Social Security Scam is back
I've had three robocalls in the last two days, in the nature of "This is the Social Security Office. There has been suspicious illegal activity on your account and unless you contact us immediately your account will be suspended. Please dial 1 to speak with a representative." When I hit 1, some guy with a heavy Indian accent answers and starts asking for personal information.
I've had such scam calls in the past, but it's been a long time. Looks like it's starting up again.

DWalt, thanks for the heads-up! Last year, my gal phoned me near tears from her job site garage after opening her phone and finding this msge. I calmed her down, explaining it was phony, to ignore it and erase it from VoiceMail. But how many other foreign-born citizens (as she is) do not have someone to explain this to them? This bothers me.

I would not have given them the satisfaction of pressing 1.
I came home to a message saying my electricity was going to be cut off in 30 minutes because of default. Given the message was left at 0930 and the lights still work, I guess they couldn't find the right wire to cut.

My son got a call one time from someone claiming to be a psychic. He told her that if she was a real psychic, she would have known he didn't want to talk to her...and then he hung up...

I'm not bothered with spam robo calls because I never answer the phone if it doesn't have a caller ID I know. I let the answering machine do the message taking.

Been approached by those claiming to have the sight and they've all answered my question correctly.
Guess what I'm going to tell you to do next.

Many years ago a big Calif. Psychics hotline went broke. I wonder why they couldn't predict that?

It's been awhile since I got that call from Social security and it was rather amusing. The call was from "Officer Mike Hammer" informing me my account had been breached. I just burst out laughing and told the person anyone old enough to collect Social security is old enough to know who Mike Hammer is and hung up.

After several calls, I decided to call back and play with them. I actually got to talk to a human ( sounded like a cross between a Punjab and a Somali ). After listening to the spiel for a bit, I asked his name, office location, and badge number---"CLICK".

When my son was a teen and we would get solicitation calls on the home phone, he would have my wife give him the phone and he would go into a heavy foreign accent and play with these folks for several minutes before laughing and hanging up.

Scammers don't stop until they are arrested, tried, and jailed. Sadly, I think it is very, very rare that they ever get caught.

Amen to this.
Why in Gods name with today’s technology, do people answer their phone, if they don’t know who is calling.
I absolutely never do, and my scam calls are zero.

I still wonder about the scammers who make a call that my Caller ID shows as coming from me with my own phone number. I've been talking to myself for years and I never needed a phone to do it.
One time I answered the phone because it looked like it was coming from someone I did business with. When I picked up, I got some kind of verbal tapdancing about how they were connected to who I dealt with, but would never affirmatively say that the call was from the entity I thought had called. My attitude now is if you have to use some kind of deception to get me to answer the phone, I don't want to talk to you or do business with you.

Same here. The phone rings, I glance at it. Not in my contact list? Not getting answered.
I did have the Social Security scammers leave me a voicemail, but I'm not quite dumb enough to fall for that.

I also always use an answering machine, and have for many years. I picked up on the call just to see who would answer.

df06, my elderly mom just can't NOT answer the phone, no matter what the caller ID says. It will come up unknown caller or just blank and even though I tell her not to answer it she says, " I just want to see who it is." Then she gets mad when it's a robocall or a telemarketer and slams the phone down. When I am visiting her it drives me up the wall.

Ma-in-law#1 was like that. We're all eating dinner at our house and the phone rings. I ignore it. Ma in law acts like there are ants in her pants. "The phone's ringing!"
Me: "Yeah, ghastly noise disturbing our nice dinner. Let me fix it". I walk to the phone, glance at the blank caller ID, pick it up, and drop it.
She was aghast. Mission accomplished.

Interesting. My mom is 92. She used to have the same issue, but now is able to resist answering unknown numbers. It took a while.

I do this when I get a call I think is going to be a scam or sales pitch. I answer the phone, "Ehhh?". When they say whatever it is they want to say, I reply, "Que?". Usually they hang up at that point, but once in a while, they say, "Is there anyone there who speaks Engish?". I say back, "Oh no, I'm sorry, no one here speaks English!". Usually, at that point, I get cussed out and hung up on, but a couple of times the caller got very angry and told me, "Don't be a wise *** and waste my time". "Same thing back to you, moron!".

df06, Mom will be 92 in Nov and no matter what we say she is just going to answer that phone. No amount of "Don't answer it!' works. Hey, her house, her rules. *s*

Why Older People MUST Answer the Phone.
I think a lot of the reason older people HAVE to answer the phone is based upon their childhood. Back in the 1940's and 1950's, the ONLY reason phone calls were made was a family emergency - sickness, accidents, child birth, death, etc. It was ingrained in them that the phone call was an alert about some illness/tragedy. That ringing phone was just like a fire alarm bell alerting to disaster and required a response. That sense of urgency/tragedy has never left the person in all these years.

I've had a couple of those calls, and I just hang up and add the # to my blocked calls.
