Default COVID Has an Upside

Went over to the WalMart "Neighborhood Store" today and wow, no panic, toilet paper in large supply, canned tuna on the shelf. Usually, with a "Hurricane" just off the coast, folks would buy up anything not nailed down. I guess more folks worried about dying from Kung Flu than Isaias. Even Jim Cantore ain't paying it attention. We'll see tomorrow. Joe

To me its the meat. Suppliers can't sell as much. Bought a processed hog for $250 and picked up a cut wrapped and frozen Holstien steer with great marbling from the Hutterites for $2000. Thats a lot of rib steaks, TBones, roasts, sirloins and burger. Both freezers are stuffed.

If your willing to buy on the hoof, meat is cheap right now. Finding a butcher who isn't booked up is the hard part.

We looked into buying 1/2 beef, knowing we would need a new freezer, the one we have is 3/4 full of vegetables and such. We have had it over 50 years.
There are no freezers available in our local area, so the beef is on hold until freezers are back in stock.

Have a blessed day,

Leon

Guess you haven't noticed that they have a free shopping service that pulls your order and places it in your car trunk.
I won't go to a store that allows barefaced customers, but even before Wally world instituted the new mask requirement, I was sold on their shopping service as a primary tool in the pandemic fight.

Is it wrong that I honestly thought that this thread was going to be about the fact that it is taking rioters and other buffoons off the streets?

Sorry, I know that sounds dark and perhaps even a bit twisted, but I'm not wishing death upon them, just that it will take them off the streets, hopefully prompt them to reevaluate their life decisions and ultimately become better people.

I'm still a bit bitter over the fact that I caught and subsequently had to suffer through COVID-19 because some -- I'm struggling to come up with a word that isn't a curse to describe him, but I've got nothing -- person, walked right up behind me in a checkout line, completely ignoring the lines on the floor and coughed all over me without a mask on.

Just the other day I overheard some local burnout yahoo kid babbling about COVID, saying; "I ain't wearin' no mask and nobody can make me do it neither 'cause COVID ain't real!"
I would have loved to have grabbed that little fool by the collar, thrown him against the wall, then told him about how real it is, exactly how painful it is, how I caught it from a worthless dirtbag like him, how his faux sothern accent and forced deep voice made him sound even less intelligent than the ignorant, conspiracy theory nonsense he was spouting, and how he ought to be wearing a mask, not for himself, but for those whose lives have actual value.

I'm sorry for what you went through, but thank you for your eloquent share of the experience.

Before my recent surgery in NYC, I stopped at the Long Island National Cemetery to pay respects to my late cousin Sal, who succumbed to the virus, alone, at the VA hospital.

I've got a condition that prevents me from wearing a useless mask.
It's known as Freedom.
Freedom to live my life as I see fit.

You can stay at home if your freaking out over the chi com flu.
I'll live my life as usual.
And when I'm in a store I'll keep the 6ft distance.
But if you approach me and start to go into a rant, I'll close fast into your covered mug.

Freedom, isn't it great.

Say, now long do you figure that steer is gonna last your family, Steelslaver? How much does a cut up entire steer weigh? And does the butcher cut the steer up into hefty pieces, you freeze ‘em, and then hacksaw off what you want for dinner in a day or two? How long can you freeze your beef for and it’s still good?

(I like the idea, but suspect that would keep me and the missus in steaks for maybe five or ten years. Then there’s freezer burn, etc., to worry about, too.)

I got the burger in 1#+ tubes, the steaks wrapped 2 to a package, some big roasts etc. The Butcher charged me .65 a lb hanging weight. for 870# not including the liver etc.. Some where over 500# of finished meat. So about $4 a #. But, the burger is all burger, no water added, I got to chose how thick I wanted my steaks, etc. The guy who cut it up told me I can call anytime and get liver, heart, ox tail or tongue if I want some as most don't take it. Plus, I got a big bag of tallow and will use that to mix in with deer burger so it isn't so dry. Also good for making deer sausage. I will have meat left over nest year this time. Even having a couple BBQa and inner parties. Every wed during school is usually spaghetti night and the girls can have all their friends over for a meatballs and spaghetti feed. A package of steaks makes a good present when you go visit a relative. Plus, its good trading stock.

I like my meet. I usually go through some deer and an elk too.. This year maybe back off on the deer and just concentrate on getting an elk.

I can respect your position.
Down here stores are required, I believe at the county level to post a sign stating masks are a requirement for entry. It's not up to ownership or employees.
Couple days ago I walked into a small shop I frequent just as the owner drew on a very large angry man and stated in no uncertain terms he would shoot him in the knee if he did not leave.

Great timing on my part but the big dude left in a huff. Seems he threatened the young lady working the counter with harm after she asked him to put on a mask.
I have enough battles to face without finding a way to get inside 6 feet to pay cash for my beer.

Covid has do damn upside. Stuff is back on the shelves thanks to the great manufacturers and logistic workers, and because the people got their freaking sense back and stopped panicking.

I recently picked up one at Lowes. It was on sale too. My last one broke right at the start of the pandemic and I was shocked when I couldn't find one...cost me a keg and a half of beer when it started to get warm. I use it as a kegerator but I'm now back in business

Here in the 602, we have many, many businesses that won't let me in without a mask ..... Mr. Dr's office, Costco, my bank, etc.etc.etc.

Don't you have a similar conditions in your area and if so, how do you conduct certain types of business?

I presume that he writes them some sort of bizarre rant which is inexplicably structured like a poem, consisting of generic, faux-macho insults and projected insecurities, which is then promptly thrown directly into the trash because the recipient cannot make heads or tails of what it's even about and just assumes that it's some sort of a fraternity initiation prank.

I don't understand a lot of things and I really don't understand, with the little bit of discomfort and effort that wearing a mask involves, why someone would refuse to wear one. One can say that it's their right, freedom or what other reason that they choose but it boils down to not caring, when talking about the virus, about their health or the health of those around them.

There’s no “upside” to a worldwide pandemic and this thread has become more trouble than it’s worth.
