Default How has the pandemic affected you?

Thus far, we have been pretty insulated from the effects of the pandemic where we live. My family has lived life pretty normally. Some businesses in town have closed temporarily, or have restrictions. Otherwise, life has been normal.

The wife and I work at a private boarding school that runs off private donations. Of course, like public schools, we have been closed for two months. We always thought that the school was pretty well off and had money in reserve, but this pandemic has them scared and they are acting as if doomsday is here. I can understand being frugal and cautious. They have continued to pay staff. My wife is hourly and is getting paid through next week when her contract ends.

Houseparents are contracted every year. The school recinded the contacts they first put out and issued new contracts the basically say if the school closed down for an extended period (or doesn't reopen in the fall) because of the virus or any other reason, the school doesn't have to honor the contracts and may opt to cancel or amend benefits.

As I step back and look at the big picture, we are still in a national and global crisis. We don't know how this will affect the global economy. The reality is that the school may not open in the fall which means that neither the wife nor I will have a job.

Therefore, I've decided to cancel vacation plans and hold onto my reserve cash until we know the school will be open and things are back to normal. How has the pandemic affected your life/plans?

It’s easy to tell where people live from these threads. I live on the edge of a decent sized city and my state has 1100 deaths so far. I’m mostly retired,I’ve limited my exposure to other people and wear a mask when dealing with others. (I live in a high risk household.88 yr old mom and I stroked at the end of January ) I have a sister in a very rural state who believes that if it isn’t a hoax,it won’t get there anyway. She deals with scores if not hundreds of people a day. I do my damndest not to call her an idiot out loud lol

Still working as I work at a Wal Mart DC. The overtime has stopped but we are still busy. I miss going to workout and eating out which I only do 1 or 2 times a month. Everything else is the same as I do not go to movies or bars.

I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop. I have been getting paid for work I'm doing at home, but it's not my real job. All that work is back at the office on computers with no Web access. At some point my customer may run out of patience, especially as he has no control over the facility I work in regarding a return to the office.

The school year is coming to a close so my wife will be done soon too. Fortunately, I still have a bunch of cash stashed from the period when I lost a bunch of family and my first wife. Just gotta keep our heads down and spend wisely.

I wouldn't disagree, but it is what it is. It is the reaction to the virus that is worse than the virus itself. The organization that I work for opAtes off of donations. People are hoarding cash based on fear, whether those fears are founded or not.

I can't believe we have stayed in for the most part. Having diabetes and overweight my wife has done most of our shopping. Before shut down we ate out a lot. I find it hard to believe how much we were spending eating out all the time.

MY job is enviro clean up. The job for this year was canned by Ohio in an across the board state reduction in budget by 20%. My wife works in Bath and Body Works DC and they are in their second week back, but just her department. The foreseeable future looks good for the 2 of us. 3 of our 4 adult children are considered essential. And the 4th is in IT quality assurance and is looking at a pretty good near future.

I'll pick up some odd jobs to have pocket and additional revolver(S) money. If I can work 3 or 4 days a month, it will be sweet!

I have been sequestered for just about ten weeks. I was looking at some down time anyway for knee replaceoment surgery. I got in for that on the last day before they stopped doing elective surgery. About the time of the lockdown, the schools closed and I got a layoff notice from my employer. However, my company is still getting paid under its contract with the school district and so has continued to pay its drivers. That will come to an end at the end of the school year. At that point, I will apply for unemployment. School bus drivers cannot ordinarily collect unemployment over the summer, but I gather it will be available for us this year.

For the first month after my surgery, I stayed with my son and his family. Since then, I have been home alone with my two dogs. It is pretty boring, but I have things to do.

I put in a rock bed I wanted for a couple years, but kept putting off.

Added a few more sprinkler heads to my irrigation system.

I wore a mask for a while, but have slacked off on it, except if I go to CVS. They have a sign up "asking" people to wear them. Was on my bike a couple weeks ago and stopped there, I was the only one in the store without a mask. People looked at me funny.

Changed my work routine, instead of 6 afternoons a week I'm doing full 3 days a week. My system is confused! Cooking and baking and eating too much. Fortunately I had a two week working vacation to AZ & CA in February so staying close to home hasn't been too bad. But I sure do miss seeing my granddaughters!

I have a construction business with only one small new dental office building being constructed and other projects on hold. The phone didn't even ring for a month but now I have other projects starting and am extremely busy and most other construction contractors I talk to are swamped with work. Here, most everything is opened back up but not many people are going into restaurants and my wife still doesn't want to go to one which is no big loss to me. I'm glad my gym is open and my outdoor gun range has always been open and I went fishing with some guys from church and played a little golf, we also had a couple over for (social distance) drinks on the patio one Saturday which was nice. Yesterday I got my Suzuki 4 wheeler repaired and talked to the shop owner and he is covered up with business and quite frustrated and said he can't hire anyone because they want to stay home and collect unemployment and the $600/week stimulus checks.

I have been lucky, for the most part. I retired the second time May 2015. Genie passed-away August 2015, so I have lived alone since that time. I have always been comfortable in my “own skin,” so for the most part I do not have much of a problem with the stay at home suggestions. I do though miss my weekly meal meetings with assorted friends, and the occasional long weekend visits with friends.

As I count on a small dividend income to supplement my retirement income, I am watching the market closely, and am limiting my non necessary expenses.

If I had a worry, it is not for myself, but for future generations, who may have to spend years pay off and recouping from the financial mess the virus has created.

It's mostly residuals of the pandemic that we have no control over that have had impacts on us;

- Supply chain to stores has been interrupted so that some common products are not always readily available as they once were.

- Some services that my employer and family use have been interrupted because those businesses have been interrupted due to government over reach.

- My employer has suspended 401K matching funds for the rest of the year due to the economic impact of government over reach.

- My place of worship has been FORCED, due to government over reach, to restrict our on site worship and use of property.

- My wife had a previously scheduled mammogram cancelled not because the medical center was full of COVID patients, but because of the unnecessary suspension of non-essential medical procedures due to government over reach.

- I dealt with an employee who suffered 2nd degree burns on his hands because of the use of alcohol based hand sanitizer. We usually only use non-alcohol based hand sanitizer or the use of nitrile gloves in our field work, but due to the COVID scare both have are not readily available as they once were. My employee was applying alcohol based hand sanitizer when he experienced a static discharge as he walked across a carpeted floor and his hands ignited in blue flame.

- Since I am fortunate that my employment has not been interrupted, my wife and I in cooperation with our church, provide a meal to a different family every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evening. These are families who have been furloughed or are working reduced hours due to COVID.

- I have bought one additional handgun and one rifle with an abundance of ammunition, the reasoning being I'm preparing for more potential government over reach as so many other scared people roll over and let the government "take care of them".

Oh, in many ways. To begin with, I am old, overweight, have high blood pressure and stage 3 kidney failure... so I am a prime candidate for becoming a statistic if I get the virus. And to make matters worse, my good wife is an RN in a Boston hospital where the virus has been very bad, including infecting an unbelievable number of health care workers. If she gets it, I'm a dead man.

So I have to be extremely careful. I only go out when I absolutely have to. When I go out, I wear a mask and gloves. I use gobs of anti-viral disinfectant. We have a plan in place just in case the good wife comes down with it.

While retired, my current "job" is taking care of two little old ladies (my mother & MIL) in their homes and, at the same time, I'm trying to finish building our retirement place. The latter has been held up in many ways by the virus (suppliers closed, no permits/inspections, workers unable or afraid to work, etc.).

Meanwhile, I am on hold for kidney stone removal, foot surgery and dental work. And, of course, I can't even get a haircut so I look like a bum.

Financially, we are okay. Supplies-wise, we are fine. Food-wise, we are having problems, but far from starving.

Gun shops have reopened here but with restrictions including a mandatory appointment scheme which discourages casual browsing (how I find & buy most of my guns).

Overall, it really sucks... and you know that the worst is yet to come once government tolls up the damages.

For the most part not so much except for our church only doing online services for several weeks. Best we could do at the time, and we are now assembling outside - awesome to be back with church family (even with social distancing). Other than that wearing a mask in public to try and be as safe as possible.

I've been wanting to go more into retirement mode, so without customers needing my services,(classic NCR cash register repair in bars) this is a perfect transitional time.
I only have a couple of dear friends, who I would see infrequently pre-covid, so not much of an adjustment now.
Though I live in one of the most affected areas(suburban NY), I'm doing much more walking. My neighborhood has woodland trails and streets with little or no human or car traffic. Zero risk in my opinion.
The only time that I might be near someone, is at the supermarket or hardware store, where masks are worn by everyone.
And I'm loving the new big screen tv that I bought to make home life better.

It has effected me very little. Being retired and really never was a socializer my only outings where people are around is the grocery store and post office.
I go to the grocery store earlier now because they have senior hours 6-8 AM.
Today I'm prepping my boat in hopes of a fishing trip next week weather permitting.

Methinks it will be more than just future generations. I think our own generation is also going to get slammed pretty good too. State government, in particular, is going to go wild on us once the damages are tallied.

I did add to the ammo stash just before prices zoomed up out of sight... but new additions to the arsenal are on hold until my state releases our MA dealers from their "limited appointments" stranglehold.

Not a whole lot. I'm retired and was convalescing from a broken kneecap and shin bone. Had to stints in the ICU just before the pandemic broke wide open, so I was pretty much house bound. I'm very high risk, so I don't go anywhere unless it is off hours and I wear a mask (i.e. early morning to Home Depot). Wife is also high risk and, largely because of me, her bosses make he work at home. She goes to the office early and comes home at 7AM. We are working on home project (renovations, garden, etc.). Yesterday, I cut 3 small trees and bucked 1 1/2 of them.

Staying home ==I'm cooking a lot. Making pasta, bread, lasagna, home-made spaghetti sauce, home-made sausages of several types.

We try to support our favorite Mexican restaurant by ordering takeout on Fridays (DATE NIGHT)==a few Margaritas, shots of Mescal or Coronas and satellite TV or discs=we are binging on Dexter, right now!)

Dogs are loving it!

Oh, I am an extreme introvert, so I'm doing OK. Wife is an extrovert, so I'm keeping the guns away from her!

I'm in the state with the most cases and have done my part by not traveling to other areas. We are locked down, but not as bad as some might think. I had the virus, was sick for 5 weeks and was amazed with my age and my underlying medical conditions that I did not have to be hospitalized. Got really sick in October, spent 5 days in the hospital with something they could not figure out, so my doctor thinks I might have build up some antibodies. Had blood drawn yesterday for antibody testing and should have the results on Monday or so.

I sell real estate, which is a 1099 employment and no unemployment insurance is paid and no benefits expected. I part time bartended at two restaurants, one in the Hampton and one in Manhattan to pick up new real estate customers and because I enjoy it. Interesting that at 71 and for the first time in my life, I applied for Unemployment and because I tended bar on the books, I am getting weekly checks for that and New York also decided to pay unemployment benefits to 1099 recipients and I get payment for that too.

Now for what I am doing during all this? So bored after being sick, I have been looking at guns and have spent too much money during this time having already bought 6 new ones in the last three weeks.

Wife is in escrow and I worked title before going back to school, so I understand! I am 69 with a weak heart, diabetes, and hypertension (why I have heart issues). My first ICU stint was for edema compressing my heart. They said it was acute and extreme bronchitis and couldn't tell why my x-rays showed my lower lung to be clouded but it wasn't pneumonia, COVID? Maybe! But I'm playing it safe.

Bartending, being around people (Chris Coumo was one of my regulars) I probably came in contact there.

In 1969 I was burnt in a fire and was medically retired from the airlines until I started flying again 9 years later. In 2008 I got throat cancer. Watch what you e-mail. Google that! In 2017 I got a Pacemaker to allow me to still fly and keep my 2nd class medical. In 2018 I had prostate cancer and had treatment and then due to the lung damage I had in the fire in 1969, I ended up with COPD.

So I am shocked that I survived this. Two weeks into it, I update my will, send a list of all my firearms and values to a friend to sell for my estate if I had passed.

So far so good.

Default Effects for me!

In some ways its has been quite the bother in others no big deal.

The wife and I normally eat out 2-3 times a week. Do most of our food shopping the last week of the month, (that when her pension check appears in her checking account.) Other shopping as needed. Now many restaurants are closed or have a severely restricted take out menu.

Same many stores are closed or highly restricted, with each seeming to have their own rules and of course all are different. Doctors appointments canceled or easier ones done by phone. Everybody wearing masks like their trying out for a role in a doctor/hospital tv show! Others but you understand.

Now for sort of the same. Very nice and peaceful taking a walk along the lake roads. Getting lots of outside work done as the weather gets better. Shooting off our range on our property as for a while all ranges were close, and many still are. Every skeet range that I know of closed!

Many/ most LGS are figuring out ways to open. Most are just walk in close to what it used to be. Items for sale seen to be plentiful but prices have went North. In fact things are good enough that I was called by a LGS and asked if I wanted to work part time for a while. Said no I like my time to my own and of course there I would have to have my mask on for hours.
Yes I wear the mask when out when we get around people like at stores!

Could say a lot more but you get the drift!

Be well brothers and sisters

Dave

I'm so glad I retired Aug 2019! I was working part time at the only indoor range in our city until the stay at home order came along. My wife and I are fine staying home, one of the reasons I retired-so I could stay home. I also have to help care for my mom, who is home-bound at 82.

I've been tumbling/sorting brass, reloading and cleaning my firearms. Rescued 2 beagles before this virus came along and love having them to love on (and they love it too!) My wife and I don't go out much, miss going to church; when we do we wear masks and keep sanitizer and disinfectant wipes with us. Not sure when the range will open, but have made the decision not to go back until I see how things turn out. I loved working there, enjoyed the guys I worked with and enjoyed the free range time. But I'm not willing to chance getting this virus and possibly passing it to my wife or my mom.

Hope everyone is staying safe, best wishes to all. :-)

Biggest change for us is that we can’t do our typical seasonal travel schedule between the US and Japan. (We have residences in both countries.)

We usually come to the US early in the year, return to Japan early spring, and then back to the US at the beginning of the summer until well into the fall. This year the plan was to return to Japan on 31 March, but now we don’t know when, or if, we’ll return this year.

But we are so much more fortunate compared to most in that I am retired and have a comfortable fixed income and savings. While I support the “lock downs,” wearing masks, social distancing, etc., I do recognize that if I were younger and needed to return to a workplace to support my family, my views would certainly be different about lockdowns.

The social isolation does not bother me at all.

While I’m retired and an at risk person my life really hasn’t changed any, except everything is closed and there is nowhere to go!
My wife works in Healthcare and she got it and survived it, took 3 weeks to get over it. Why I didn’t get it god only knows but we did keep our distances.
The Governor of the state is playing games and still has everything closed, I need a haircut and the dog needs groomed but we still can’t do either. I can go to Lowe’s though or get a burger from McDonalds.
No issues with toilet paper, paper towels or meat though!
Sorry for those that died from it and sorry to see it destroying our economy!
This is getting a bit old and a bit overplayed!

But we’ll survive it

Very little effect on us.
Retired. Beach was closed some spring time
fishing was a bust.

Our normal spring road trip was postponed.
Seldom an exact destination anyway.
Normally pretty simple....
Drive 800-900 miles North and turn left.

Stay safe..

I'm a trial lawyer. Haven't been to court in over 2 months and haven't worn a suit to the office either. Still come in every day, just handling things over the internet and phone. We are starting to do hearings with Zoom, so I keep a sport coat, tie and dress shirt here in case of a hearing. Do all the shopping for my folks as well, since they are elderly and don't need to be exposed to this mess anymore than necessary. Our Saturday evening barbecue beer busts are over, now its just a bit of socially distanced plinking followed by a couple of cold ones, then home. At least the weather is normal, four tornadoes roared through my county last night. Got lucky, with minimal damage to anything.

Living in Vegas it's a big trap for many. My wife and I have largely avoided it, but I have heard others say they didn't realize how much they were spending on dining out and Starbucks until it had to stop.

Having helped home school the kids these past 3 months has taught me that parts of my brain needed the cobwebs blown out.

Got me in double whammy. Christmas week had emergency surgery. Never been in hospital since born, on no meds, ace physicals and had to get by pass. Just recovering when CV19 hit. Have had hair cut and to Docs 3 times since 1/1/20. Go to PO in town and store about once a week. Only things open in town of 300. Our bank closed because no drive through. Ohio is suppose to open up next Thursday. I need haircut bad.

I miss being able to socialize with family and friends. I have always gone to the gym pool three days a week and we have always eat out a lot. Like many on here I didn't realize how much that was costing. So, staying home and doing many projects that I have been putting off. Repairing the barn tin, new screens on the porch door, planting a lot of container flowers, big garden and the last project wiring a carport for lights. I was like the energizer bunny.

That's where it all went down hill. On my final trip down off the ladder i missed the bottom step and fell. I destroyed my left shoulder by severely tearing the rotator cuff and pulling a staple from a former shoulder surgery,

I go in Monday for an MRI, the doctor gave me a pretty grim diagnosis on it's condition. He said he figures my only alternative is a total reverse shoulder replacement.

That folks is how you can go from an eighty year old superman to a liability in an instant. A good friend of mine has always said "It's only a few short steps from the castle to the outhouse."

This too will pass.

Wow, I only had a simple broke shoulder and arm problem when I was much younger.

Good Luck and heal well!
