The OP also opened his list with Del Shannon, who has been gone for 30 years. Perhaps we should ask him what he meant by "recently departed"?

Brad's astounding ability was thoroughly natural -a gift. He was one of those relatively rare individuals who just 'have it'. I don't know what his vocal range was, but I'm thinking it was more than twice what mine has ever been. If I'm not mistaken, every one of those vocal tracks on their albums was done by him. A real pity that he was so very sad within that he took his own life.

Well, I also listed Hendrix, who has been gone for 50 years!

A more recent passing: Neil Peart of Rush, a great drummer and an amazing lyricist.

RiP Nick Menza (Drummer)
From 1992
Megadeth - Foreclosure Of A Dream
A song about the family farms - still relevant today
Quote:
Rise so high, yet so far to fall
A plan of dignity and balance for all
Political breakthrough, euphoria's high
More borrowed money, more borrowed time
Backed in a corner, caught up in the race
Means to an end ended in disgrace
Perspective is lost in the spirit of the chase
Foreclosure of a dream
Those visions never seen
Until all is lost
Personal holocaust
Foreclosure of a dream
Barren land that once filled a need
Are worthless now, dead without a deed
Slipping away from an iron grip
Nature's scales are forced to tip
The heartland cries, loss of all pride
To leave ain't believing, so try and be tried
Insufficient funds, insanity and suicide...
Now with new hope some will be proud
This is no hoax, no one pushed out
Receive a reprieve and be a pioneer
Break new ground of a new frontier
New ideas will surely get by
No deed, or dividend some may ask, why?
You'll find the solution, the answer's in the sky ...

Link Wray - Fred Lincoln "Link" Wray, Jr. (May 2, 1929 – November 5, 2005) was an American rock and roll guitarist, songwriter, and vocalist of Shawnee ethnicity who became popular in the late 1950s.
One of the early electric guitar pioneers with songs like Rumble, Shawnee, slinky. He was known as the father of the Power Chord. Rumble (1958 hit) was brought back from the dead with the movie Pulp Fiction.

Fun fact: Link Wray was one of the first to intentionally create distortion in his guitar sound. He did this by making tears in his amps' speaker cones.
Also, Ry Cooder covered "Rumble" in the movie, Streets of Fire.
Speaking of Streets of Fire, "I Can Dream About You," by Dan Hartman (d. 1994), was on the soundtrack and was probably the only pop hit from the movie. I still hear it on the radio from time to time.

Charlie Daniels?
Did I scroll all the way down and not see anybody mention Charlie Daniels? Not my favorite musician, but he was prominent.
The best musicians, hands down, were the Phil Spector Wall of Sound Wrecking Crew first call session musicians, Leon Russell, Glenn Campbell, Tommy Tedesco, Hal Blaine, and too many more to list. Their list of hits and contributions to others hits is enormous.

For me considering more recent losses, I’d have to list Chris Cornell. An incredible and powerful vocalist, who could belt out grunge and hard rock like no other; yet listen to his softer covers of Prince and Michael Jackson tunes. Great range, one who the minute you heard the voice you knew who it was.
