Default What’s going on with the USPS?

I mailed out two boxes 2nd day priority mail on Tuesday and tracking said delivery Friday by 8:00pm. Delivery time came and went with no update for nearly 48 hours. Now tracking website is claiming major delays in transportation due to the chinese flu. What gives? Are most of their drivers calling in sick due to the flu?

What sucks about it is that they are items I sold on ebay and paypal has a hold on funds until delivery. Dang it! It’s my money and I want it now!

IMO, it isn't just the USPS. I have purchased some items on eBay, and they got here within a day or two of the projected delivery date, if not earlier. I placed an order with Sportsmans Guide and it was coming FEDEX GROUND, it showed shipped, but never left the depot for a week. Another purchase was from Anchorage, it was routed via Washington D.C., got held up there for a few days before it got to NJ.

I had a Priority Mail package show up lickety-split this week. Was due tomorrow and showed up yesterday.

Their tracking system seems to be the worst on the market.

You've got the same experience I had a couple of weeks ago expecting a gun coming to me from Ohio. Tracking went from "on time" to "delayed" to their site was down to "tomorrow", etc. etc.

I just received a holster via USPS from a member in Oklahoma. It came a day earlier than stated.

Can't trust anyone.

It's not the USPS (or FedEx, or UPS, etc.) - it's the railroads and trucking companies. Freight schedules have been upended during the pandemic for many reasons both on the shippers' side as well as the freight haulers' side. Some railfans I follow say they are seeing many trains that have been combined with those of other days as shippers struggle to meet schedules and delays accumulate.

I had a “Smart Post” FEDEX/USPS part coming from TX. Left May 11th, arrived SAT, May 23rd. How’s that for great service? Got to pay extra for that, besides :-). Getting just a little goofy out there...

My package, purchased April 29, is someplace between Jamaica, NY and Nowhere, NJ as of 5-23. Expected delivery is May 9. Package has not yet been received by USPS.

Now I know why the vendor has a 68% rating. I won't make that mistake again.

Sorry but you are mistaken for the most part.

FedEx and UPS have their own planes and trucks. The USPS has contracted trucks and the use of space on commercial airlines. FedEx and UPS don't hand over a package to the USPS until it is almost at it's destination.

Here's a copy of my latest shipments progress...

Quote:
05/23/2020 6:40 A.M. Aurora, CO, United States

Destination Scan
05/22/2020 9:49 P.M. Aurora, CO, United States Arrival Scan
05/22/2020 9:32 P.M. Commerce City, CO, United States Departure Scan
05/22/2020 12:15 A.M. Commerce City, CO, United States Your package has been delayed due to events beyond our control. We're adjusting delivery plans as quickly as possible.
05/21/2020 9:54 P.M. Commerce City, CO, United States Arrival Scan
It arrived in Colorado by UPS on 5/21. It should've went to my post office in Denver just a few miles away but instead ended up at another regional USPS hub in Aurora,Co. It could've been human error or my piece might have been thrown in with the lot going to Aurora. It only weighed 1lb. If all goes well I should get it on Wednesday. The other 2pcs in my order stayed with UPS and should be delivered Tuesday.

I would bet that the railways and trucking companies don't account for even .01% of online orders.

I ordered a pair of boots from KY Guns. It was set up on 4/18. Tracking show it zipping through to Wisconsin on 4/21. Should get it the 22nd, right? No

It got the same moving through the system. Showed up in Detroit 2 weeks later. Then disappears for another week. I finally got it a few days ago.

Meanwhile, my son custom orders a pair of Nike. They were made and shipped overseas. Arrived in shorter time than those boots.

All my stuff shipped via USPS, FedEx or UPS has arrived on time or a day early. Until you live or work in other countries, you can’t truly appreciate the service USPS provides.

I signed up for Amazon Prime. Both orders that I placed were messed up. The first one, Amazon shipped me damaged goods, I returned it. The replacement item was shipped, there was nothing in the package. Finally found a chat link and the person on the other end shipped the correct part.

Second order, one item was shipped to the regional post office who shipped it to the wrong town. Was shipped back to the regional PO and I finally received it.

All of these items were shipped through the postal service.

Have a blessed day,

Leon

My experience is that it will come early, unless it comes late, then again sometimes it comes on time unless it doesn't come at all.

The USPS is running on "fumes" now. They are basically obsolete and should probably be privatized, made much smaller by attrition or eliminated all together. At this point we are just throwing good money after bad at it and the USPS will only shrink every year going forward. If you think about it ..... between email, texting, faxing, scanning, Fedex, UPS, Amazon, Auto bill pay, on lime bill pay etc. they deliver just a bit more than junk mail these days.

That said, they DO provide jobs - not only for the Mail personal but for all the support groups that maintain trucks, planes, buildings etc. and I suppose that in itself is a good thing. They also give Dogs a reason to bark - LOL! Don't get me wrong, I like the fact that we get mail and packages delivered right to our door steps, but truly can't see how they can sustain themselves in the years to come without MAJOR influxes fo money from the Taxpayers!

I have a package that is slowly moving through the USPS system. It seems to be getting put in quarantine every place it stops. It stopped in New York May 3rd, hit Virginia on the 15th. Left There on the 20t. Today tracking says it is moving through the system to its final destination.

I was talking to my SIL, who works for the PO and she explained that with everyone ordering on line now instead of going to the store, they are swamped.

I have the worst experience with FEDEX Ground. They make the USPS look like the most efficient organization in the world, and normal FEDEX is good too.
Example: Package shipped to me last week - delivery on Sunday - adult signature required. I wait all day Sunday, no updates from them to my tracking #. After two calls around 5pm (takes two to get a live person) they tell me that "end of the day" means 8pm. 8:10 pm - two more calls - package hasn't arrived at the local terminal. When now, I ask, "by the end of the day on Tuesday" "I won't be here on Tuesday" "That's ok, we'll try everyday until Thursday". Can you give me an estimate of the delivery time: "by the end of the day" (8pm).
I know FEDEX Ground is not real FEDEX and that the people that deliver are owner/operators, but nothing changed in the world from last Thursday until Sunday that was beyond their control.
I tried to get them to hold the package until I could pick it up but they said I would have to call the shipper to have that change made.
One of the people I spoke to told me that Fedex Ground is an "economy" service and they can't provide the same level of delivery information that real FEDEX gets.

I guess wasting 2 days of my time is OK in their business model.

It varies with locality. About 15 years ago I had UPS say that I refused delivery at a particular time and place. That was interesting as I was giving a presentation 13 miles away in front of my boss and a bunch of pretty unimpeachable witnesses. They've cleaned up their act in Vegas recently, thank goodness.

Fedex have been pretty reliable for the 20+ years I've lived here. My only beef with USPS is that my Rifleman magazine has gone AWOL about three times in four years at this address. I don't think it ever went missing at the old house.

The next time you have to stop at a railroad crossing and see a train pass by, pay attention to how many of the cars are hauling semi-trailers with the UPS and FedEx logos on them, among others. It's cheaper by far for a shipper to send a semi-trailer cross country by train than to fly it or to pull it with a tractor, even if it's a double. They all use a combination of methods.

Of course I can't defend your package getting lost between Denver and Aurora - literally right next door, but when I order something that is coming from the New York/New Jersey area or from the west coast I sincerely doubt a truck pulled it all the way to Florida.

Strange. I just saw the mail truck at my box, and there were two packages there that I was expecting tomorrow. I wasn't expecting anything today, being a holiday. One of the packages was from Amazon, and I know that they have a special arrangement for Sunday/Holiday delivery, but one wasn't.

Don’t take this as an attack on USPS. I’ve (almost) always have had better service from them than either orange or brown. When hurricane irma hit here a couple of years ago, the USPS were the only ones who would even deliver. fedex and ups kept claiming “impassible roads”, the same roads USPS drove on daily at that time (we did have a lot of flooding all over south and central Florida). Very frequently, with USPS, items shipped to me or by me, would show up a day early and I guess we all got used to that. It makes sense that the influx of online ordering from the china virus would slow things down. I just wish they would update their tracking. “Somewhere in the pipeline...on its way...gonna get there eventually” just seems lazy.

Colorado Dept of Health tried to close down a major hub in Denver..All mail to CO and WYO goes thru that hub. 10,000 pieces a day.
USPS said "Bite me.. We're Fed and you have no authority over us."

Mail is still coming.

I have had odd results - some really good, some awful, with just about every means of shipping goods. Sent something priority to my wife's aunt in the Chicago area a few days ago, and priority mail got it there very quickly. Considering that even mail sent from here TO here goes to Spokane for processing now, that's amazing. It used to be next day here; now it is two or even three. I mailed some bills last Monday and they have not hit the back yet, which is unusual for these.

When I was trucking years ago, I carried some overflow US Mail. While they do have trucks on contract, there are times they use other freight companies if they need capacity. Right now, extra capacity is minimal due to essential goods (groceries, etc.) taking priority. Air freight is often done as extra space on passenger planes (and most long mail runs are done by plane), but with fewer passenger flights, there may be less capacity.

As for piggy back (trailers shipped by rail) - yes, it is cheaper by a long shot and uses a LOT less fuel, but it is SLOW. I used to load paper at a mill in Maine on a regular basis that was supposed to go by train, but the rail folks had screwed up so badly it was being taken off rail cars and put on my trailer.

Lots of variables here.

I don't doubt that you've seen them but I've yet to see even one in the 32yrs I've lived here and I'm as close to the action as one could get.

A nearby lumber company use rail to ship their prefab pieces. The Denver Car Auction frequently uses rail cars to move vehicles around. A lot of coal cars going North to a power plant. Recently saw close to fifty rail cars with military equipment and vehicles on them. They probably went to Denver PD.

Denver is a major Hub to both the orange and brown. This includes the airport as well as numerous trucking distribution places. It is common to see both of them puling two trailers and sometimes even three on the highways.

Had a notice in my mailbox last week that went out to who-knows-how-many people from the local postmaster, apologizing for the recent incidence of misdelivered mail and asking us to return any we received to the post office. Evidently they hired a moron or somebody went rogue.

as of today I have had three things I have ordered in the past four weeks get to New Jersey and sort of drop into a black hole. They go in but never come out. Plus in two of the orders NJ was much farther from the shipping point than where I live. twilight zone perhaps.

USPS is shipping more mail and packages that they do during Christmas.
Record amounts of mail.
This time of year the route I drove only had maybe 3-4 cages of mail on Saturday night/Sunday morning.
Now they carry up to 16 cages.
Postal workers have to come in on Sundays and move the cages inside the post office to make enough room in the loading area for the Monday morning mail.

Some of the routes they are considering bringing in second trucks and third drivers to try to carry all of the mail.

They are literally overwhelmed.

This is my work truck. It will carry 21 cages.
I still drive every December and fill in for the two other drivers when they want time off.
I'll be diving in June and the driver I talked to called Tuesday to gave me a heads up on what to expect.
This is normally the slowest time of the year.

Well at least I got an answer to what I perceived as mishandling by UPS on my recent shipment... A newer and bigger distribution facility.

As they transition to the new building it's not without growing pains. I had 2pcs shown out for delivery but only one pc made it. I did get it the following day. The piece that was transferred to USPS was also a day late getting to me.

It's my opinion that it had nothing to do with COVID19 but everyone else seems to using that excuse so why not. I don't know the names of the people I deal with at FedEx,UPS or the USPS but I know their faces and they know me. Overall I've been very happy with their service and except for receiving a package destroyed I can deal with anything else.

I was in business 45 years and had a few things broken but all turned out ok in the end. Those postal workers are on the move in my area and a big thumbs up.

Out of the GAZILLION of items moved around the world, the only thing you hear about is the one, buck two eighty item that took a few more days to get somewhere, or the item cost less than the shipping.
I recently placed orders with Amazon, Midway, Lee and Classic Firearms (not a gun) all arrived on or before the day
they said it would.
