About a 10 days ago the blower motor went bad.
Have a HVAC come out and if I put in the motor, no warranty.
$567 later, turn on the AC. Ice all over the input pipe, fins covered with ice. HVAC guys come out. Check everything.
Need Freon that you can't get anymore....
New system is about $3,800 + and can't be put in to 8/6/20.
By the time they put in the new system, the heat wave will
be gone....
And so will some of my gun's to pay for this....

Wish the one that went out on me a few years ago had only cost $3800. System had a pinhole in a fill cap. As it was a R-22 unit, that part is not replaceable because of the laws in place to eradicate R-22 from domestic use.

I have a swamp cooler that wprks just fine in my climate.

Just went through that last month. Go to a "Box" store (Lowes, Wally, Home Depot) and get a window unit. 6 days without air, hottest week of the Summer and no afternoon rain. We about perspired. Gratitude will be large when the cool comes back. Joe

I am an apartment dweller, use window units. Came home one night a few years, the unit in my bedroom was kaput, GE, made in PRC. $20 at a yard sale, got 300 days out of it. Current unit is GE, made in Thailand, this is its 6th summer. $45 at a Goodwill store.

Told my wife at the beginning of summer that if our AC ever needs replacing I'm going to put in a mini-split. That was after I helped a friend install one in his 3-car garage/workshop. It took us an afternoon and there was no HVAC tech required. We had to run a 220v disconnect from the panel, then install, vacuum down the evap coils and open the valve from the compressor. I don't recall the size, but it has 2 evap units and it does a fantastic job of cooling his poorly insulated garage. It's also a heat pump and we're looking forward to seeing how it does in the winter. Best part is the total cost was under $2000.

Sorry for your AC troubles .... We've had a bunch of triple digit heat days and no rain and our AC croaked as well. I got lucky and had a friend of a friend thing and $700.00 later, the AC was turned down to "hang meat"

No, if anything your bills will be less as mini-split systems are more efficient than a typical ducted system. Just like the heat gain into a house, there's heat gain into ducting as well. Take the ducts out of a system and efficiency naturally goes up. If I recall correctly, the unit my friend bought had a SEER rating of 19, and there are also higher ones available.

I have mini splits in our house, they heat good until the temps get down into the lower 30's and they cool great, they will keep the house at around 70-72 even when it is over 100 outside.
They are very cheap to run, haven't had a power bill over $150 since we installed them

R22 is still available for repairs, just can’t buy new equipment that uses it. It is expensive.
Some companies just want to replace the older stuff.

OP might need a second opinion. Some HVAC companies are known for trying to replace units.

Saturday I went in for MV State inspection and juice my cars` AC.
It got worse. Car has a rear end suspension crack that means the end of the line for my car.
Some of my stuff in the safe might be needed to get rolling again.

I have a mini split for my two floor, 1000 sq ft condo. Heat pump/compressor outdoors and three wall units indoors. Works great, very efficient, quiet heating and cooling. Mitsubishi. Cost me close to $10K professionally installed, so not cheap. Got $1K back, rebate, from the state gov, I think it was.

"R22 is still available for repairs, just can’t buy new equipment that uses it. It is expensive."

They told me that getting the R22 would cost about 2/3 of the price of a new system and I still would have a AC that is over 20 years old...
Well, that some government people want to save the world from destroying the Ozone layer.

There are replacement refrigerants for R22 but if the unit is over 20 years old it might be best to just bite the bullet.

Just had a customer have a coil spring a leak and dump the charge. Easy fix on the coil but, with the system holding 16# R 22. It wasn’t cost effective to repair. New system going in.

HOGWASH! get a second opinion! NO household unit holds 16 pounds of R-22, EVER! It is around 4 to 6 pounds. The ID plate says which type of refrigerant and how much it holds add approximately HALF a pound for line set and inside coil!

It still may be a better deal to replace the unit, but the first company is a LIEING THEAF!

Not sure what type of equipment you work with. But the high end super efficiency units do hold quite a bit of refrigerant.
Please see the attached tag that shows how much refrigerant is needed for the condenser. Now factor in about 50’ of line set plus the evap coil.
Easy 16 # total system charge.
And yes this is a residential condenser.

we just had to have our 20 year old unit refilled wit the old stuff a couple months ago. Cost $535 to fill it, but the HVAC guy said the unit was still working okay and he had the freon. Call around and see if you can find someone who has some. Our guy said he bought a bunch of it before they made it more difficult/unavailable.
