Default PGH PA war memorial vandalized

Anyone familiar with Pittsburgh, PA probably knows the "Doughboy Memorial" at the intersection of Butler Street and Penn Avenue greeting people to the Lawrenceville neighborhood of Pittsburgh, PA. It's a statue of a Doughboy of WWI. At the bottom of it are plaques with the names of all the local people who served in WWI, then they added WWII locals. (My wife's father and uncle are on it.) This morning all were greeted with it vandalized with red paint; some of it looked like a circle with a hammer in it, then they/he/she just dumped the paint on it. Really a (insert bad word here) disgraceful act of vandalism on an otherwise beautiful day. All the traffic lights at this intersection are new, so they have the cameras on them. I just hope the pictures show a little better view than the bank robber/Big Foot type blurry pictures. I'm going to try to post the link to the Pittsburgh Tribune Review Newspaper article. If it doesn't work and yinz care to read about it, you can just type in the paper's website. God Bless America.

I am sorry to be dense, but what happened on June 19, 1986? I just googled and did not find anything noteworthy. It would seem that would be an important clue to finding the miscreants.

I would love to take them to Afghanistan, give them an M4, and take them to the heart of the Taliban territory and let them see what war is really like. They wouldn’t last an hour which is fine by me.

I just read that in Newsweek. “The phrase used in the graffiti appears to reference a battle that took place between the People's Guerrilla Army and the Peruvian state on the same date.

That date is a day the Peruvian government slaughtered 300 prisoners of war. What the hell does that have anything to do with a war memorial in Lawrenceville?

This statement was in the Comments section. I have to agree with the 2nd sentence. This part of town was changed from mills and factories to foreclosures in the '80s to drunks & junkies to rebuild and row houses selling for 6 digits, $2000/month townhomes, minimum, and a whole ton of man-bun-wearing super liberals and the like...you get the picture. It could've been anyone; but not a lifelong area resident. Somebody knows who did it. That pic of a partial footprint could be a man OR woman; many women wear those boots along with their Daisy-Dukes and tattoos. It's Halloween every day! God Bless you vets, and those of you who lost friends & family to war.

I am saddened by the news but not surprised. People have no respect for themselves let alone others. It reminds me of the news of teenagers going through cemeteries knocking over head stones. Too bad. These people may change over time. I never defaced or damaged anything. After 62 years, I respect people and things more than when I was young. It is one of the reasons I collect older Smiths. It connects me to those older days and times. The statues and plaques referenced in the OP's post also give me the opportunity to connect to the past and people named. When I was practicing law, I traveled throughout Ohio. I made it a point to always look at all the statues and plaques on the courthouse grounds. I tried to honor all the men and women that served by reading all their names on the statues and plaques. Perhaps I picked this up while in high school working as a caretaker of a cemetery. While cutting grass, I got to know the head stones and names of the deceased. I did my best to keep the graves as neat as I could. It's the least I could do for the deceased. As on head stone read: "As you are now, so once was I. As I am now, so you shall be. Prepare for death and follow me."

Makes me sick. This is what happens when people become complacent about their choices of politicians. I hate to say it, but the wolf is at our door as we speak.

It is certainly disgraceful behavior but you know what? The folks listed on the memorial, and all those they represent, have proudly lived their lives out in the open which is there for all to see. Not sneaking around at night throwing paint on that which they could never defeat in person.
Paint will wash off, cowardliness won’t.

Isn't this sufficient reason to bring back public floggings?

Update:
FBI investigating vandalism of Pittsburgh war memorial | TribLIVE.com

Well, now the Feds are involved. This is definitely good news! I hope somebody's caught. In this day & age where cameras are literally everywhere, there has GOT to be something somewhere that can ID the perp(s).
steveno, that was my first thought exactly. And it seems almost any time I've gone past there somebody is awaiting a bus. It is kinda dead down there in the early morning hours, especially on a Sunday night before a holiday and with the bars closed. The FBI knows a lot more than we do, so I just hope they get whoever did it. This is one of the busiest streets coming into the city from the East.

Extremely inexcusable. No free speech rational can justify this. Happily, from the pictures it appears all the paint and such will be cleaned completely off the memorial. Afterward, would suggest that some sort of protective coating be applied to prevent any permanent damage from any further vandalism. Sincerely. bruce.

I see this kind of ---- as a failure of our education system.

Sadly, Most of our educators see it as a success.

Get involved with your kids and grandkids school, We need to get a handle on this for the futures sake.
