I’ve always wanted to try a Japanese whisky and found this bottle at Trader Joe’s yesterday here in Vegas:



This is Nikka Coffey Grain Whisky, and it is excellent. I included my Ruger .22 with custom Nambu-style stocks, and my Japanese traditional folder called a higonokami (肥後守) to complete the theme.

Japanese whisky has been winning many awards in recent years including this bottle. Fascinating subject and here is a video on the history of Japanese whisky:


Definitely worth trying. Good stuff!

Yall know that Suntory owns Jim Beam, Knob Creek, Makers Mark etc. So I suppose you could say we’re all drinking Japanese Whiskey.

My SIL shared a bottle of 50 year old Suntory whiskey that had been given to his grandfather back in the ‘70s. Gramps never opened it!

it was some Crown Royal that was aged 45 years ...........

and the asking price in US dollars was...............

drum roll, please..........

$200,000.

Now you tell me- I did drink that bottle of Crown Royal 45 years ago.
I also shot that only box of 38 /44s I ever had.

Crown Royal is blended Canadian swill. I can’t imagine anyone getting excited about it no matter the age.

Crown was the drink of the oil patch in the 70's-early80's when the
boom was going on. Actually I like V.O. better than Crown.
Then Oklahoma said that the wholesalers must sell to Ok. outlets at the
lowest price as anywhere in the country. Well, Seagram's brands just
pulled out of the state. This was when Ok. had private clubs and what
I called liquor by the wink. I was in a steak house in OKC and ordered
a V.O. on the rocks. The owner came out and said sir we are out
of any Seagram's products and it is costing me big bucks. And so me,
always wanting to be helpful, said how much do you want as I am going
home for Thanksgiving Holiday and I will bring you back some. Keeping
this a short as possible, I hauled him a pickup load back with a tarp
tied over the load. I am sure the liquor store in Arkansas knew what
I was doing but couldn't care less, or turn down such a large order.
The steak house wanted more but before he ran out of the first load,
Ok. backed off on their stupid rule.
My only experience with bootlegging.

Crown Royal is the British-owned Canadian swill. For the Japanese-owned Canadian stuff, you have to go with Canadian Club. I like it better

As for actual Japanese whisky, they're not really making Scotch, although the better ones are malt whiskies, from malted barley, that are pot-distilled and much closer in style to Scotch than American styles.

Nikka makes a blended malt named after Masetaka Taketsuru (see the video linked by Jay above) that I really like. Quite different from Scotch malts.

My ex father in-law was in the Bataan Death March and when finally liberated, he and a friend beat up the commandant of the last camp they were in (With Louis) and he got his 7 MM Officers Baby Nambu. I already has an standard 8mm one, so I traded him for it. He wanted a new S&W model 36 and I had my gun shop then and traded him a new one for the Nambu.

Back in those days I used to commercially load 8mm Nambu for commercial sales.

Really digging those Nambu grips for the Ruger. Might have to see if I can find a pair for my MKII.

I had some Japanese whiskey last night. It's called Jim Beam.

My experience also, about 45+ years ago. It was OK.

For Blended Scotch, Royal Salute is OK and Johnny Walker Blue, but it is way over priced. I would rather drink Singleton Single Malt for about $29.00 than most blended scotches for considerably more money.

As I am a Kentucky Colonel, I can only say that there is NO substitute for the real deal - Kentucky Bourbon made the old way by Kentuckians who owe no fealty to any foreign nation.

Last night at 5:00 I savored Rebel Yell combined with just a dash of water. Right now, it's about 2 hours and 40 minutes to 5:00! I can hardly wait...

I'm a Tullamore DEW man for the most part, but if I run out I have some Maker's Mark, Buffalo Trace, and Jim Beam for backup. But I prefer Irish whiskey over bourbon.

For those wanting to drink American, here’s a handy reference regarding just the best known labels:

Owned by foreign corporations are Beam (including Maker’s Mark) by Suntory/Japan, Four Roses by Kirin/Japan, George Dickel and Bulleit by Diageo/Britain, Wild Turkey by Campari/Italy, and Angels Envy by Bacardi/Bermuda.

American-owned largely by family businesses are Brown-Forman (Jack Daniel’s, Woodford Reserve, Old Forester), Sazerac (Buffalo Trace, A. Smith Bowman, Barton 1792), Heaven Hill (Evan Williams, Elijah Craig, etc), and Luxco (Rebel Yell, Ezra Brooks).

Not a complete list. Usually Wiki can help you determine who owns and who distills (not always the same) a label. With the whiskey boom of the last decades, international investors have started buying into even small micro-distilleries.

I don't like Jack Daniel's. Woodford Reserve is pretty good. Not impressed with Old Forester. Buffalo Trace was very good for it's price until it got expensive. I don't think it's worth the price now. I'm pretty fond of the 1792. Elijah Craig is good. The Evan Williams black is my favorite el cheapo label. Rebel Yell is OK.

I consider myself a Bourbon man and have a pretty fair collection of it. Occasionally I will have a Vodka, Rye, and once in a blue moon some Cognac or aged Rum. I have tried Japanese Whisky about half a dozen times over the last decade (don't remember the brands) and while I thought it was OK, I don't remember thinking to myself, "hey I've got to get a bottle of this stuff".

But like anything else it's a taste that is developed. If I lived in Japan and could only get a hold of Japanese Whisky, I'd more than likely get use to it or find one that I really liked. To me it's just missing something.

I like trying different brands of Bourbon and there are so many made right here in the USA I have little desire to look for foreign libations. That - coupled with my desire to support OUR Country's businesses first - I can honestly say I am more than happy with American Bourbon Whisky. It's one of the few things I feel we are still the worlds leader in manufacturing.
