Just heard this song. "City of New Orleans"
Listening to Sirus XM
One of those songs that bring you back to a specific place and time. I took a ride on Amtrack from Florida to Washington DC to see my Sister who lived outside the city. Met a girl on the train had a great time , passing those nameless towns, folks eating the food they brought in folded cloth napkins, Club car, the song is so good!
I would love to take the train trip North like the Rocky Mts or something,
Originally by Steve Goodman made famous by Arlo Guthrie,

The other Chi Town - Big Easy train was the Panama Limited.
Any songs about it?
Probably too hard to rhythm?

Great song. Arlo put something into it that no one else could.
Poetry put to music
“Riding on the City of New Orleans
Illinois Central Monday morning rail
Fifteen cars and fifteen restless riders
Three conductors and twenty-five sacks of mail
All along the southbound odyssey
The train pulls out at Kankakee
Rolls along past houses, farms and fields
Passin' trains that have no names
Freight yards full of old black men
And the graveyards of the rusted automobiles.........”

That song always reminds me of the train trips I had as a kid. The Union Pacific "City of Los Angeles" or "City of Los Vegas" The dome cars, the fancy dining cars with great food, the club cars where the gentlemen could have a cigar & a cocktail. Leisure travel at its finest. (Except if you happened to be riding on New Years Eve with a bunch of Marines! )
The Union Pacific station in Vegas was at the end of Fremont St., a VERY impressive sight at night for a seven year old in the 50's.

It's been my firm opinion that Willie rules with this song, which has been a long time favorite of mine.
For those interested, hear it here:

My fondest memory from childhood was a train trip out west. My Father, Mother and I left our small Ozarks town of under 300 folks on the Frisco.
Remember pulling a long grade near Koskanong Mo. that gave doubts if the train could climb it. The Butcher's boy made his way up the aisle selling his sandwiches and cokes. Got to KC sometime in the night and transferred to the Sante Fe El Capatain to Los Angeles.
What an experience for a 10 year old county boy.
I saw America.
Had one partial memory of arriving in LA at Union Station and walking through a beautiful tunnel. Didn't connect until I looked at images of Union Station online about a month ago..
I will always believe the day the last regular passenger train ran was both a sad day and a mistake for our country.
There is just something about railroads that touches the soul.

Let’s switch to worse train rides.
One night I rode the slow roll special from Ogden to Cheyenne.
Long night!

Always liked that tune performed by Arlo, brought back my memories of travelling by train as a child. We moved everything we owned on the train a couple of times. Portland Ore. to San Diego, San Diego to Iowa, Iowa to Spokane. It was always an adventure and allowed freedom of movement unlike any other method of travelling I had experienced. Oddly before the Covid thing I was thinking about taking the train down to New Orleans by myself. New Orleans is about the only big city I have any interest in revisiting, I think its the perfect combination of culture, people and food.

Great song. Great period in time. While everyone posts their favorite version. Here's my favorite with Randy Scruggs and John Prine (God rest his soul).

Steve Goodman wrote and rewrote "Standing In The Rain" for David Alan Coe. Another good song written partially about a train.

My all time favorite song. I was and still am an early riser. Back when I couldn’t tell time. I’d wake up go to the living room turn on the tv. And the test pattern would be on with no sound. Then after a while they’d play some music. Every morning the first song was Arlo singing City of New Orleans. Then the Star Spangled Banner. A great way to start the day!

I saw both live Steve and Arlo singing that song.
Sadly Steve Goodman passed away much too young.

Best version ever by Willie. I pull it out every once in awhile and give it a listen. I also like Gordon Lightfoot's Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald.

The town I grew up in is on the Illinois Central and the City of New Orleans went through every night. I came within a few inches of getting hit by it one night, but that is another story.
Every time I hear the song, I think of playing ball in the city park and hearing the train roar by. It was usually running 90 or above when it went past the West side of my little town.

I should have mentioned, the sleeper accomodations included unlimited menu choices in the dining car at meal times. He still talks about the delicious Cajun omelette breakfast special, that was so good he went to the kitchen and thanked the Chef.

A while back I rode from Indianapolis to Chicago, then Chicago to Albquerque.
Just a regular seat. Dont ever do that!
Uncomfortable tedious event.
Felt like I was on a prison train.
Can I appeal my sentence?
No! Your not very appealing.

Great song! Always loved it.
The true hero of this song. No matter who sings it.

I am another who loves the song City of New Orleans, Guthrie and Nelson versions are favorites but I am partial to the Arlo Guthrie one.

RIP (too young) Steve Goodman. To watch him sing that iconic song that he wrote is still my favorite. If you Google Steve Goodman songs, you'll be amazed at the songs he wrote and performed in his short life. He was also a great acoustical guitar player, and played with John Prine on several occasions.

Growing up in Tuscola IL where the Illinois Central ran North & South, The B&O ran East & West and the Chicago & Eastern Illinois RR (C&EI) blocked the streets.
The City of New Orleans came through everyday between 80 & 90 MPH. Screaming fast and blowing its horn. Every time I hear that song, I think of my home town.
Steve Goodman wrote a number of other wonderful songs including the Cub's fans anthem '''Go Cubs Go''' History: The Story Behind the Chicago Cubs Song | Time

That's a great song.....
...I wish Arlo had more like that one.
Alice's Restaurant is entertaining but I don't consider it to be 'music'.

@ Crazyphil "The Wreck Of Old 97 is about a true story that really happened about 100 miles from me. I have always liked taht one two. Someone else mentioned Hank Snow's Golden Rocket but I also like his "Hobo Bill's last Ride". He also did one called Canadian Pacific.

The Father of Country Music is Jimmie Rodgers.
Jimmie had been a Train Brakeman and gave us numerous Train Songs including Hobo Bill.
Jimmie was extremely popular and had many fans and young performers who idolized him
One of those folks was a Canadian Lad named Hank Snow.

Since we're in the "train songs".
One of my old favorites.

Okay okay, y'all like them cross-country trains, but don't forget those cross-town trains that some here are more used to.
My cousins and I (far right, 15 months old) waiting for the "B" train in Brooklyn.

Used to ride Amtrak from Princeton, NJ to Union Station in DC. Takes you thru the worst parts of every city and town in between. Not much fun and NO romance.
