Default My input to sports teams on name change

With the nut jobs running amuck, the Washington Redskins won't be the only sports team facing a backlash. Sooner or later they are coming after you. Teams with Native American names could be in trouble. Braves, Indians and certainly the Chiefs because a chief is the supreme authority over his people…’The Man’.

With more Americans than ever becoming fat, teams calling themselves Giants need to reconsider. The name is insensitive and derogatory to those who are ‘victims’ of obesity.

You fans in New England, the name Patriots is not acceptable. Patriots love their country, the constitution and stand up for the flag. I’m surprised they haven’t come for you already.

The outcry and protests over actual and alleged abuses by some in law enforcement must make you Texas Rangers uneasy. Who wants to read that the Rangers beat the Yankees.

Pirates, Raiders, Buccaneers and Vikings, take heed. These were cruel and violent people who invaded, plundered and killed. Not a shining example for our children. You Indianapolis Colts have a problem too. The name Colt connotes guns. We definitely don’t want our children exposed to that.

Angels, Saints and Padres, you guys might want to seek new names. Instances of abuse by church clergy make these names questionable. Also, the nut jobs abhor anything religion.

Chicago White Sox, your name is self-explanatory. The name has got to go boys. Cincinnati Reds and Boston Red Sox, you guys are exempt.

You folks living in Oregon might want to consider changing the name of the Oregon State women’s team to something other than “the Beavers”, especially when you play Southern California. Do we really want the Trojans sticking it to the Beavers?

I am also have trouble digesting what may be happening here. I can see "Redskins" being changed because it is a slur, but "Chiefs", "Indians" and "Braves" certainly are not.

I can't see any reason to change "Indians" unless they are also going to change "Cowboys", but it depends on which side of the political divide you are are on if the name Syracuse "Orangemen" is insulting or not!

Maybe all sports will be renamed after flowers? The New England pansies, The Baltimore Petunias? Tampa Bay Peonies?

Reds ? You mean like the followers of Karl ?
The Bengals ? Tigers aren't native to America.
The Jets ? You mean as in West Side Story ?
The Blackhawks ? No, they'll be wrangling over whether it refers to the Indian chief, the bird-or the comic book.

That's nothing! You go into a restaurant nowadays and tell the maitre d' that you have reservations and are promptly corrected, with him replying, "I'm sorry. We don't use that word here in order not to offend our native American clientele."

You apologize and then proceed to ask, "How many more minutes..." and are interrupted with him saying, "We don't use that word either for the same reason."

You gotta love these crazy times. I mean the idiotic things these people are coming up with is free comedy relief, if you ask me.

Actually, I always wondered why that had not raised the ire of the Catholic Irish and maybe resulted in a little bomb or two by the US branch of the IRA. The Irish tend to be touchy about such things ...

Default Redskins

The "Redskin" name for a certain variety of potatoes is doomed. Good riddance. It's such an insensitive name which has always offended me.

Turq I'm not directing this at you, personally, but I'm so tired of people being offended by everything.

I'm half Indian or Native American whatever the PC term is. I'm not offended. Why would I? They are celebrating the warrior mentality.

Here's a European (Belgian) Football club insignia:

Should they drop their insignia, too?

How about this B-1 Lancer squadron:

Lafayette Escadrille

Is that offensive? If so, who, exactly, is being offended?

All the non thinkers wanting name changes are going to wipe out the legacy and history of positive note.
Is the naming of a city of a Native American bad? What’s bad about Peoria or Tiskilwa? Absolutely nothing.
If these children get their way probably half of all names in Illinois would be changed.
What a bunch of fools.

I have a relative who is Indian and has been protesting celebrations of the Spanish heritage, and statues that have been going on in New Mexico for generations. I had seen her on the local news crying about the celebration in Santa Fe, The Entrada, during the Fiestas de Santa Fe. It's basically, Diego de Vargas Bloodless reconquest of NM.

I asked her if she was so offended by what the Spanish did centuries ago, why she didn't change her name - it's a Spanish name and surname. I then asked her why she took the surname of Cortéz, named after Conquistador Hernán Cortéz, who pretty much destroyed the Aztecs, when she married. I got no response other than a glaring look. I guess she's not that serious...

Default Irrational Mob Action

The cancelling corps will run into problems sooner or later. We have big cities, states, rivers, etc., named after leaders they deem racist. The latest lunacy is the abolition of terms like "master" that connote racial superiority. Our local realtor organization is banning the use of the term "master bedroom", substituting "principle bedroom". You have to be a card carrying member of the grievance mongering organization to see offense in a bedroom name. I'm waiting for some dim bulb to realize we name automobile brake hydraulic cylinders politically incorrectly. We must all be woke and not talk about master and slave cylinders.

That's already happened. The Washington Wizards in the NBA used to be the Baltimore/Capital/Washington Bullets. Somebody thought that was too violent or something like that, so they ended up changing the team's name.

To honor the prestigious Government, why not change the Washington DC football team to the Washington Senators! (Tongue in cheek.)

When the Colt .45s became the Astros and the origins of other Houston sports team names - Houston Chronicle

"On Dec. 1, 1964 the Houston Colt .45s officially changed the name of the team to the Houston Astros, a move that signaled a step into the future for the franchise, the city of Houston and a fundamental change in how baseball would be played.

The name change, after just three seasons, coincided with the team’s move into the Astrodome the next spring. The Colt .45s branding, which many of us still very much champion (those hats and logo are still off the chain), was a relic of old Texas and old Houston."

Well well now.

Just an observation here:

If you were the owner of a sports franchise, and you decided to change its name, no matter the reason, shouldn't you be allowed to do so? To me, this concept is part of free enterprise.

And how would you react to those who criticized you for it?

I think most of us would tell 'em to take a hike. You want a franchise named the way you want? Start one yourself, buddy.

Instead of name changes, let's just cancel them all.

Cancel the NFL.
Cancel MLB.
Cancel the NBA.
Cancel Nike while we're at it.

Over hyped, over paid professional entertainers.

Stick with college sports and go back to the idea of real, honest to goodness student athletes.

Just a thought.

I suppose the strong willed weak minded fools would have a point if a team was named the
Blood thirsty savages,
Lynchers,
Scalp hackers,
Sideways 9mm’s
Etc.

But they have found offensive with
Indians, let’s wipe that word into oblivion so no one remembers,
Braves, being brave is wrong,
Blackhawks, the name of a nation and an army company. Again, erase so no one can honor them.

Nike, the NBA and the NFL are already canceled in Sheepdawg's doghouse. MLB is still pretty neutral, I can't see anyone being upset at the word Cardinals.

Here's a European (Belgian) Football club insignia:

Should they drop their insignia, too?

How about this B-1 Lancer squadron:

Lafayette Escadrille

Is that offensive? If so, who, exactly, is being offended?
No problem I realized my post wouldn't be well received. And yes some of this stuff is ridiculous and goes way overboard. But not all.

I don't think there is anything particularly offensive about your logo examples ( except for the swastika on the Lafayette Escadrille. Which after googling it, I realized it was used for good luck and BEFORE the Nazi's adapted it).

Now my examples on the other hand are ridiculous caricatures of Native Americans. Again speaking as a non- Native American I don't have any problems with the names Cleveland Indians, or Atlanta Braves, but their logo's are.... no other way to put it stereotypical racist garbage and need to go. I would like to see anybody defend this Cleveland Indians "chief Wahoo" logo.

Perhaps each unique instance of what is offensive and what isn't needs to be looked at and judged on the merits...and not paint everything with such a broad brush. And that goes both ways.

What? What could you possibly say about Packers that would get you smacked, Caj? i don't remember any tribes called that.

By the way, I've always thought Green Bay should have an NHL franchise and give it the same name as the NFL one. You know, for consistency.

That way, they could have the football Packers and the hockey Packers.

Maybe even call all their sports teams the Packers -- baseball Packers, basketball Packers, soccer Packers, and whatnot.

Who could ever be offended by that name? Seems like a surefire winner to me.

Hmmm.......My Pontiac Chieftan has a master, and a slave cylinder.
A lot of the snowflakes would lose their minds if they took a close look at the hood ornament.
And, what about the Jeep Comanche, and The Chrysler New Yorker Navajo?
Guess those Detroit motor moguls were not woke when they used those insensitive names.
Oops, almost forgot my fave! The Pontiac Star Chief.
Best,

And please lets not forget the other ridiculousness in the news related to sports teams: those that actually own the teams are now being shamed for calling themselves, "owners". Sports talk radio "personalities" are being hounded into not calling them "owners" any more. Not exactly sure what you call someone who owns something if not an "owner", but what do I know. I guess Mrs. Mod34 and I are no longer allowed to consider ourselves home-owners. We have put 25 alternative naming conventions in a hat to draw from - I'll let you know what we come up with!

HINT: Please don't hold your breath!

I have not watched a pro sports game on TV or in person in 5 years, I've not missed it and it actually allows me to spend time doing other, more important things. I have no intention of ever spending a dime or one second on people who don't respect this country or respect my patronage that used to help make them rich.

I'll defend the Chief Wahoo logo and I'm not a baseball fan. Isn't the Ohio area full of Native Heritage - why else would they choose the name Indians? Aren't most sports logos are caricatures? I don't think Chief Wahoo is racist - but then, I'm not looking to be offended. I think it's funny!

Why don't we ask Indians aka Native Americans if they are offended? Wouldn't they know? Yeah, there's a vocal minority - a minority, but I'll bet most don't care. I'll bet other people who are offended aren't Native. They are offended by proxy.

We live in an age of sensitivity and feelings. But the world is a comedy to those that think; a tragedy to those that feel.

Again, my comment/observation is not directed at you, personally, Turq.

No. Shame on you. You’re letting your privilege show. By calling yourself a “homeowner” your implying you actually worked to pay for your home using your own effort.

You’re not an “owner.” You’re just a privileged custodian of some community property you seem to think is yours.

That seems to be the current talking point some groups are using anyway.

I appreciate your response.

I am a huge baseball fan and am not offended by the Indians name at all.

"Aren't most sports logos are caricatures?"

That is not a standard we use as to what is right and what is wrong.

"but I'll bet most don't care"

I would take that bet. Native Americans have been protesting that logo for decades. A few may not care, but most...

"But the world is a comedy to those that think; a tragedy to those that feel."

I like to think....that we can do both. I "think" the Chief Wahoo logo at one time probably was "funny" (to some). But as a society we are evolving in many ways, some good and some not so good. Now I "feel" that most think how we treated the American Indians was a "tragedy". This dumb caricature, which serves no useful purpose at all, and is easily replaceable, is just a reminder of that tragedy.

Anyway it's all moot because Chief Wahoo is no longer. Personally I think the Indians would be smart to talk the native American population and come with a logo that both portrays the Indians in a positive light, and is also a cool baseball logo. It can't be that hard and would turn a negative into a positive. Just my two cents.

Sounds like an excellent suggestion to me.

I am really tired of all the "whitewashing" of logos and pictures. Soon everything will be so bland and monotonous. How will we know of past lives and peoples?

Am still waiting for the South to rise up and complain about the Yankees.
