That cannot be 1889. He's carrying a Winchester 1895.
Edit. Unless his name was John Moses Browning. But that ain't him.

According to google search, it’s Art Pulliam -
What do you think he did with the Yotes?
Photographer was Solomon Butcher, Custer County, Nebraska, 1889.
Art Pulliam of the Sargent area in Custer County not only had a newer rifle than his neighbors, he was a better shot. Coyotes are among the most difficult animals to hit, and although the predators were plentiful at the turn of the century, bagging two in a day was especially noteworthy and would no doubt be the topic of conversation around pot bellied stoves for several weeks.

Those are not big bullets.
These are big bullets.
.405 Winchester. TR called his 95 in .405 "Medicine gun for lions".

Just how come he had a "95" in "89"? Was he a "time traveller"?

OK. I also thought Model 1895.
So if the 1889 date is correct, what other Available Rifle could it be?

Looks to be the bar V E, if the coyote is not hiding part
of the brand. Someone could research if that brand is
still registered in the state.

Look at the lines of shading in the action, it is an 1895! I see wrong captions of photos all the time.
This is like buying a gun, let the gun speak for itself, and forget the supposed story! The gun says: "I kilt these two 'yoats after I was made!"

Win Model 1895 was introduced in 1895...that rifle definitely appears to be a 1895 rifle...regardless, a potent rifle/caliber for yotes but I bet it’s primary use was for game much larger...excellent photo and thank you for sharing.

Yep. Old Arkansawyer was right. Bar V E. It also looks like it was done with a running iron and not a stamp iron. I've seen some gosh awful looking jobs done with a running iron and this one definitely has all the characteristics.
I saw one once that had to be a foot long and eight inches high. I don't know what they called it, but I would have probably read it as the "dragging C slash." It was a mess. It was on the horse's left shoulder. I was surprised the horse survived the branding!
Also, I always find it interesting to see old pictures of horses...even as recent as the 1940's and 1950's. Boy! They sure have changed over the years. These earlier horses look a lot like today's feral horses or mustangs....hammer head, goose butt, etc. That old bay roan in the picture looks a lot like a blue roan mustang I had as a pack horse years ago. Those old mustangs might not look pretty, but they were tougher than whang leather. Still are.

None. That is a 1895 if I ever saw one.
So. Wrong caption.

28" is one of the common lengths, 30" was special order, and I've never heard of 32", but anything is possible! A 28" barrel in something like 30-40 Government, and no magazine tube would appear to be a long, long smoke pole!

Lots of possibilities here
Maybe he was trapping, although we don’t see any gear, and there’s blood running down the horse’s side (again, well-trained calm horse)
Of course, he might’ve shot one in the trap. Sometimes you’re afraid it’ll pull out of the trap and need to shoot. If you’re trapping for fur, any M1895 cartridge would likely take a bite out of your earnings. If you’re working on eradication, it’s different.

Mule Packer, agree with you on the running iron brand. Also with
my very limited experience branding equines, a small iron should
be used on young animals as the brand will grow a lot larger as
they age. Cattle not so much, just my observations.
I always thought a mustang mare and mammoth jack cross
would make for an extra tough mule. I would like to have one.

When I took this picture I didn’t notice the large branding on the cow to the right. I was talking to the owner and we were mostly discussing the dead cow who was hit by a vehicle in this open range grazing area.

That's not a brand, it is graffiti or a "gang tag" and not a good one at that!
I'm surprised that the horse survived. It probably walks with a limp.
