It's a great Sabbath Day this morning. No fireworks going off, and the MBH is doing breakfast. The tomatoes are looking better after I put nets up to keep the birds out. They really did a number on them last week, but several are turning into great sandwich material.

Something in the kitchen sure smells good, reminds me of childhood days. They don't call them Precious Memories for nothing.

My dad grew the best tomatoes in his backyard garden...and to this day, tomato sandwiches are one of my favorite summertime treats. Thanks for the reminder...Precious Memories indeed!

a fresh yard grown tomato over the stuff they call tomatoes in the stores, these days.

I hate it when I have to use store bought maters.... no aroma and no flavor !!
Pretty bad when you have to kneel down to a Roma, for some color and a little flavor.

Saturday both the wife and myself were doing yardwork. She in her garden and me in my Kubota tractor bush hogging the grass. Both of us too tired to do much of anything. So split a package of beef hot dogs, some Bush's baked beans,relish and saurkraut on bread. Sunday started out nice.But the heavens opened up and so much for finishing off the grass. Had fresh string beans from our garden.Frank

The only harvest from the condo patio garden so far are fresh flowers, herbs, and snow pea pods for stir-fry.

I have been dreaming of climbing the huge pear tree at the original farm house and eating my fill of fresh, tree ripened yellow pears! I would drop a few down to the dog, but he preferred the Concord grapes growing 10 feet away! The summer between 5th and 6th grade, I could have sworn I was King of the World!

It was funny here yesterday, the firework’s army did not redeploy until about noon—I suspect sleeping off the previous nights (mornings!) battles.

They never seemed to pull the pickets in and get going in earnest, rather just skirmished a bit, but they were at it again until almost midnight last night.

Possum—The other white meat!

Our townhouse (patio home) features a private patio of about 650 sq. ft. I use a dozen 20" self-watering planters to grow tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, zucchini squash, romaine lettuce, bunching onions, and carrots. When everything starts coming to harvest time there is far more than two of us can eat, so we regularly share with the neighbors.

Last year things were a little slow. Two tomato plants only delivered about 50 tomatoes, 4 bell pepper plants only produced about 40 peppers, 6 cucumber vines provided about 75 cucumbers, 6 zucchini plants only produced about 70 zucchinis. Romaine or leaf lettuce, once established, will provide daily harvest just by pulling off the leaves needed for a salad or sandwiches. Lots of good eating with relatively little effort.

End of the season, the planters are stacked by the fence and covered with a tarp. In the spring I add some composted manure, then plant my seedlings. Top off the water reservoirs every couple of days, spray the plants with a hose on the really hot days, sprinkle on a dose of Miracle-Gro every couple of weeks.

My little hobby garden works pretty well for us.

My patio is 19'x19'=361 sq. ft. and a little over half is concrete and stair case. The area that is "soil" is clay mixed with rocks and almost NO sunlight. I have been building the soil since our first spring, but the only good production is from "Container" plantings. Maybe I should have taken up mushroom farming!

Ivan you may be right. Stack some oak logs and inject some shiitake spoor into them with a seeper hose on the pile and you should get some.

During the holiday festivities a young man (27) drove his corvette over the median into a copse of trees a few blocks from here. Witnesses say that he was going over 100 mph. The car was ripped in half and the 23 year old female passenger was ejected and killed instantly. The driver was still unconscious last that I heard and likely brain damaged. I pray for all involved. Caution your young folks to drive careful, I hate to see such needless waste and burdens on families. Be safe.

I grew up with tomato "fritters" ...sweet pancake batter, then just butter salt and pepper...a cold glass of milk to go with....Oh yeah !!
