Scene one.....Leaky faucet in the bathroom. WIfe asks you to fix it. You bitch and moan, put it off for a week, finally under duress you go to the hardware store but a $.50 washer get the vice grips and channel locks to unscrew it and fix the leak. You then state, DONE!

Scene two....The camp needs a new waterline run to the fish cleaning table. You pack up the boat the night before, provision the ice chest. buy food and drink wake up at the crack of dawn Saturday and are at Lowes at opening time to buy whatever you need to DO-A-FIRST-CLASS-JOB . You decide that this is a good time to buy that new volt meter you have been meaning to buy and you might as well stop by the marine hardware store to get the parts to fix the bait trawl.
You arrive home Sunday night smiling, sunburnt and tired with a newly plumbed fish shed and fixed up bait trawl in your wake, a new volt meter and that brand new handheld GPS with electronic compass and maps of the entire USA that was calling your name at the marine store.....

One of these was WORK and the other was FUN. Can y'all decide which is which

I once told an acquaintance that now that I'm retired, I don't see how I ever found time to go to work. I'm busier than ever now...BUT (and here's the key), I'm busy doing things I want to do...not things that someone is telling me to do. Go figger.

Of course, I'm sure that your dear wife, being the sweet person she is, made you want to fix the bathroom faucet. Am I right?

Problem I see is with scene one. The trip to Lowes for the .050 washer is only the FIRST trip. The next trip is for either a replacement washer assembly, of which there are hundreds, or for an entire faucet assembly due to breaking off the supply line. Regardless there's no such thing as a '050 plumbing fix.

One time I was replacing the kitchen sink and ended up remodeling the whole kitchen.

I hate it when that happens!

I'm own a small construction company and am 61 years old and any trip that requires going to Lowes is exactly like work to me. Anything that involves repairing or improving the house or yard is exactly like work to me and that's why I don't like doing it anymore and many times refuse to do it. Sure doesn't make my wife happy.

Work = wife or other boss nagged you into doing it.
Fun = Your idea, involves fishing & new toys.
Actual amount of labor involved isn't a factor. Note: wives tend to get cranky when designated as either "boss" or "toy".

I'd consider coming out of retirement for a job like that!

That's just what my aunt and uncle who live here in town said when they retired.

I owned and Fixed apartments for 44 years 50+ hours a week, service calls in the middle of the night and on every holiday meal I had! I didn't want to look at it when I got home! My wife was a stay at home mom for 17 or 18 years and worked part time after that. So se started fixing things around the house and got pretty darn good at it! If she couldn't fix it I looked into it! In fact When I supervised maintenance crews, very few of my men were as good as her!!

The thing is, I really love to fix things, as long as someone is going to say Thank you! and not, "Took you *&*^% long enough!"

When we were dating she lived in a Sorority (ZTA), One night I came over but didn't feel like the normal "Movie & Pizza", so I grabbed my tool box and walked around The House fixing things. I walked in the kitchen and most of the 25 year old wooden drawers were broken. In about 35 minutes I had them all fixed! and moved on. Next week when I showed up for a study night (Their GPA was about to put them on "Double Secret Probation") The sorority president handed me a plain white envelope with my name on it. Inside was a note of thanks from the kitchen staff, and a key to the refrigerator! I was so honored! No one in the sorority had a key.

The point is when someone is grateful it wasn't work, it is like a type of play, that others can't or won't do!

As long as fixing things isn't a requirement, I love it. It's surprising what people put out on the curb that is a cinch to repair. Weed trimmers, tables - even rusty tool boxes have found their way home with me - repaired and like new in no time at all. Beats TV.

Anything involving a boat trip, to me, is fun.

It's one of the reasons I want my ashes scattered at sea.

Then there's dealing with a broken toilet-at 11PM on a Saturday night-and you discovered the problem earlier and know the hardware store opens at 9AM Sunday morning. You put a big sign on the bathroom door and over the toilet-but nobody in your family can read.

Mark Twain didn't know what he was talking about..or had never done what he liked.. I hunted and fished for fun...Then I started guiding hunters. I fished and had lots of fun..then I started guiding fishermen (and fisherwomen). I loved shooting..then got involved in shooting nuisance pigeons...lots of 'em...for money. Guiding hunters...3 days every season were kinda fun...then it was just another job......first day of guiding fishermen and fisherwomen was ok also.. then was just another job. ..after the first day of shooting pigeons and shooting a couple thousand(or more) shotgun shells...was MORE than work. I did have more money...but a lot less fun. But I do have memories of those days...when the CRS doesn't spoil 'em.

First thing, I hate anything plumbing related. The next thing, and probably more importantly, I do not like any kind of job that requires immediate attention, that alone makes it work. My best work is when I have time to plan when and with what material and tools I will work with. I guess I don't work well under pressure. At one point in life I had my own business that involved working on vintage Ford Mustangs. My neighbor said I had every mans dream hobby job. Instead, what I found is that a hobby becomes work when it becomes your lively hood. You are expected to make money, by definition, that means WORK!

Where I live in Central NJ, 2 chain hardware stores plus a plumbing and heating store in town. My last foray into plumbing, the water flow wouldn't stop in the toilet, realized the tab that presses down on the valve had broken off. Bought an adjustable unit, it couldn't take the water pressure,bought a fixed length. I note on the original the tab was just a molding, on the replacement unit, it was a brass screw, allowed for finer adjustments. And yes, I DID turn the water off before I started.
Another rule for plumbing repairs, home repairs in general-NO audiences !
The friend whose mishap I mentioned above said it's amazing how, when a toilet needs repair everyone loses control of their bladders and bowels. My friend said the next day he came with the replacement parts, he told his wife, kids and MIL OUT !!! And I don't want to see you back here for THREE hours !

My wife wanted a new frying pan. It was too big to fit on the cook top because of the lip on the cook top. That pan cost over $5000.
No good deed goes unpunished.

Electricity on the other hand, scares the heck out of me. One old guy told me you won't get electrocuted if you keep one hand in your pocket....it looks funny and takes forever to get anything done but I don't get shocks anymore.

There is only one full time job that I would accept now
