I know of a dog that used to have to get de-quilled about once a week. You would think he would learn.

There is a technique to removing them by the way:

Herman doesn't think so. I live west of the Cascades in the Northern rain forest about 60 mile from the ocean.

Went hunting with the owner of the ranch we manage one day. Took my 1.5 year old Britt out. 100 yards from the truck he locks up solid so I walk in to flush the bird and nothing. He was not prone to lying so I gave the bush a kick. Dog jumps into the bush and exits the same way he went in with a face full of quills.
Thankfully the owner was a dog man and was good about holding and calming the poor dog while I plucked quills for about 20 minutes.
Three weeks later quills were still working their way out the back of his jaw line and neck.
Lesson learned. Check very carefully when you are removing quills and keep looking for at least two weeks.

Herman could make for a prickly situation coming up.

One of the most scared times in my life was as a kid, sitting in an outhouse on a cold, foggy, rainy night in northern Maine.

Heard something outside, then it sounded like it was coming thru the wall. I burst out of there like a shot being fired. Had to be a bear, maybe Bigfoot?

Turned out to be a porcupine chewing on the back of the outhouse. They do like salty wood...

I rarely see them alive around here. Mostly dead on the side of the road. I did look up into a tree once on a hike and spot one looking down at me. Evidently they are great climbers.

I have never seen one "in person" or heard of one around here before.
South Louisiana, we got lots of Nutria, Racoons, Possum, and Armadillos though.

I had no idea their range dipped down into TX. I learned something! That video is great above too—I did not realize their quills are simply hairs, albeit hair on steroids with barbs!

The bane of outhouses throughout the north country. For some reason they like chewing holes through them.
