What could be less practical than this?

Probably a Swiss Army knife, as if I don't have enough!

Or a cupcake at La Madeline or Central Market upscale grocer/deli.

Believe it or not, I had one of those, sold it on eBay for a tidy sum.

I thought everyone had one of those. After all, who wants an inaccurate Norden Bomb Sight?

How 'bout a light saber...

Is that impractical enough?

How about an H. Gerstner and Sons tool chest. Which would be very practical, except I don’t have many tools to keep in it. So I now have a way cool guys toy box.

I do live in a apt. in a 3 family house that I own with a large driveway that I must keep clear in the winter.
I also have several project's planned that the tractor will make much more easy on my old body.
My wife thought I was crazy for spending the money but a guy has to do what a guy has to do!

Richard—That’s exactly how we use ours—a present from our beloved friend, Fred (Old Bear). It is great for storing pocket knives.

Always wanted a Machinist chest like that but could never afford one - had to settle for a Kennedy. Sadly, I don't even see them in pawn shops.

Default Wow!

Some really neat stuff above.

Though known to waste money, my most ‘useless’ purchase was a cigar humidor. Bought it in 2000; paid more than $2k for it. It’s a very nice piece of furniture...powered...and holds a whole bunch of cigars.

But now I can rationalize the expense. Just $100.00/year!

But the actual cost must be multiplied by the cost of the cigars I have bought to fill it! And refill it...and refill it...

All in all, happy I have it. For all of you who bought something cool, you wanted it! You earned it. Good on ya! Enjoy!

Be safe...be well.

ETA: Feel much better. Just checked price of a brand new one identical to mine. $3100.50!

I want the big professional roller cabinet with a chest on top. I think it it would make a magnificent piece of furniture. The problem is the combo would cost more than my first house!

Well, maybe not impulsive, as I thought about it for several years, but impractical. A pistol is more effective and legal, where I am, to carry concealed with a license, whereas this is not:

On the other hand, I enjoy having it, and have occasionally kept it in hand when checking on bumps in the night outdoors. It is quite high quality. Burger Sword Canes, South Africa.

Impulsive non-firearm purchases -- The less practical the better-bonham-kit-jpg

That was taken the day I bought it. It's a stainless steel drumkit that is a replica of a famous kit played by the drummer from Led Zeppelin. Ludwig only made 100 of them, and only sold 50 in the US.

Cost me right at $5k. I'm not a pro, but I'm a very dedicated hobbyist. It had been on display for about 10 years when I finally broke down and bought it. I was there to buy a much cheaper kit, but figured I might as well go big.

Any chance I can fly in and you can calibrate my Norden? I’ve been noticing my bombing runs have been a little “off”.

Been playing my Gibson Mk. 72 since I bought it about 1981. Very fine excellent guitar. But, over the last several years I've been looking off and on at Martin guitars. Just didn't have the budget for what I wanted. Bought my daughter a DMX for Christmas in 2004. Thought I'd really spent money ... $205 w/o case. So, I figured I'd find a similar one for my own use. Low and behold ... they sure are more than $205 w/o case! Found a nice higher grade Martin for $700 but it got sold before I could come up with the money. Then I saw this ... Martin npc-aura gt for sale on Facebook. Price was sky high ... $1900 w/ case. Not in my world. My wife looked at it and said we'd have to do w/o some things but that I should get it! Nope. Not I! Few days ago, sent the owner a inquiry. One thing led to another and ... it is currently sitting on the couch beside my Gibson. Bought it for $1,350 ... w/ case. Have been using it at church with our worship team. This Martin has got the biggest hugest largest sound I could imagine in a guitar! And even better, the neck is not so thick as my Gibson. This really helps since I broke my left hand last year and have been having some problems playing because of issues w/ my little finger and ring finger. It makes a lot of difference. I had been able to play maybe 20 -30 minutes. The other Wednesday I took the Martin w/ me to the choir room and played it. Was able to play w/o problems for a little over 1 1/2 hours. That is a big fat hairy deal! Would never have spent the money except my wife kept telling me to buy it. So glad I listened to her! Sincerely. bruce.

Awhile back I was hell bent for leather about getting a 4 wheeler and small trailer for deer hunting. A close lifelong friend had a great deer hunting property and I needed a way to retrieve any deer we shot. Well, needless to say I got it and $9K later she and the trailer were in the garage. Well later that year my buddy sold the property and the 4 wheeler sits in the garage with 9 miles on the odometer, mostly from driving up and down the street a few times a year. It did haul one deer out of the woods, but that's it. Oh well.

A second airplane. Due to sharing the hangar with my wife, There's not enough room for both, and I have to keep one in another hanger. I'm 82, so maybe I'm losing it.

For years I plowed my driveway with a Chevy 4x4 3500 with a Fisher 8' MM plow.
Just before I retired on disability at 62 the Chevy gave up the ghost.
My work truck was a Ford F150 4X2 that got around fine in Ct's winter's.
So I thought why buy a new 4x4 . So I bought a 4x2 Ford XL thinking between my John Deere D155 with a 46" plow and chains and a new Simplicity 30" snow blower I'd have plenty of time to clear snow.

It took over 2 hours to clear the snow and I ended up with a sore back for a few day's.
Last year a buddy bought a small Yanmar tractor with a bucket and that got me looking at all the other make's and model's of tractor's.
This summer the drive belt went on the John Deere D155 so off to the dealer I went to get a belt and that is how I ended up with the 2038r and extra's that I posted about earlier.

I purchased an Orvis 3D Helios #6 fly rod, Galvan Torque reel and two fly lines. Fly fishing has become my new passion and I thought at my age I would like a top flight outfit. I had poured over reviews and settled on this combination. It really didn't become impulsive until Orvis promoted a Father's Day sale in 2019. I researched fly fly shops and found one in St. Louis that had the components in stock, I was driving down to the SWCA symposium in Texas during the sale period and stopped at the shop and purchased the outfit. I figure the first fish pictured cost me about $500 per pound excluding travel, lodging , meals and rental car expenses. I have caught many more since so the cost per pound has diminished but since I do catch and release it is all a paper savings. It didn't put me on a Ramen noodle diet and my frivolous spending has afforded me marvelous memories. It has traveled with me to NZ five times since and we sure have enjoyed our times together!

Your eyes are not deceiving you. This is a 31+ inch heavy equipment fan. It is an unused fan from the Huber Reversible Fan Company in Erie, PA. It showed up on eBay one day, and I decided I had to have it. Why did I buy it? The proprietor of the company, and inventor of this fan, was my late uncle. It is called the "reversible fan" because the blades are spring loaded and can be turned and locked in a matter of minutes to blow the air toward or away from the operator as desired, as opposed to having to disassemble the machine to turn the whole fan around.

My uncle was married to my mom's oldest sister, and i spent a lot of time with my aunt and uncle while growing up and as an adult. They owned a vacation property in western PA and hosted the family reunion for many years. My uncle became a private pilot and would take us up in his small plane. His business allowed him to do foreign missionary work as a heavy equipment operator.

I don't own a bulldozer, but when this fan came up for sale, I decided I had to have it. The seller thought it was really neat how the fan came back to someone with a family connection to it.

I usually buy stuff with a reason, even if it's not entirely practical. The only impulsive buy I can think of was buying a yo-yo. My friend was showing me around town on my birthday, and one of the places we went into was a toy/game/puzzle shop. Not sure why, but I bought a yo-yo. Didn't really have an interest in them, so I have no idea what compelled me to buy it. I did play with it, but never got into any complex tricks or anything like that. Haven't played with it for a few years now. Maybe I should see if I can find it.

During, I believe the Gulf War, a bomber pilot was challenged on the accuracy of carpet bombing. He replied that it was 100 per cent. Every bomb dropped buy US Aircraft hit the ground!

I just spent $400 on EWG red dot mount for a 1911 and a viper red dot. I have moved from buying guns to doing upgrades, new triggers or sights. fancy stocks.

So far I've avoided it but sooner or later, A Voorhis made 'Iron Mistress' Bowie will be on my short list. This would be a Bowie similar to the one designed for Alan Ladd from the Film 'The Iron Mistress'. This will set me back probably more than $5 or 600.00 and no practical use shall ensue.

There is simply no doubt i my mind that I would figure out how to make ceiling fan out of that. It's a bit small, but that makes it perfect for an office or maybe a bedroom.

1955 vintage "The Martin" tenor sax. It has a very nice sound though.

Martin seems to be a sleeper in the vintage sax world - Selmer, Conn, Buescher, King, get all the attention. The Martin has a great sound, is easy to play, and roars - especially the low end. Definitely no regrets. It could use an overhaul, whoever did it last made some rather odd choices and now a couple keys stick. He used leather instead of cork on the keys. Pads are in good shape.

It is interesting - I have a couple mouth pieces that don't work on my other sax - they are dead and stuffy. They are much more lively on the Martin.

Impulse buy.... let's see...

A dash center bezel from a 2012 Fisker Karma.

Impulsive non-firearm purchases -- The less practical the better-psx_20200801_1737391-jpg

I like it because it's Fisker, but also because they offered different types of wood from different places in the Karma. This one was called "Sunken White Oak" and was retrieved from the bottom of Lake Michigan as a result of the logging industry in the late 1800's. It's in my display case next to other Fisker items...
