Default A. Wilford Brimley Gone

Better known as just Wilford Brimley has crossed over.

First movie I ever saw him in was Borderkine w/ Charles Bronson. He got killed off much too early in that one. I also like Crossfire Trail. Have never seen any of his other movies but may try to check out the firm it sounds interesting.

Sad news, he was an entertaining character actor. Awesome mustache!

I enjoyed his short performance in Absence of Malice.

Great role in Carpenter's remake of The Thing.
Seemed like the same guy in many different characters, sorta like the Duke.

Got to meet him briefly in Asheville, NC at a hotel we were staying at during a motorcycle trip. This would be in the mid 90's.

He was a very friendly gentleman and we always enjoyed his work.

R.I.P., sir.

He was a character actor for sure. I think they invented the term just to describe him.

Liked him in everything I saw him in, except the Quaker Oats commercials accusing me of being morally deficient if I didn't buy cereal.

Variously credited as Wilford Brimley, A. Wilford Brimley and Wilford A. Brimley. He was in quite a few movies going back to an uncredited part in "True Grit" in 1969. For a list See: Wilford Brimley - IMDb

Probably not well known, but he was from Lehi, Utah. He and his family operated a small restaurant in Lehi for several years, but it closed several years ago unfortunately. Not surprisingly it was named "Brimley's". I intended to try it for several years but it closed before I had an opportunity.

He was one of my favorite character actors.

Liked him a lot myself as an actor. Recall he was in a series called "House" long ago. He seemed to be a good actor in multiple roles.

RIP Mr. Brimley. A great actor and I think a real cowboy as I read once
that he shod horses before he got into the acting business.

The film I always think of first when I think of Wilford Brimley is John Carpenter's The Thing, one of my favorite Horror Films.

Godspeed.

And who can forget the commercials for Di-ah-bee-tus supplies?

He always played the older roles and seemed old even when a not so old man. He was good actor, even in Cocoon

I'm sad to see him go. He was a great character actor with a very high believability quotient. He did appear to be a very senior citizen even 30 years ago - probably that helped to give him a number of juicy roles to play, and he rang the bell with almost all of them.

We'll miss him. R.I.P. Mr. Brimley. You were a good'un.

I really liked him as the hitman, Bill DeVasher, in the legal thriller film, the "Firm".
A larger than life role!

Best,

Not particularly a favorite actor, but Brimley was in a seldom-seen made-for-TV (I think) film with Robert Mitchum thirty or more years ago.

Far from Mitchum's best effort in comparison to his earlier years when he was in many good movies, "Thompson's Last Run" is worth seeing - once. Brimley co-stars as an archaic-type law enforcement officer in pursuit of Mitchum's character.

Arguably the best character actor of all time. He defined and absolutely owned every role he ever played. A formidable presence every time.

Absence Of Malice” was finally on TV and I taped it just so I could watch the end about 25 times. It’s the best revenge ending movie of all time that didn’t involve bad guys getting killed. And Wilford Brimley absolutely stole that whole scene and the entire movie as far as I’m (and you) are concerned. Paul Newman even seemed to enjoy just sitting there watching him in action. It’s my favorite later Paul Newman movie.

I had to look it up but he was the Bailiff who told Maddie Ross there was no appeal from Judge Parker's court except to the President of the United States in the original True Grit

Gleaned from the web:

"Before getting work as a stuntman and actor, Brimley worked as a bodyguard for aviator-turned-recluse Howard Hughes. But the actor was always reluctant to discuss Hughes, a famously reclusive man in his later years. “He was a good guy,” Brimley once said of his former employer. The job came in part through Brimley’s membership in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints: Hughes reportedly preferred to employ Mormons, as he liked that they didn't smoke or drink and they rarely talked."

The bailiff was Dennis McMullen. Wilford Brimley is a spectator on the front row of the courtroom scene. He looked the same younger and was sporting the walrus mustache.

I'll take your word for it IMDB said he was the Bailiff. I didn't think it looked like him but that would have been 50 years ago.

Can’t screen shot from the movie, And show Brimley on the front row, but it will show the actors in the scene.

He also had a brief but important and memorable part playing a rancher who helps fugitive Robert Redford, his stolen horse, and Jane Fonda in “The Electric Horseman”. Another scene stealing role. The last thing I recall him in was “Crossfire Trail”. My favorite Tom Selleck movie.

It seems to me he stared with Richard Farnsworth in a short lived series about 2 sheriff's deputies in Colorado. Possibly called " The Boys of Sunshine". It dates from the 80's and I really enjoyed it. Does anyone else remember this or am I having a senior moment, again.
