Is it true?
I've been told that a 12 gauge not rifled shotgun using a slug is just as effective from 100yrds as a rifle. True or false.

Effective as in what! Range, accuracy, knock down power, cost?

" ... just as effective ... "
Oh heck, a lot more effective than most rifles, if it hits its target where it counts!
The only question is accuracy. It would be a very poor rifle that isn't more accurate than a shotgun with an unrifled barrel. For deer hunting, said shotgun / slug combo is probably accurate enough out to 100 yards. But that might be pushing it considering the ballistics of a 12 gauge shotgun slug.

I have a Remington 1187 12 ga with a smooth bore cantilever barrel, w/Leupold 3-9 VXII scope. Using Lightfield rifled slugs, it will group 2"2.5" consistently at 100 yds. I have taken plenty of whitetail deer with it over the years from roughly 40-110 yds. with no problem. So, if that's what you're talking about, then yeah, it's pretty darn effective at 100 yds.

I shot a bunch of deer here in Ohio with 12 ga slugs through a Rem870 rifle sighted smooth bore barrel, before pistols and now straight walled rifle cartridges were allowed and I can't imagine they would have been any more dead if I had used a rifle of some sort. I firmly believe the person behind the gun is more important than the firearm or cartridge used. Effectiveness is dependent on on circumstances.

It is just as effective and accurate depending on the gun and the shooter. I have a Mossburg 500 with slug barrel and a 4 power scope that shoots dead on at 100 yards. The 24" barrel makes a huge difference compared to all the Rem 870's I hav e with the shorter 18" slug barrel, that shoot well but no comparrison to the mossburg for time after time perfect shooting.

For years I successfully hunted deer using a 12 gauge with a rifled barrel & slugs. This was in dense woods where 50 yards was a long shot. I can vouch for the 12 gauge slug's effectiveness on deer. Many times, the deer dropped in its tracks.
But I didn't use shotguns / slugs by choice; it was the law back then. Maybe you can used straight walled cases here now, I will have to check.

Mostly depends on the person behind the gun, shotgun or rifle.
My personal best was 85 yards with a smooth bore slug barrel 870 20 ga., no scope, iron rifle sights. He did go about 60-70 yards before he dropped dead. An experienced rifle shooter would be able to get a clean kill at a greater distance.

Might not win any bench rest matches with a 12 gauge slug gun, but if that slug connects with flesh and bone, about 100% of the time the hunt's over. I have an old Winchester Model 12 12 gauge shotgun with a full choke barrel and no sights other than the front bead, and I have no trouble keeping all hits on a piece of 8-1/2 x 11 typing paper at 100 yards. Shotguns with good sights and slug barrels can do much better.

Well I can tell ya that a load of #3 steel works pretty well out to about 10 yards. Deer was bouncing through the marsh without a care in the world....never knew what hit him!
