Default a scam attempt

My computer died Monday night, I replaced it with a new one on Tuesday. I was restoring my files and bookmarks on it yesterday.
I got lazy and instead of entering “amazon.com”, I googled “amazon”. The link below is what I clicked on. Not a good thing.

First clue was the guy that answered my call to Amazon had a strong middle eastern accent. Second clue was the very poor phone reception and a lot of backround noise. I let him talk for a few minutes before I hung up.

If one clicks on the link below and enters anything in the user name line, you get a warning telling you your account has been blocked and to call the number shown.

This looks pretty darn real and I can see how people fall for it and can get scammed.

The moral of this story is to be aware of the address line you are clicking on when using any search engine.

For the last 3 days I have got
A call about noon every day
Saying a warrant has been
Issued for my arrest.
They must be having a hard
Time finding my house.
I am not putting a pot of
Coffee on for them tomorrow.

Nothing new, I have received many such calls in several variations, just not recently. A similar call may come from a "process server" who wants paid for "losing" a notice of a big lawsuit filed against you.

I love the calls where the "agent" sounds like Apu from the Simpsons, saying if I don't pay my overdue taxes to the IRS a warrant will be issued for my arrest.

I am tempted to pick up and say "Thank you, come again".

A new one I have received 3 or 4 times in the last couple of weeks is from PayPal. It is a payment confirmation of money being withdrawn from my PP account and transferred to someone off continent for items I supposedly purchased from them on Ebay. Instructions say to click on the link to log into my account or call 1-888-655-2807 if I did not make this purchase so that they can suspend and block this transaction.

The email also says "It may take a few minutes for this transaction to appear in the Recent Activity list in your Account Overview"

The first one of this type scam I received I logged into my PP account by opening a new window. No activity in the last seven days. Now I don't even bother opening their emails.

The latest scammer calling me leaves a message that they are going to
ding my credit card for $399. I don't even have the card that they mention, so pretty sure they are scammers.

Don't worry - they'll be around under another name.

My wife got one yesterday. Phone call telling her that her Amazon Prime status had been automatically renewed for a sum that was roughly double what she originally paid for it. She talked to the guy on the phone and he said they made a mistake and double billed her checking account. However, if she gave them her account number they'd correct the mistake immediately by crediting half the amount they debited back to her account.

Sure. Click. Hummmmmmmm.

I ended up falling for one of these scams. They ended up stealing my identity. After two weeks, they tried to give it back! They came clean and apologized, saying they would return any losses plus 25% interest! (Cue "Ransom of Red Chief!") I said you got it, now you keep it! They felt so sorry for me they gave me $10,000, then I reluctantly took it back!!!
Okay, sorry folks this was just an old joke that ran around my last place of work, with many variations! I just hang up on them when they call, or delete them from my e-mail. One guy actually offered to give them his SS# and bank acct. #; they hung up on him! Just yesterday on my answering machine a "local" lady with a British accent was threatening my wife's Amazon acct. for her recent transaction...her last one was back before Christmas. You gotta get creative with these people! If you've got a 3-digit IQ and are retired, you live for this stuff!

A scammer got ahold of my wife's credit card number. I decided not to report it because he spent less than she did.

I like the car warranty calls. For some reason they want nothing to do with my 2004 Ranger or 1974 Stingray. My primary vehicle is a 2006 ElectraGlide which they don't like either.

I wish Linda from "dealer processing" really would call me "one last time" and be done with it!
