Default GOOD MOVIES TO WATCH WHILE STAYING HOME

During the last week, we watched three great recommended movies we'd never seen. Maybe you've also got suggestions for relatively unknown movies.

" A Big Hand for a Little Lady"

"Enemy at the Gates"

"Never Cry Wolf"

"Little Shop of Horrors"

Give the "Jesse Stone" series a try.

I've gotten my "Columbo" Dvd's out as well.

I may break out my "JAG" dvd's as well.

The Chernobyl miniseries (five episodes).

Children of Men (End-of-the-world sort of thingy)

Forgotten Soldier (subtitles, or if you're fluent in Finnish, no worries)

Danger Close (Aussies in Vietnam)

Six Underground, The Wolf's Call, and if you haven't seen The Wire, it's well worth your time.

Lotta good TV series, too. I like the genre “nordic noir.” On Netflix, the series “The Valhalla Murders,” and on Prime, “Trapped.” Both are Icelandic, and very atmospheric.

Streaming platforms need content, and their demand has given a real boost to movie and and TV production around the world.

The Tiger King is the number one flick on Netflix right now out of their 169 million international viewers, something else for Oklahoman's to be proud of

The other day I watched The Adventures of Buckaroo Bonzai Across the 8th Dimension. Quirky 80s sci-fi movie. Not for everybody, though. People usually either really hate it or really love it. I'm in the "love it" camp.

Another quirky movie I really like is Mr. Right, available on Netflix. I've actually seen it a bunch of times. It's basically an action-comedy/rom-com, with Sam Rockwell as a hitman who kills the people that hire him because, "Murder is wrong."

Not obscure, but you can watch all 3 Indiana Jones movies on Netflix.

I'm currently watching The Foreigner on Netflix. I saw it when it first came out in the theater. Really good movie. Jackie Chan does really good in a much more dramatic role than I'm used to seeing.

I've got a bunch of movies on DVD. Haven't got into them yet. Still exploring options on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.

I've got the box set of the first three Bourne movies. Fun action movies.

The Accountant is one of my favorite action movies. I've seen it multiple times.

I also have The Thin Man box set, with William Powell and Myrna Loy. Lots of fun, though the first two are the best of the series.

I could probably keep going, but I think I'll go ahead and stop there.

In the vein of good Netflix foreign shows:

"Money Heist" (La Casa de Papel) from Spain
"Fauda" from Israel
"Babylon Berlin" from Germany

I think all have English dub tracks, but all are better original with subtitles.

We just finished it last night. Found it very VERY disturbing. What magnificent creatures they are. But it is disgusting the way they have been and continue to be by some of the most despicable people you can imagine. There were no good guys in this whole thing.

Sure, who wouldn't like to cuddle with a baby tiger cub. But think about what happens to them when they are not small and cute any longer. think of the atrocious conditions of their lives.

I take some satisfaction that Joe Exotic is now in a cage. Talk about the shoe being on the other foot..... I hope he never gets out and I hope that someday stringent laws will be passed and enforced. Every one of those folks should be in prison. They are all criminals and have no concern for the animals whos lives they destroy.

I gotta go lie down!

There's a whole series of wry British comedies from the wonderful Ealing studios from the late '40s to the early '60s. Most feature Alec Guinness. The first and best is the great "Kind Hearts and Coronets" form 1949. Alec Guinness, Dennis Price and the very sexy Joan Greenwood. Here's a quick comment from John Landis.
Others include "The Man in the White Suit", "The Lady Killers", "The Lavender Hill Mob", and "Our Man in Havana".

Best regards,

We watched "A Bronx Tale" last night. Really good movie, a bit too much profanity, but a friend who lived in that neighborhood as a kid said that's the way it was. It's a tale of growing up, a tug of war between good and evil, and redemption.
Just the street scenes set in the 50's and 60's stirred a lot of memories for me.

Nothing exotic here:
The Star Wars series - I have them on DVD.
The "Mummy" series - This is 3 DVDs
The Indiana Jones series: Still entertaining.

For all yall Texas boys:

ZZ Top; that little old band from Texas.

It is an excellent documentary on Texas from the 50's till today. It shows the impact ZZ had on Texas as a destination.

This is even for everyone. There's not a lot of playing going on as you might expect. There's just so much story to tell. Slow in the beginning, but picks up nicely.

I just watched this for the first time a couple weeks ago. Highly entertaining!

And we watched "Knives Out". Also very entertaining, and one of the best murder mysteries I've seen.

I still need to watch that one. I was hoping to catch it in the theater last year but wasn't able to.

Whether its during Christmas week when i take extra vaca days off, or on weekends now when my usual fun activities are limited/closed; I tend to binge movies. The Hobbit and LOTR will be ones I watch every year, I’m now finishing up the last Star Wars trilogy; and will sneak in sets like the John Wick or Sicario movies when able. Some movies/series I can watch over and over. And if the wife isn't really interested in one she'll just hang and read.

We have a nice tv and a real nice sound system, so i tend to enjoy action/fantasy where the visuals are there and i can shake the walls.

I guess I look at the Tiger King a little differently than most. The people there are pretty weird but they seem to really love tigers and the big cats seem happy wrestling, swimming, running, and playing with the workers. Compare that to the animal rights sanctuary where they don't think humans should have any interaction with the cats so the big tigers just walk around in a tiny pen all day wasting their life away bored to death and waiting to die. If I was a tiger I would much rather live with Joe Exotic and his band of misfits than with the animal rights lady Carol.

Patton, Midway, We Were Soldiers, A Bridge Too Far, all good war films.

Add, Safari, made in 1956, starring Victor Mature and Janet Leigh. On YouTube. The hero has to hunt both the Mau-Mau who killed his son and a lion so dangerous that he's called Hatari. (Means Danger in Swahili.)

Look for various British rifles, Janet's Winchester M- 94, and a Sten that changes from MK II to MK III in various scenes! Cops and soldiers have a mix of Lee-Enfields, No. 1 MK III and No 4.

An Ithaca M-37 helps to kill terrorists, too.

I saw this advertised (it looked excellent), wanted to see it, then forgot about it. I have been doing this almost all my adult life. I need to start making notes on my phone when I see the ads, then rent them when they come out.

Add, The Seduction, starring my late mother's student, Morgan Fairchild. She played a TV anchor stalked by a crazed fan.

The gun star is her Ithaca M-37. You'll have to guess the gauge: I asked her a few years after she made the movie and she could barely recall the film! But I think it was among her best performances!

And it made a point of noting that the police can't really protect you very well. I hope that lesson wasn't lost on the audience. It's a rare theme in anti-gun Hollywood!

“The Andromeda Strain” - the original one

I’m trying to find a copy (book) of “The White Plague” by Frank Herbert
If I can’t, I’ll break out my copy of “Farnham’s Freehold” by Heinlein. I haven’t read it in years.
Generally, I prefer books to watching movies.

I remember watching the reruns and later TV movies with my dad. He was a big fan. He was into a bunch of mystery TV shows...Columbo; Murder, She Wrote; Diagnosis Murder; Matlock; etc.

Very enjoyable movie.

FWIW, I like Luc Besson's movies. Leon: The Professional is my favorite of his, and probably one of my all-time favorite movies. I also liked La Femme Nikita (and the American re-make, Point of No Return) and Wasabe. I even liked Anna, watching it in the theater when it came out, though I will say it was basically a more contemporary re-telling of La Femme Nikita, with the current style of action sequences. I haven't seen Lucy yet. Don't know if I will. Still not happy about the stupid "we only use 5% of our brains" BS.

That reminds me. Atomic Blonde is another good action movie.

Not a movie, but...

Just start watching "the Office." When it finishes, start it again!

I'm not a big tv watcher, but stuck at home....

One of the channels I get is called "FETV", for "Family Entertainment". They show about 4 episode of Perry Mason every day. I've been watching quite a few. They are still in the 1958-1959 BW era. Great stories!!

Best Regards, Les

Wanted it for a long time, so today I bought all 4 Seasons of the original “Man from U.N.C.L.E.”. Watched “The Vulcan Affair” tonight...from Sept 1964 in black and white. Great Series...

I don't have a television so anything I watch is online. Lately I've been lucky and found some real gems.

The Italian Job. The 1966 original, not that lousy remake
The Caine Mutiny
Invasion Of the Body Snatchers 1950s
My Man Godfrey
Close Encounters
Dr. Strangelove
Bite The Bullet
War of the World's 1953
It Happened One Night
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
Stagecoach

And quite a few others. I like old cinema.

I only have about 6 more episodes to go before I'm done with all nice seasons.

I started watching them back in Sept.

I don't have television.

For TV, Corner Gas, a 6 season comedy from Canada developed by comedian Brent Butt.

The daily goings on of a small Saskatchewan farming town of Dog River, centered on the local gas station/diner.

If you watch it, you must watch episode 1 first. After that, it doesn't really matter if you watch them in order or not.

When it started they didn't think theyd make it a whole season. It turned out to be the most popular Canadian produced TV show ever.

Second Hand Lions. Great movie!

A young boy is sent to spend the summer with his elderly uncles (Robert Duvall & Micheal Caine). The uncles have lived rather interesting lifes and tell the boy about them. And get into a bit of mischief along the way.

I think this is one of Duvall's best performances.

We used to have Netflix. We got it when "Longmire" switched to them. While having it we got hooked on a Turkish series, "Resurrection Ertugrul". About the father of the man who founded the Ottoman Empire, Osman. I think Netflix now has four of the five seasons (all subtitled).

We got so hooked we now watch the Osman series (1st season) on ATV out of Turkey (via Youtube). Our Turkish is very poor but I am remembering more words every week.

Both the Ertugrul and Osman series do one show a week; each show runs about 2.5 hours. Netflix chopped up the shows into 40 something minutes each which didn't do them any favors. But still good.

Pretty good series and extremely interesting.

For those who like old westerns and "film noir". Check out YouTube. Many other movies also. This is a whole new world to me as I have just been dragged into the 21st century and now have high speed internet after 20 years of dial up! Be even better after I get my Trump bucks and buy a "smart" TV and can watch them on a big screen from my easy chair!

Just watched, last night, the new “Midway” movie on Amazon Prime. I was impressed. It was a good movie, not great but solidly good.
