6 meters. Forgot how much I enjoyed it.

Many years ago I had a couple of Johnson black faces, now I have a 5 watt walkie talkie that I use when I go hunting or fishing in northern NH, you have to be careful when you are on the logging roads, I also have a hand held marine radio.

You may want to consider an inexpensive Baofeng UV-5R series (or better) walkie-talkie that can be had via Amazon, eBay or Bang-Good. They are programmable, either manually or with free CHIRP software and the proper cable. Excellent range, lots of available accessories, antennas, etc. Technically these are Ham Radio Transceivers, but you can start off by programming them to work only on FRS unlicensed channels and then add in the other frequencies if you decide to pursue a license later.

The wife and I each have one of these in red as part of our emergency kits along with extra battery packs and a variety of antennas. Total cost for each setup with accessories was about $100 give or take, and they work well for communications around our acreage as well.

Default Yup

Got a portable in the truck, throw it between the truck and the jeep when away, gives the snowflake boobs something to ask about when on the road, screw them and their cel phone addictions.

Looking at a 3rd option: BTECH MURS V-1. Seems people overlook this option, uses VHF frequencies, 5 channels, 2 watts power (compared to 1/2 watt for FRS channels and no FCC license required. About $100 each and are programmable. Still doing research, but this looks like a good option.

The only CB Radio that I have was one converted to the 10 Meter Ham Band. Prior to the inception of the Citizen Band Radio band, the frequency spectrum was the 11 Meter Ham Band.

Back in the 60's, the guy next door was a truck driver.
His son and I were around 10 and would get on his CB that was a higher wattage than what was legal.
We had great fun messing around on it for a few weeks until the FCC tracked us down.
We sure got in a lot of trouble, including his dad.

BillBond, my dad had a souped up CB as did all of his buddies in the local CB club. When the FCC guy came into town he always set up shop at the bus station. He didn't know the owner of the bus station was a member of the club and he warned everyone as soon as he hit town. There were some quiet days and nights until the coast was clear. I still have one I put in my pick up when I'm going back and forth to NC to listen to the trucker channels. Great entertainment when you're travelling alone.

Yeah, "back in the day" the FCC would go after people for having an illegal linear amp for your CB.

Do they even do much enforcement stuff like that anymore? Do they still go after people on the HAM bands without a license?

I haven't even heard of any of those kinds of enforcement activities in years - but I'm not into the hobby either.

Still have a CB and a 2 meter rig in my PU for use when upcountry in the maine woods to avoid the logging trucks. I Understand that many of the truckers have gone to marine radios as they are more powerful. The CB craze was such a mess and the skip was horrendous. I have a ham license but will not renew it as I will be long past 90 by then. Cb sure created some funny stories in hunting camp back in the day.

The FCC will go after illegal use, but usually only if the person is acting up. If you act like you are licensed, the FAA or any of the designated band monitors will most likely not lift a finger.

Hand held walkie talkies are line of sight. Basically useless unless the person you are communicating with is right over yonder.

A CB isn't much better. You have to be really close.

Same for all the other types.

If you are worried about the need to communicate in an emergency, a cellphone is your only option.

We have a mountain cabin out in the boondocks. Only 1 cell tower in view and we have to walk outside to access it. Only 1 carrier that uses the tower. We switched to that carrier, even though they are the highest priced in the state.

In our area one single cell company covers 99.9 % of the state. The others are hit and miss. Find out who that carrier is in your neighborhood and buy their service. Any other option might be OK once in a while, but it won't be guaranteed.

Hand one in the cruiser for awhile. It kept me awake talking to truckers and other folks who didn't sleep at night. I would get "Smokey Bear" requests and answer as "County Mountie." I got a lot of emergency calls like that. Used them for hunting also. We also used the walkie talkies a lot at the big gun shows. Cell phones diminished their usefulness. I had a booster and did some skip talking from all over the country. Heard a lot of Spanish on there too.

FYI, you cannot legally use the Baofeng on FRS (or GMRS). While they are FCC Part 90 certified for "private land mobile", and can legally be used for Amateur Radio (Part 97), they cannot be used for Part 95. Just on its face, Part 95 requires that FRS radios have fixed antennas, and that they be FCC certified for FRS use no exceptions. https://nsea.com/part95/95.194.txt

I put my old Cobra 29 back in my hunting truck last year after joining a rabbit club. In the field we use those pocket size CB walkie talkies. Blood Hound....over and out.

$60 on Amazon. I have one, I will be buying more. It ain't a Motorola but it does the job. Battery has a decent life though I suggest you buy a second to keep on the charger to swap as needed.

Oh, yes I have an amateur license. I also have a Uniden 980SSB in the truck. I have family and friends who will not go through the license process for what ever reason. We are able to keep in touch on the road by CB to coordinate fuel stop and breaks.

The only easy around the mine yard is with a CB radio. All communication is on one channel. Outside of that, it is only a good way to converse with interstate truckers.

Yes, really!!

Our base camp is in a valley. Some of us walk up one side of the mountain and others walk up the other side. We can also easily get 3/4 mile communication in the woods with our toy walkie talkies. But as soon as one of us goes over the top of the mountain and down the other side, it's all over. That's what line-of-sight means.

If you literally have dead spots and NO service, then you're outta luck. In that case, stick with your walkies but stay within flat land.

Years ago when we were too cheap to buy a VHF many of us boaters used CB. I believe the horizon is 8 miles. The CB worked out that far if we had enough watts, but once you got over the earth's round it was done.
