Our 1993 YJ has 206K on the clock and runs like a champ. I ran into a problem after about 180K that I could not get a reliable replacement slave cylinder for the clutch. I went through 3 of them in 20K miles. They had a lifetime warranty, but that gets painful real quick. I swapped over to the 94+ slave cylinder with some mild modifications and all is right with the world again. That has been the only real problem other than basic maintenance.

Jeeps are the coolest vehicle ever built, some men just can't handle their masculinity. lol
My 97 TJ has over 200k and in the last 5 years has never broken down once, it's like the Energizer Bunny.

Not that old - it's a 2014. Gets me around the Nevada desert nicely. Slightly beefier coil springs and various skid plates help a lot.

1947 Willys. This was taken about 14 years ago when my grandson got his first ride. All original except I converted it to 12V and replaced the seats. Still have it. Still runs great. Doesn't use a drop of oil

Met a guy a few weeks ago that has that same Jeep, but he'd had a complete frame off restoration on it and it was too sweet to say the least. He'd kept it all stock too.

I would love to have one. especially if I lived out west.
BUT it has to have one of those cool Snorkels and of course a wench!

My neighbor has one,
Don't think I have ever seen it dirty.

I have considered doing that but haven't convinced myself to put the time and money into it for a play toy. The body is in really good shape. Only 2 little rust spots. The motor is sound. Doesn't use a drop of oil. For now it's my "rat Willys".
I have an aluminum top for it with doors for colder weather since there's no heater. The top was made by a company in Kansas City. Forget the name.

My 1990 YJ, got it three years ago with a bit of body rust and showed 288,000 miles on the title. Fixed all the cosmetic stuff and spent some dough to make it like it is now. Pretty much a Happy Camper.

Apologies for crashing this Jeep thread, but there aren't enough Toyota FJ owners to generate a stand alone thread. Jeeps are nice vehicles but for my money I gotta go with the FJ (even if they aren't available in the US anymore). Mine is a 2010 Trail Teams model, full-time 4wd, with a 6-speed manual tranny. Don

I've had three of them. First was a 1985, then an 1987 and then a 1990. I don't recall having any pictures of them and if I do they are certainly buried somewhere.

I had pretty good luck with them and the 4 wheel drive systems were really great! I only had one major mechanical problem with the last one - but it was repaired under warranty. I'll never forget taking my wife to the hospital in our first Jeep to deliver our second child, She called it a "malted machine" and said it might cause her to deliver the baby right in the car because it rode so stiffly & busily.

Greetings Boys & Girls,

I wanted to give a quick update to my Wrangler project. I just did an overnight trial run and all worked out great (pics attached). The tent worked just fine.

Likely Monday I will be heading out for a few weeks on the road to 'rescue' my Wife who has been stuck in Maine these last few months. It's 3,000 miles (one way) from where I am, so I may not be around to post for a while.

Cheerio,

Roy

Roy, you and I both like similar toys. My 2006 Wrangler Unlimited is black and my Triumph is a 3 cylinder Thunderbird. I haven't figured out how to post pictures or I would.

Cooool thread..... not to hijack but to solicit some advice/wisdom.

Side by side ATVs are the rage here in Pa. I've got a 2012 Polaris 800cc all tricked out by a neighbor who is also a dealer ...... sold it to me to get a 1000 for himself. A lot of Twp roads ( but not state rds) in our area of the Laurel Highlands are now open to ATVs and snowmobiles.

Newer SxS are 4 seaters and almost the size of a older 2 door jeep...... and go for around $20,000..... one neighbor has one with heat/ac and power windows........

I've been thinking a jeep would be nice to have at the lake for running around. This thread has me thinking about a Jeep again. The prepper in me thinks an older one without all the electronics would be the way to go.

What would be a good time frame to look for a jeep without all the electronics? Do need a auto transmission.

Hi,

I'm not expert at all but I hear you on the electronics. This was one of the reasons I went with an older Jeep.

I believe the new model (YJ) started in 2007.

My Wrangler is 2006 (TJ Unlimited) and has no power windows and no central locking, just a cracking stereo.

Love the old school 'un-connected' feel.

Good luck.

Cheerio,

Roy

I think he means one with out all the sensors, electronic fuel injection, electronic ignition system, and of course a master computer to run it all. For that, you would have to go back way before 2007. Maybe Daisey Duke is selling hers.

Hi Gents,

I thought I would post a little 'from the road' update.

We are on our way back home but my wife is feeling a little 'fragile', so we are taking a break from camping and are in a hotel for a couple of nights.

My Jeep Wrangler 'Safari' has been running great. Although the awful roads in New York State really beat us all up. Aside from that I love how she is running and when a choice camping spot can be found the tent is working great.

Long term I want to get a fridge to fit in the Jeep and an awning. With a little more work this could be a great set up.

In the meantime here are a few pics of some of our nicer days.

Cheerio,

Roy

I always liked Jeep but never bought one. Now I wouldn't mind having an old M715 for my business... just as a form of advertising of course.

But I've got tell you, the new Gladiator is growing on me for some reason...

Greetings all,

I'm back from my road trip so wanted to update all.

For those interested, some statistics and details:

Total travel days; 21
Total mileage; 6,909
MPG; 15.6
Alcohol consumed; two bottles of Scotch and one bottle of Bourbon.
Miss Congeniality award goes to Lillibelle (my little dog), who was a complete hero throughout the whole trip.
Highest elevation camped; Grand Masa Colorado at 11,332 (see attached photo).
Coldest camp night …. See above!

Considering the Jeep was technically finished just ‘three’ days before I left, she has ran flawlessly. One bolt from he Safari hardtop vibrated out and the inspection light under the hood fell off - both very minor.

The rooftop tent worked wonderfully. Setup and breakdown is seconds. Even in the worst weather it was snug and dry. The hight keeps you out of the way of beers, snakes, scorpions etc. and gives stunning views.

I've got more project planned form my Wrangler 'Safari' but overall I'm totally thrilled with how she performed.

Cheerio,

Roy

Great Jeep, and great trip Roy! Grand Mesa is a great spot to spend a night or two.

I'll be another party crasher with our '92 Bronco. I let a '66 Bronco get away from me ~20 years ago, and I'm not going to let it happen again! I keep going and looking at Jeeps, but I just can't make myself give up the Bronco. Especially for what new Jeeps cost. I was at York Dodge the other day getting the oil changed in our diesel and they only had two 2 door Wranglers on the lot... both Rubicons, and both north of $50k!

Our Bronco was stock when we bought back in '13, but since then, I've done a lot with it. Lift, fabricated bumpers from scratch, winch, lots of little stuff, etc...

Currently swapping in a manual transfer case so we can flat tow it behind our camper to the San Juans in CO later this summer.

I'll keep an eye out for you around town...

This stays hooked to my boat most of the time, just for convenience.
In the Fall, it's often my go-to for using at the hunting lease 45 minutes away.
A 1990 XJ (Cherokee) with the ol' 4.0 IL six. Around 250k on it now. Had it since '92. Runs good, everything works, good a/c.
Probably worth nearly nothing - but great as a 'spare' vehicle.

When it needed a paint job, that was too expensive for me, so it got a coating all over of O.D. bedliner.
Lift is nothing more than an added leaf spring in the rear and longer shackles. Front is coil springs from a V8 Grand Cherokee.
