TikTok???
With all the recent furor over TikTok (including the recent news that Microsoft might buy it), I had to find out what it was, as I didn't really know. I had understood it was something like Twitter, but was short (15 second) video clips you can broadcast to the world instead of text. I looked it up on Wikipedia, and that is indeed what it is. I pulled up a few "best of TikTok" examples on YouTube and watched them. I am mystified why anyone would waste their time on these (I feel the same way about Twitter). Is anyone here a TikTok addict, and if so, what's the attraction?

The fuss is that it's a Chinese product, and runs on Chinese government servers. They supposedly mine it for data. Microsoft buys it and mines data for a profit, and it becomes no different than Google, Facebook, Amazon and others mining data for profit.

I think that it is a little bit more nefarious than just saying it runs on Chinese servers. The fear is that it feeds personal US citizens data to Chinese servers aka the Chinese communist party who are prone to use it for spying and stealing intellectual property. The Chinese police state would like to do to the world exactly what it does to it's own citizens...... Take complete control of their lives and how they think. The West has been blind to the Chinese infiltration and thief of our intellectual property for decades so that Walmart can keep importing cheap Chinese goods. It is stopping under the current administration.

I don't Twitter and I don't plan on doing Tik-Tok. I would probably just figure out how to do them and suddenly they become stone age.

I thought the Chinese got all they needed with the OPM hack. OK, maybe they needed some stuff from LinkedIn and Facebook to complete the picture. Most of my .gov buddies consider themselves compromised already.
I've seen some of the Tik-Tok videos. They vary from the hysterically funny to the banal and crass. Just like real life, IMHO.

And that the app can activate your cell cam & microphone and
record to send info home, regardless of the "permission" settings,
copy and send home any information stored on phone, etc etc etc.

Information is power in today’s world. Mess up any major system and you can cause a lot of problems for all of us.

It's a fad for teenagers...
...and I'm not the slightest bit curious about the content.

My parents, now in their late 80s, are very frustrated that I don't have a Facebook page. They have time on their hands and snoop incessantly on everyone connected to anyone they know.
Not interested in sharing my latest thoughts, meals, photos, health issues, or bowel function with anyone. This forum and one other is as far onto social media as I go, thank you very much.

I have no Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or TikTok accounts, and I have zero plans to get any. I like forums like these where we have a common interest. I don't need to watch strangers doing stupid things.

Pretty much nailed it IMHO. Same here, this is the only forum I'm currently posting on.

Well, you have heard somebody say "That's the stupidest thing I've seen..."
Now there is a way to record, monitor, AND share just how much more stupid the world can get, all courtesy of the PRC...

For this curmudgeon Tik Tok is a misspelling of the sound that a clock makes.

It's like any other social media. It has it's good, and it has it's bad. You kind of have to give it a bit before you can fully decide if you like it, or hate it.
You will find there are a lot of like minded folks on there. If you can find them, and follow them, more pop up in your feed. Eventually the dumb **** stops showing up. There are a ton of young conservatives and gun owners on there spreading the 2nd to the masses.

I guess nothing is completely pointless, but the TikTok videos I have seen come really close to it. Why would anyone want to see 15 second videos of kids prancing around?

Sounds interesting since most tik Tok users make short music videos. Not a whole lot of meaningful intellectual property to be mined.

I've understood that some of the TikTok "performers" are making big money from their clips. Can anyone explain how that's done?

You missed the “Drift” here, didn’t you?
Joking aside, I agree with you

Wait.....can I get it on my CompuServe account? Or maybe from the Myspace page?
People need real work or interpersonal interaction, and those unable, or afraid will default to these apps....it is sad really.....

If you're 13 years old, you'd get it.
