Default BUG out bags and C19

Question to the forum: Has C19 changed how and what is in your BUG out bags (BoB)? What got me to thinking about the question is that just about no where we went were interested in cash - most had signs indicating - credit card only, scan your own, etc....

My BoB always included cash - "Cash is King" as my dear departed friend would always say.... I'm not sure it ever included toilet paper though!!

So, the question: Has C19 changed at all the complexion/content of your BoB? For me, the jury is still out: I'm not sure it has or not so thought I'd get your take.

I have no Bug Out Bag. I'm surrounded by two and a half million people. All arteries will be clogged.

We'll stay home and eat re-gifted fruitcakes.

I answer every B.O.B. question with the same answer. I am to old, to fat, and to tired to but out, so I'm bugging in.

Now my question, why in the world would anyone want to bug out, if all the credit card processing equipment are still working?

When the s.h.t.f. cash will always be KING.

A bug out bag isn't just for the collapse of society or zombies. How about the folks who live in hurricane territory? Sounds like a good idea to me.

Well, of course then, within the context and spirit of the question, I might as well correct you...…… that should be:

"Too old", "Too fat", and, "Too tired"....

Leave it to THIS forum, to go all spiritual and Dr. Phil!

I think I'm in the same boat as you, plus I have some older relatives nearby to look out for.

A big question would be where would I bug out to?

If the S H T F does happen cash may be of some worth. Gold and silver, plus other barter items will be king.

Don’t need a BOB.
I’ll go out on the balcony and fire two shots from my double barrel.

1) The real question is: In a cash free or cashless emergency what is the money solution? Your EDC (every day carry) will contain your wallet or money clip. In that will be your credit or debit card.

1b) What if I don't use credit cards or debit cards? Most grocery stores have a selection of gift cards, in that area are Visa and Master Card gift cards, they are a type of debit card. Buy a number of $50 cards and put them away for a rainy day!

2) My options of "bugging out" have changed drastically in the last 10 years! I still think being somewhere else is a viable option in some emergencies. The number one place to run to was dad's farm in the hills! But dad died, the farm is gone, and I won't be counting on the charity of others! I have 3 or 4 other options to call on if my home will become unsafe. To that end there are canvas bags loaded with food and equipment for two weeks of unsupported camping that can be in the car in 10 minutes, there is far bigger and more comfortable equipment available but it takes longer.

Remember Sun Tzu said: No plan of battle, survives contact with the enemy!

Always have a plan "B", "C", "D" and "E"

Hmmm. It's always a good idea to be prepared for anything that life throws at you. If you're anything like me, you hate surprises except on your birthday. And at my age, I don't like 'em even then.

That being said, yes, I have an old wooden dynamite box in the back seat of my truck that includes some canned goods, skillet, coffee pot, camp axe and several other items. Along with that, I have a back pack there that has enough essentials to take care of me and Ms. Judy for a few days just in case we have to take off for a brief period of time...but that's just us. Your mileage may vary.

However, where I happen to live, barring any unforeseen emergency, we'll probably be bugging in. We've got a big garden, fruit trees, chickens, and just about everything else you normally find on a self-sustaining farm.

Like Hank Williams, Jr. once said, "I can skin a buck, can run a trotline, and a country boy can survive."

where I live the BOB is a winter time bag. I carry 2 wool blankets. a couple of survival candles. a tin cup to melt snow to drink, jerky chocolate, protein bars, wool cap extra gloves or mitten, wool socks. My 45 Acp. summer BOB is water, bug spray, matches hand ax, tarp 550 cord. good utility knife, first aid kit. boone hat, my 45 acp and 2 reloads. road flares, jerky proton bars. In both cases the stuff is to get me home. I am not fighting a war. or the collapse of the country as we know it. I didn't add a water filter pen. some fishing supplies. a signal mirror and whisle.

I'll just stay home and watch to see which neighbors bug out. If I get to needing something I'll see what they left behind.

I'd rather weather out any SHTF scenario at home. Same goes for hurricanes. I'm 4.02 miles from the coast as the crow flies, and last year Dorian had my attention.

If it had hit my area and we were expecting long power outages, I'd have left after it passed thru, then came back when the power was back on.

Got a generator, and had multi cans of gas, but it's not a whole house set up.

Yep KFK, this is what I was going for. Mrs. Mod34 and I were discussing it the other day over coffee - what if a fire hit, flood coming, etc. What would we grab and do we change what's in our
"Bag"? The discussion of cash and some/most places not taking it during C19, got us to thinking, so it was off to the forum I went.

I have done a lot of solo boating for years around the gigantic Lake Powell.
Thousands of box-end canyons meant I went days or weeks without seeing anyone.

In boating, you must always be ready for fire and explosions. I had my BOB hanging on the canopy, ready to grab and dive off the boat. I slept very well at night knowing I was prepared as possible for the unknown.

The Absolute Requirement to begin with was identifying what emergency you were preparing for. BOB's have very different contents depending on how long and what's going on.

Flood, Tornado, Fire, Earthquake, Civil Unrest, and now Plaque happens almost every year.
Tsunami, Asteroid, Terrorist, Marital Law, or Nuclear. May never happen to you.

Each of these will have different needs. Transportation is a key question to address before any planning. Transportation will determine the weight and items you can carry. Getting around can become impossible.

Length of time and number of people is essential to specify when preparing. I use the 3 day, 3 week, or never coming back criteria.
I used the 1 person, 2 person and animal, 10 people or more categories for planning.

I also break down how long I have to Bug Out. 1 second, 1 minute, 10 minutes, or hours. If I have 10 minutes, I have time to get heavy, big items to transportation.

The probability of needing a BOB is tiny. But if your family needs it and you haven't done even the minimal prep; you will never forgive yourself.

I've enjoyed the mental exercise of planning. There's a lot of variables. I have several bags ready in order of priority. I can grab the BOB or I can include the major medical, extended, trade, or defense bag as well. It all depends.....

Trade Items are a hoot to plan for.

Survival kit contents check. In them you'll find: one forty-five caliber automatic; two boxes of ammunition; four days' concentrated emergency rations; one drug issue containing antibiotics, morphine, vitamin pills, pep pills, sleeping pills, tranquilizer pills; one miniature combination Russian phrase book and Bible; one hundred dollars in rubles; one hundred dollars in gold; nine packs of chewing gum; one issue of prophylactics; three lipsticks; three pair of nylon stockings. Shoot, a fella' could have a pretty good weekend in Vegas with all that stuff.

I'm not going anywhere. All my food, guns, ammo, and clothing is at my home. People I trust live around me. With my location I have no concern about flooding or wildfire. A tornado may take my home but I have a safe room top see me through that event.

If civil unrest is an issue, many of my neighbors are as well armed as I am.

My big issue is getting back home if I'm away.

Never forget your proof of citizenship. You might end up bugging out farther than you expected, or even climbing walls to leave or come back.

I used to sail offshore, singlehanded. I had what was called an "abandon ship bag." Basic necessities such as non-perishable food and food replacement equipment such as fishing gear. Water & water replenishment equipment such as rain collection sheets and hand-operated reverse osmosis watermaker. Signaling devices for day & night including hand-held marine VHF radio, waterproof flashlights, flares & discarded CDs/DVDs.

The one thing always went into that bag pre-departure was my passport. Needed when floating around in international waters in a liferaft, hoping to get rescued. Could even affect your first landfall: good ole' USA or some third world country with third world medical facilities.

In response to the original post, work-from-home confirmed that with this pandemic, it's viable and preferable to stay home. If we had to bug out for other reasons, we'll include hand sanitizer & face masks in the bug out bag.

I don't worry about the extremes, I travel a lot for work and just have basic medical supplies (kit), blanket, fire starting supplies, pocket knife, gauze/emergency medical kit, keep a little bit of bottled water in vehicle and some energy bars.

Don't judge anyone for doing what they feel comfortable with; I just keep a backpack in the family vehicle or work vehicle to be prepared. Flash light some small tools.

NOW, the one thing I do carry and have had occasion to use, while camping...is GasX and peptobismal. Let me tell you if your camping in the middle of nowhere and need those items, life is not going to be fun for a while.

To answer the OP. No. Already have hand sanitizer and bandanas in BOB
For the most part, I’m hunkering down. Primary reason to send me down the road has not changed.
Some of their names: Donna, Camille, Andrew, Charlie, Wilma, Irma, and company.
