Unbelievable.. .Please Stay Home People
Just found out my eldest daughter and her husband attended a distant cousin's birthday party in NYC on March 15.
The oldest cousin attending the party is now diagnosed with the dang Covid19 and given no more than three days to live.
Now my daughter and SIL are home quarentined, but they live with two of my grandkids, one of whom is diabetic.
All for what, a stupid party. Arrrgh!

I am terribly sorry to hear this and I can't imagine how painful this must be for you and all your family.
What gets me is how flippant and insensitive a handful of folks on this forum are about it.
I worry as I am in the "extreme risk" category and probably wouldn't survive a bout with this.
We are taking every precaution we can.
My most heartfelt prayers for all affected by this.

Sorry to hear that BWZ, truly.
I take this plague serious as could be.
I’m getting tired of reading the poop being spewed out there like this is a knee scrape.

Denial is a powerful thing. It makes us choose risky behavior over safety by convincing us that we won't get the virus. I got a call from then gun store that a Smith Model 57 8 3/8" just came in. They asked me if I wanted to look at it. I'm not dying over a firearm. God Bless you and may God be with those that are sick.

bigwheelzip, I am truly sorry to hear this news. I will also pray for your cousin and the family too. Maybe some of the more insensitive on this forum will change their tune after they see people they interact with affected by this disease.
Just today, I was talking with my propane guy after he came and filled my tank and he's very worried about this because his wife is on some kind of med for RA that suppresses her immune system, so he is trying to minimize his chances of bringing it home and she is staying home for the immediate future also.

A sincere thank you for all your kindness and Prayers.
I'm still finding out details. My daughter, as is typical of her, had driven this sick senior cousin back and forth to the party.
The party was the usual Brooklyn Italian birthday, with 60 family attending.
Contact tracing has begun and so far is not turning up anyone with symptoms.
The sick cousin is a veteran from the 101st Airborne, and being treated at the VA. A very experimental drug treatment has been offered and agreed to. The doctor has warned that even if the treatment is sucessful, it will still leave him a desperately sick man.

Rusty, I worry about you in this awful mess also, but I know you'll do all you can to avoid this. An awful part of us being super high risk is not being able to charge up there and offer help.

I'm very sorry to hear of this. Many people aren't taking this serious. My wife and I have been holed up for a while now.
We're in the "healthy" and low risk category but still don't want to risk either getting sick on unwittingly spreading this virus to others.

BTW, thank you for sharing this--it drives home the point that you can't be too careful nowadays and you had best put some thought into your actions.

Bigwheelzip, I am rooting for you and your family. So far, I don’t know anyone personally who shas contracted COVID, but that will almost certainly change.
You give some good advice. Fortunately for me, I am staying with my son to recuperate from a knee replacement surgery, and he is taking this stuff even more seriously than I am. I am 72, a Type II diabetic, and am feeling pretty whacked out from the surgery, so I guess that puts me in the high risk category. My boy won’t even let me go to the store to take advantage of senior hours, so I guess I will just write down my additions to the grocery list and let it go.

I can not stay home as my part time job is considered essential. At 76 years old, I'll be working at my job as required.
Yes, I am taking this seriously and I hope your family recovers so we can all get back to business as usual.

BWZ, I am so sorry to hear this. My prayers for your family, and hope that they have not contracted this serious disease. Also prayers for the cousin. I agree with you and the others that many folks are still not taking this threat seriously enough.
Best Regards, Les

Sorry to hear this.
People need to take this seriously. It isn't just the flu.
Yes the flu kills thousands every year, So, what because thousands are dying of one thing we should just go on about our business and let thousands more die of something worse when we could do something?
I am a little slow explain, it to me using small words.

My prayers go out to the OP’s family as well as all others hit by this. I feel that as more states have closure orders and the #’s continue to climb; this is starting to really sink in across the board that this is a legitimate threat that we all need to think about.
And even when it does settle down, we all are going to need a good hug as the mental aspects of this all will linger on for some time. My family remains healthy, but the stress and anxiety are really hitting hard. I am sure we are among many having the same issues and concerns.
You all be safe!

This is the flu(one of the possible flu strains) and one of the deadliest.
Just like the 1918/19 "Spanish flu"(which had nothing to do with Spain except for the fact that, as a "neutral power" in WWI, their press was not under censorship and they were the ones that spread the news about the disease) it is estimated that a quarter of the World population was erased by what is called "influenza". Both parents of my maternal grandmother died from it in 1919.
Be safe. It's far better than being sorrow.

I did not say it was the same virus.
Edit. But it has similarities. Symptoms, propagation rate and probably death rate.

Very sorry to hear about your situation. Just asked the lord to watch over your family. I have been off work with shoulder surgery, so plenty of time to browse through all the information outlets regarding this virus. I would have to conclude no-one knows or maybe better stated wants to truely say how this plays out. Seen stores where there are 20 million Chinese cell phone uses that are not back ti using those phones, 657,000 landline users in China that are not back online. Suggesting virus deaths much higher then disclosed by china. Also here stories where it's nothing more then the flu. One thing for sure we will never know the truth. If we did advert major pandemic, or we were dupted into over hyped claims.

Extremely sorry to hear of this.
Staging a birthday party on the 15th, in New York... well, they say the virus seems like it is a joke until it threatens someone you know.
Seems the party is over, in more ways than one. Hope someone learned a lesson. Prayers sent for your cousin! KNEE MAIL HEALS!

Given what has happened in Italy, can I assume that those with an Italian background find it culturally unacceptable to postpone family gatherings?
Please bear in mine I am an English only child who probably began social distancing in his teens while still living with a parent.

I don't know why people make that decision. My eldest daughter that was exposed to the virus, invited me to her home for dinner after my recent surgery, and I declined because of the virus. She knows how seriously I take it. Her husband is NYPD, and should be aware of the seriousness as well.
Can't say I've seen any ethnic propensity to flout this danger, but denial seems a popular pastime for many people.

Not quite, but I did spend two years in a boys only grammar school from age 11 to 13. If you remember how they could be...

Your family has my prayers, I hope that all comes out well for them from what many are still calling an over blown hoax. Peace be with you.

Contact them and get their loved ones on hydroxychloroquine ASAP. New York got the doses from the feds on Monday.

My daughter, SIL and their two children that still live with them are still self quarentined without symptoms.
The sick cousin that was the passenger in their car to the party, is still at the VA hospital on a ventilator. The experimental drug seems to be having a positive effect, but it's to soon to tell much. They say that the slight improvment is better than expected.
CAT scans show substantial damage to the lungs that is permanent and perhaps damage to other organs.
My brother has also now been confirmed positive, is unconscious and and on a ventilator at St. Luke's in Manhattan. Not much else is known about his condition. His wife is still self quarentined.
The other family at the cousin's birthday party have not reported symptoms yet that I know of.
Thank you for your concern, and I hope you and all the forum can get through this mess unscathed.

Thank you. We appreciate that.
I just found out that the wonderful wife of one of my NJ cousins, is sick and was tested positive, but so far is able to fight the virus from home.
These three family had no direct contact recently, and live on Long Island, NYC, and New Jersey.

Sorry to hear of this BWZ. I’ll pray that all of your family survives this. It’s a shame how a happy celebration can bring so much grief.
