have not had one since shops have been closed for 4 1/2 months - wife have been trimming me with my Wahl mustache trimmer when it starts getting shaggy - now that shops are open i'll have wife continue doing it - real barber shops are scarce in this area , more salons , unisex , + stylists now - cheapest cut is now $15.00 + tip - figure that i have saved $90.00 so far _ will continue to do so !

Started giving myself a buzz cut several years ago with a set of clippers, partly to save on the expense of going to a barber shop and partly for the low maintenance. For a while, I was going to the barber shop every few months for a more professional look, but I stopped because I didn't care anymore. As long as I was presentable, it was good enough. A few years ago I did experiment with growing my hair out, but it wasn't long before I got tired of dealing with it and went back to a buzz cut.

I have been cutting my own hair since around 1975. Wife and I had two boys, so I started cutting their hair too when they were youngsters. Couldn't afford to go to a shop at one point.....now, I've come to the realization that I'm a cheapskate.

About 2 months after the SHTF I bought a Wahl Elite Pro Clipper set. My wife and I have been cutting my hair (4 times so far and I have a full head of hair) ever since and it is not that hard to give a great haircut to myself. I find it FUN, relaxing and much safer from a health stand point! I don't see myself going back to the Barber Shop anytime soon - even though they have reopened in my area.

Quite honestly, looking back they were NEVER a very clean Shop anyway! While they had the Barbasol Disinfectant Jars at each station, I rarely saw the Barber's use it! More for "looks" to satisfy health code I believe. The thought of having a Barber (even with a mask) breathing down my neck doesn't exude reassurance!

So far the Wahl Clippers and scissor are lots of fun for my wife and I.

I have been cutting my own hair for about 12-13 years now..
The money I saved got me more ammo, gunpowder and guns!
Did have to replace the Wahl cutting kit early this year.
The old one just wore out...

My wife has been cutting great grandsons and my hair since the barber shops closed. The barber shops have been opened up but since I made it several months without them I'm going too try for the rest of my life. I'll have more money for powder and shot and she can cut my hair in a lot less time than it takes for me too go too the barber so that gives me more time too watch tv and eat ice cream. Win win all the way. Larry

Cut my own hair again last night. Been doing my own cut and color since January, and will continue until active contagion ceases. Only business I've gone to in months is Costco during geezer's hour.

My wife’s been doing mine for over 20 years now. A buzz cut, it’s not like I have much hair anyway.

I’ve been helping her with hers during the pandemic. Turns out I’m pretty good at cutting it straight across the back, and she does her own coloring and such. I think she’ll enjoy getting back to a beauty parlor though once all this is over.

I trimmed my hair 2 days ago. Using an electric Remington hair trimming set. Haven't gone to get a cut in 3+ months now. I used to use a beauty shop store that would cut mens hair for $15. There was one on the boulevard that would charge me $20.

The little wife just gave me my second hair cut with my 2nd Elec. Razor that came with all the adj. plastic snap on from 1/8 to 3/4" and the left and right ear slant pieces to help make for a nice looking job.

She is still learning the art of using the comb as a guide, which is how I learned but hay, what ever floats your boat. She is getting where is even "Free handing" which makes me a little nervous but it is only hair.

I "Hate it" when I hear her mumble... "Oooophs" but it is just a joke to have some fun with me.

It actually looks better than the Barber, since his hands shake and there are a few ends that stick out here and there, when he is done.
I might change Barbers soon, since with that straight edge Razor, I want to come home with both my ears !!

Has she ever forgotten where she was and started talking about the latest annoying thing her husband's done?

I've been cutting my own hair for over a decade. While the Wahl trimmers are decent, if you're considering doing it yourself long term, the investment in Oster clippers (I use the Fast Feed) and real hair shears is well worth the money.

I used an Oster clipper for maybe 20+ years before it died on me. Wouldn't turn on. Been using a Wahl since then. Over 5 years(maybe?). It'll get the job done, but the Oster is definitely better.

I've been using my Wahl with a #2 guide on my head and beard. I look like a slightly balding spider monkey.

Years ago I had clippers for the poodle. An old neighbor, I think he was
close to 90, needed a haircut pretty bad. I volunteered and gave him the
best I could. When I got through He looked in the mirror and said "Nope,
that's not the way I wanted it at all." Then he laughed.

The young lady who cuts my hair is beautiful inside and out.
She charges $12, I give her a $20.
I have to schedule my hair cuts 4-5 weeks ahead because that's how far she's booked out.
Lots of other places here in this very rural area but she's the best.

I wear a hat 99.9% of the time and could care less what my hair looks like.

The hair dresser at church gave my wife the first set of clippers a little over 33 years ago! I only have 2 rules.

1) Never let the wife cut your hair after she gets in a heated discussion with your teenager! (son #2 had to live with that for 5 weeks!)

2) Never let your wife cut your hair after she just found out anything you did wrong. In the winter I like it longer, but it has become down right shaggy when I've been on a roll!

Haven’t had a haircut since feb. just made a deal with next door neighbor who is a barber, to trade lawnmower repair for a haircut. Find out whether it was a good deal on Wednesday.

I have been cutting my hair for over 10+ years. I always have had a clean, short, cut. After I moved out and started paying my own bills...I noticed with my hair being short, they just put it on the #2 setting on the sides, then hand trimmed the top. Really wasn't a big deal, neck area (back of neck) took me a few times initially to get it right. I don't use a mirror anymore after the initial few times, natural hair line like most people and I have never in all this time had someone say "I can tell you cut your own hair".

I think the bottom line is if you maintain short hair it's really no big deal; if you have longer hair, then it could be tricky.

My reasoning was not to save $15-$20 it was the time and production of it. Should you want to have small talk and enjoy supporting a local business, I get it. I just have other things I'd rather work on. Time to cut hair? Ok, into the bathroom and 10 minutes later I'm done. For those that are interested in the frugality aspect...I bought a top-of the line model which back then was $ 100.00 I believe. Hair cut every month, x 12, x10 years...although I know it's been longer puts me at $ 1.20 per use. Meh...

Although I could certainly use the savings accrued by cutting my own hair, there's no way I would ever attempt it. I come from German & Scandinavian, blonde-haired, blue-eyed stock; with extremely fine hair which barbers all my life have told me is hard to work with. The slightest wayward path of the clipper is readily visible, and it looks pretty bad. My hat's off to you who successfully do your own.

Regards,
Andy

Shops have reopened here, but I'm not comfortable with a stranger in my face for half an hour right now. I'm cutting my own. Sometimes I have to get my wife to touch up the back for me, but sometimes it looks good enough without her help.

I never was pretty, and I reckon it;s too late for that to change now.

My Barber, who I have used for 30 years, has decided that he is not going to follow the state's requirement to operate using appointments. So, his shop is full all the time, with folks crowded together. Since my wife takes anti-rejection drugs for her transplant, and has a compromised immune system, I am not about to chance it.

I was able to purchase a Wahl set with multiple guards early on, and the wife is now cutting my hair. Latest was this morning. #4 guard for the top and back, followed by left and right taper guards for the ears, and a little bit of scissors trim. She has been getting pretty good, and I might just become another cheap skate and let her keep on doing it.

It sure felt good to get excess hair off with temps 100+ this week.

Almost cut my hair. Think I'll just trim it for now and see how long this lasts. Not comfortable, either. This is not a p[olitical comment.

My last real haircut was in mid February. About a month ago, I couldn't stand it anymore. I was trimming my beard, and said "why not?" I just went over the top, did the sides and back. Cut every hair to the same length. Kinda tough doing the back, but what the heck. I can't see it.

Not long after I finished my work of art, the gal that cuts my hair called to say she was opening back up. "Too late, Deb! I did it myself." She insisted I text her a picture and then had the gall to text back and snicker at me. She's a sweatheart, so she can snicker all she wants. At least she feels needed, eh? Like many of you, I'm in no hurry to go back to a barbershop. I'll be cutting my own until all this blows over.

Before any of you ask. . . . No, I ain't gonna post a picuture!

I dated a hairdresser years ago. That worked well while it lasted, but it was pre-pandemic so it doesn't count. No social distancing.

Started cutting my own just over a year and a half ago.

One reason for the change is the advanced planning and the time it takes for haircut from my barber. Set the appointment, then the round trip, discussions of POTUS, the border, welfare, international aid, WTO & China (WHO wasn't on the radar yet), religion, morality and other banned topics (I'm not discussing them here, just relating actual events), took over an hour and a half. My barber is actually a "she" but she cuts mostly men's hair and has a barber pole outside her shop.

For me (Am I the only one?), the most bothersome aspect of haircuts are those small hair clippings that end up in my ear lobes, around my collar & neck, in my shirt, outside my shirt, on my pants and shoes, just all over. And I'm sure they fall all over the interior of my car, my house, everywhere. Perhaps that's why I like those Anal Retentive (AR) modern sporting rifles so much. Never found a barber that could prevent those hairs from infiltrating my clothing, but I did encounter a local barber Gene, in a small town named Appleton, Minnesota that actually ran a vacuum cleaner to clean up most, but not all, of those annoying hair clippings. I just had to make sure he didn't vacuum out my ear drums.

Then, I found amazing technology for self haircuts. I may have first "seen" it "on TV." It cuts cleaner if I shampoo and dry my hair first so they don't clump together, and best of all, I don't have to wash my hair again afterwards because it stays clean. Not a single hair clipping as residue. Comes with spacers of various thicknesses, which can be stacked for an even, clean haircut. I can decide on the spur of the moment to cut my hair, and in less than half an hour, I'm done. That part of a regular haircut when a barber repeatedly pinches different bunches of hair between the index and middle fingers to stand the hair up and cut them evenly, that's all done automatically and more uniformly by the suction and the spacers. I love my Flowbee.

Default My hair has been short with no part...

...since my crime fighting days...except when assigned to narcotics and vice, of course. You had to look like a hoodlum or bum then.

Not a crew cut...just evently trimmed to same length all over.

About 10 years go I got a $40.00 CVS coupon after a purchase valid for a Conair haircutting product. Could not let that go to waste so back I went to see what was available. Found a Conair set with multiple ‘blades,’ scissors, combs, and even a smock. It was $43.99 IIRC.

Haircuts used to be every 3 weeks at $25.00 a clip...pun intended. That was with a tip.

Given that was roughly $400.00/year I have saved more than $4 grand. Score!

Be safe...be well.

Almost 30 years ago the hair cut place refused to give me 1/2 off. Figured that 1/2 the hair should be 1/2 the price. Been cutting my own ever since with a $15 electric clipper. The beard gets scissored. The dentist won't give me 2/3 off either.

Wife's cut mine for 33 years now, usually in September.
I wear it in a ponytail that comes below the bottom of my shoulder blades, 10 minuets and she done for another year.

Last time I went to a barber I was 10 years old.... after they closed my grandmother started buzzing my hair... in my teens I taught myself to do the same and have paid for a haircut exactly twice because my hand was broken....

One has to wonder if this was the result of a home haircut gone bad:

My last haircut was in 1989 for a job interview. After that I decided that if somebody didn't like the idea of an Injun with long hair, that's between them and their grey matter.
By the way, I did get the job and worked there for 'bout 10 years, 'til a new manager came in and started acting like a jerk.
Two weeks later, I was working elsewhere, making more and still had my long hair.

The only period I had long hair and bread was many moons ago when I was assigned to a CDS. My regular hair style is a "Peter Gunn" cut. One of my Wife's girlfriends is the only one that remembers "Peter Gunn" and she is my regular Hair Stylist plus she gives me a "Pedicure" when I get my hair cut. (please don't let the other guys know I get pedicures)

For the most part, I have cut my own hair most of my adult life (in buzz cut style using one of those clip-on combs over the blades). I can't stand having long hair. After I cut it, my wife usually trims up any places that I might have missed. For awhile, I was doing some consulting work for a small chemical company. The owner-manager never actually cut his hair - he just ran an electric razor over his skull every morning.

Back when I was in college (Ohio State), there was a barber college in downtown Columbus, about a 15 minute bus ride down North High St. It was a fairly large place, usually with about 25 or so students. They gave free haircuts to OSU students, but you also had to let the student barber shave you with a straight razor. I never got cut. I really liked those straight razor shaves - very smooth.

Besides barbers, one other group is really taking a hit from the pandemic - Dentists.

Does she play the "Peter Gunn" theme while she's cutting your hair?

About 30 years ago I got tired of taking care of my hair.
Grabbed the wife’s Oster Dog clippers,, chose the 5F blade and cut it all off. The 5F leaves my hair about 1/4” long. Do my entire head with it then the beard and mustache.
I have a lot of hair and it grows fast. I usually cut it every 3 weeks.
My FIL is elderly and no longer drives so I take him to the barber for his hair cuts. First time we went I did not get my hair cut and FIL is worried about imposing on me just to get him to the barber.
So now I am back at the barber until FIL passes. All is good. His barber is an old school barber. No styles, perms or colors. His average customer is 65+ years old and as long as you want it short or a crew cut he does a great job.

My barber had hart attack last Oct. I was way overdue on haircut when I ended up in hospital Christmas. Finally got hair cut in January , longest it’s ever been. Then this CV19 came along and I finally got second cut this year 1st week of July. Got my 3rd one yesterday, back on two week schedule. Barber is happy, my hair is hard on his clippers.

I've been cutting my own hair for about two years. I got tired of paying money for really sorry haircuts.
