Thumbs up Happiness is a new coffee maker!

For a very long period in my life I had some kind of jinx or curse hangin' over me when it came to coffee makers. I could buy the cheapest or the most expensive one around or anything in between. Never could get more than 6 or 7 months out of any of them. Five years ago I bought a Krupps and I decided to try an idea I had.

I decided to start using only distilled water for making coffee. Our city water is awful and also very "hard". It was about middle of the spectrum in cost and I liked it a lot...until yesterday morning. It gave up it's ghost. I hated to see it go but it did give me good service for a long time and nothing, after all, lasts forever.

After breakfast I headed out on my quest to find a new coffee maker. I was totally blown away by all things they do with coffee makers now a days. I really have no need for all the bells and whistles that are available on some of them. I don't need a timer or programmable temp or brew features etc. I went to Walmart, Target, Bed Bath and Beyond and finally found what I wanted at Best Buy. It's a Ninja. About $100.00. Great features including a detachable water reservoir. Simple clock and NO DRIP SPOUT on the carafe. Most of the ones I've had didn't have that feature and I never understood why anyone would make a carafe that dribbled coffee everywhere.

So this morning me and my new Ninja began our journey down the (hopefully) long road of great coffee service. And I must say we are off to a great start!

At my house, coffee is a major food group! My quest for the ultimate coffee maker led me to the Moccamaster. It's way expensive, but if coffee is as important to a person as it is to me, it earns it's keep.

Ninja seems to make good appliances if my Ninja blender is any indicator.

If you don't have luck with the Ninja, perhaps a stovetop percolator or a French Press might suit you better.
Good luck.

I agree that coffee is it's own food group...and a major one at that. This Ninja makes coffee that tastes as good as the coffee in places like IHOP and Cracker Barrel. Coffee at home never quite seemed to measure up. Well, that's just not true any more.

On most days when we are both home for the day we will go through a 12 cup pot. But on really cold and nasty days we may go through 2 12 cup pots.

1st day of a new coffee maker is now also a 2-pot day and we just started on pot #2.

Who needs cocaine....

I'm a 4-5 pot a day coffee drinker (brew 8 cups at a time). My pots last me about a year. I always have a spare pot on hand so there is no interruption in the flow of coffee.

I do 8 cups at a time as well and between me and my wife (mostly me) we go through 3-4 pots - 1/2 caff of course.

At home we use a Bunn that runs about $125 and with filtered water they last us about 7 to 9 years. For camping, I still like drip coffee, and pick up stove top dripulators for around $5 at yard sales (best deal was 25 cents). We usually give one or two away a year. We go ahead and use a Bunn filter for ease of cleaning. Same formula as at home. Never too weak, never scorched!

When the power is out long enough to get out a Coleman Stove, there is a pot of coffee on it for when, "The neighbors stop by to find out what's going on!"

I think our old Black & Decker coffee machine holds the world's longevity record, not to mention the value for money record. We got it for about $15 somewhere circa 1988. It lasted at least 25 years. To my knowledge, we never cleaned it and always put plain old tap water in it. It was a really basic machine: no clock, no timer. The indicator that it was on wasn't even an LED, just a piece of red plastic!

When it finally died, we naturally bought another B&D. I don't know what it cost (my wife bought it). This one had lights, a timer, a clock, really a fancy one. It never really worked all that great and died in about a year.

Now we have a no-frills Proctor Silex much like our original B&D. I hope it is as good.

That's a great idea. I wish I had a dollar for every time I had to run up to the corner McDonalds to get a few coffees to go cause our coffee maker gave it up.

Our pod using coffee maker died, we still had over 1/2 case of pods so we bought another pod coffee maker. The new one came with a plastic device resembling a plumbers helper which was to be used "when and if" the coffee maker clogged, a straightened paper clip (none provided) was to be used as well. There was a caution regarding using the paper clip which stated hot water under pressure would cause burns, unplug the device and let it cool overnight.

The coffee maker didn't last six weeks, it made a lot of noise, hissed, thumped and banged but nothing more. We tried the plunger and paper clip, nada. I called "customer service" and was told to use bottled water, I asked how bottled water was going to get past the clog. The answer: "Buy a new machine".

The warranty was useless, no more brand "K" items will ever cross our threshold again.

We bought the cheapest bare bones coffee maker for around $19.99 and no problems for years now.

No question that having a back up is a great idea. We have a French Press that we use occasionally and that could be ... pressed into service if the need arises. We even went so far as to get a manual coffee grinder if our electric grinder is ever inoperable.

I make a pot of decaf every morning for my wife .
It's a B&D that has a clock and can be programed when to start I set it to start at 4:20 am as she get's up at 4:30 to get ready for work.
I very rarely have any as I hate decaf.
But I go out almost every morning for real coffee and a BLT or a full breakfast .

Once I was in a feisty mood and decided to play a trick on Miss Pam. I made our morning coffee using decaf. I had accidentally bought a can previously.

Miss Pam is one of those people that NEED REAL COFFEE in the morning.

Doing that was my first mistake. My second mistake was telling her why she still felt so groggy after 2 cups of coffee.

I think that is the closest I ever came to getting a divorce. Don't expect I'll ever do it again, neither.

For us there's been only one brand. BUNN.

If I just want coffee, I'll use our Cuisinart 12 cup. If I want good coffee, I'll plug in the old electric percolator - simple, no clock, no built in timers or garage door openers, no GPS apps - just good HOT coffee.

I have a relatively new Keurig that serves me well. I sit at the coffee kiddie table as I only have one 12 oz cup of Victor Allen's 'Donut Shop Blend' to begin my day. After that it is water followed by liquid bread.

My mom, at 87, has succumbed. She been fully assimilated as she now much prefers coffee to tea. She does, however, drink it from teacups as to not feel like such a turncoat.

My dad gave me a Cuisenart YEARS ago for Christmas. It has a built-in bean grinder and it has given me tremendous service. I have a water softerner in the house and I only use filtered water from the refrigerator. It's probably another of the few things they would find if my house got hit by a missile, besides the Griswold cast iron skillets and Pfaltzgraf dishes.

I have been using the same old school Presto percolator for about ten years. No need for filters, coffee is really hot, can make it as strong or as weak as you want, easy to keep clean and shiny, was cheap, looks cool on the counter and is "retro" and "vintage" like me. I bought a back-up one on Amazon because I didn't think it would last this long. It won't die. It also sounds really neat and smells like coffee while percolating.

I only drink one or two cups a day, I use a B&D Brew & Go a one cup maker, it comes with a travel mug, it cost about 15 bucks, makes a good cup if coffee.

Most durable pot we ever owned were Bunn. Almost eternal. Made reasonably good coffee.
I am lazier these days. Keurig maker with pods. That is the first cup in the morning. I want it on my hand very shortly after clearing the rack.
Then after that it is the French press. Yeah it burns through coffee grounds but done right it is the best coffee I can make at home. And unless I drop and break it, will last longer than I will.

Thumbs up COFFEE

Our son gifted us a machine that grinds beans. He suggested filterd water-- well we do, a couple pots a day, at least.. Have to say best coffee ever. Mr Coffee seems to last longer with the filtered water as well.

It's a BREWVILLE I believe-

Finding a good coffee maker is like trying to find a good toaster. None of them get over 3½ stars on Amazon.

15 year old Black and Decker, been cleaned once by my SIL who thought it was disgusting. The place you pour the water in isn't pretty. Makes the best cup of coffee on the planet.

I had an Italian co-worker once and she brought a commercial Italian Espresso press to work, for work. Every new employee had to wait for her to be around so she could give an instructional class on how to use it. I loved the machine and all I can say is Holy Cow.... why don't I have one already?!

True....I've been roasting my own coffee beans and changed over to a new brewer several years ago. What a huge difference.

Here is a list of the SCA Certified coffee makers for sale here in America. These coffee makers brew at the correct temperature, 200°, and the cycle lasts for the correct duration......6-7 minutes. I've been using one of the BonaVita machines for about 3 years. Believe it or not, you can actually taste the difference. It makes 8 great cups of coffee in approx 6 minutes.

Me used a pirex glass peculator we got or a wedding present way back in 1968. Broke the glass grounds basket and pipe. makes really good coffee. we also have a Bunn pot I bought when I was on a very long TDY. Makes a fairly good cup of coffee and it keeps the water ready for the next pot. I do like a French press when I want to take my time with making coffee. I have always make coffee with distilled water or good spring water, I use cold filtered water. 1/4 cup of fresh ground, fresh roasted coffee. and let the magic begin. strong, black and hot.

Another Bunn fan. I don't like to wait. Ours is four years old but I do the maintenance on it regularly. Put a pot of vinegar in it and let it sit for a few hours. Then flush with several pots of water. Clean out the nozzle and run a flexible cleaning tool down the output tube.

Hard water is not good. Tastes bad too. Distilled is great but I use a Brita pitcher.

I was wondering if somebody might mention this. I'm also a home roaster. Routine duty goes to my Teknivorm. Water temperature and extraction time are both keys to good coffee. That's part of SCA's reviews. The Teknivorm is about 20 years old and still ticking. It's built like a tank.

We got away from coffee drinking long ago, but when we were first married, we had a stainless vacuum pot you used on a stove burner. It was very entertaining to watch it work. Anyone else remember the ingenious vacuum pot? There were also glass vacuum pots. I haven't seen one for many years, probably no longer made.

I recall my folks had one, hardly ever used.

They're still available though:

Same general design, but ours was stainless steel. No idea whatever happened to it. Like so many things we had years ago it was probably lost in a move, sold in a garage sale, etc.

Vacuum pots . . . I have a Yama: Yama Vacuum Brewer - Two Sizes

I use it now and then "for fun" but it's not my day-to-day workhorse. It can be finicky and if the grind isn't right, it will stall. When all is working right, it makes excellent coffee.

The Sweet Maria's site in the link above is a great resource for coffee snobs, err... coffee lovers like me. You'll find all sorts of brewing devices and green coffee beans to roast. Sweet Marias got me hooked on homeroasting a lot of years ago.

It's expensive, but worth it. I measure my coffee intake by shots, not pots I have had a nice grinder ( most important ) and a sort of lower end espresso machine for probably 10-15 years now. Over time. I have had to do some repairs, but I kind of like doing that kind of stuff anyway. So even though initial cost was high, they both have lasted long enough to well pay for themselves...and with that I think it's time for my second double cappuccino for today....zooom zoom

After years of Mr. Coffee-like pots and Keurig machines, a number of years ago I circled back to the old Presto electric percolator. I just prefer the flavor better. My daughters agree and now both use the same also.

Same here. Bunn is all we've used at home for many years. A few bucks more than the others but worth it.

Coffee is made in our house EVERY morning without fail. Our last coffee maker gave up the ghost last week after five or six years (pretty good considering how often it was used). I refuse to pay for a new coffee maker when even the el-cheapos are $40.00 or more. Went to Restore and got a Krups for $15.00. It's doing great so far!

[QUOTE=delcrossv;140867473]For us there's been only one brand. BUNN.

[/QUOTE

My wife bought one of these stupid things and I couldn't hate it more. It keeps an internal reservoir of water hot 24/7. I can't empty it so if it ever gets contaminated there's no way to clean it. Who knows what might grow in there. Then the nice people at Bunn seem to think I need a pot of coffee in 90 seconds. So the Cafe Bustelo espresso grind (very fine) causes the fast flowing water to overflow the filter unless I make a reduced amount and even then it sometimes dumps grounds in the pot. Maxwell House and the like taste like dishwater so changing coffee is not an option.

I can't wait for it to die.

Interesting. We use both Costco fine grind Colombian and coarser grind Stewarts without problems.

You do have to use the deep Bunn filters.

In all the years of owning these we never had contamination problems as stuff won't live in 200 degree water. Couple of times a year run a pot of vinegar through followed by 4 pots of water to flush it out. No issues.

And yes, in the morning I DO need my coffee in 90 seconds.

You can empty a Bunn. Google it. I remove the filter basket, and dispersion nozzle and turn it upside down. The water will pour out the same tube it does when it's making coffee. Once a month turn it off and pour a full pot of white vinegar and let it sit all day. Then flush by running 5 pots of water through it.

You do need to buy Bunn filters. They do cost a bit more but we're not talking gun money here. The Bunn filters are taller and more porous and prevent overflow. They aren't hard to find. Walmart usually has them.

I do need a pot of coffee in 90 seconds.
