The big local Oktoberfest event here is the New Braunfels Wurstfest, just north of San Antonio on I-35. Unfortunately, there was a large fire last year that destroyed buildings on the fairgrounds, so there will not be a Wurstfest this year. Should be up and running for 2021.

Been to many, those were the days. I enjoyed all of the different "fest" leading up to Oktoberfest. I probably will never go back to Germany

Our city having a large German Heritage, and having a sister city in Germany we have a "German fest" usually in the summer, with imported German beer, wursts, etc, and a German band, but not this year. Covid19 spoils everything.

I went to Oktoberfest in Munich years ago, awesome time. Nice city, good beer, nice people, and great food. The festival itself is really big, huge beer halls where each one was sponsored by a beer manufacturer. Lots to explore in Munich and easy to drive around and check out other parts of Germany and Austria. Beautiful countryside and all of the homes and farms were immaculate.

While traveling around, we found a town that was hosting a wine festival. Stayed at hotel across the street from the wine festival. While waiting for friends at the lobby bar of the hotel, the room was full f older guys all dressed nice and chatting. I struck up a conversation with one guy, and asked him if it was a high school reunion or something. He said, no, it was a veterans reunion! Room full of WWII German vets.

He was a nice guy. I asked what it was like, and how he felt about Hitler now. He said that they were young, and didn’t have any say in joining/fighting. Said they ran a greater risk of being shot if he didn’t join... . He was a pilot and said he was very fortunate to have made it through the war.

BTW, that wine festival made Oktoberfest look like an AA meeting; yikes could those people drink!!

Went to oktoberfest in 61 & 62. I have one of those big beer steins somewhere, haven't seen it for awhile. It was about a 15 minute trip from our barracks so we went almost every night. Great fun !

there was a wine fest at Bad Durkheim in the same time frame and the wine was served in water glasses.

I looked at the top ten list bier tents again and i think some money changed hands to make that list. my list would have been Hofbrau . Spaten . Lowenbrau and Augustiner. being inside the tents is overrated as it is VERY NOISY in them. the bier gardens outside of the tents is a lot nicer and a much better chance to meet people.

survival tip: have a good meal before you start drinking and keep eating something like the pretzels otherwise you won't see 9:00. that is experience talking

I have 6 of the clear glass steins from the fairgrounds and don't have the painted on bier brands on them. I have a couple of the clay steins from the Hofbrauhaus downtown

I like an occasional beer and really enjoy the flavor of brews in Germany, though a single glass gets me tipsey and is my limit.

Cincinnati "use" to have a serious Oktoberfest. My daughter told me last year around 500,000 people attended.

Oktoberfest Zinzinnati is the largest one in America. Many times I have been one of the sea of revelers.

With this year's festivities being cancelled I think the Porta Potty suppliers will feel the pinch.

I was in Germany for two Octoberfest seasons, it was great. As was mentioned there are other festival seasons to be considered "fasching" spelling could be off was a big one, they go all out for Christmas, I lived in wine country near the Mainz/Wiesbaden area. I found the wine festivals to be more fun than Octoberfest, they are less of a tourist trap because few know about them. The Burgermeister whacking the bung into a huge barrel of white wine, the spray of wine and festivities rival anything I've experienced here in the states. Small towns have their own local parties, some take different times of the year in a special way. Everyone seems to go on Holiday, it seemed like from about November through January business would be closed for Holiday. Most of the Germans I knew that had any money at all went to the South of France or Spain for Holiday.

The one around fasching is Starkbierfest, "starkbier" meaning strong beer with a higher alcohol content than the normal helles - basically what we call bock beer in this country. Never been to Oktoberfest, but have been to a few Starkbierfests at the Paulaner brewery in the Nockherberg area of Munich. Just insane - think of a large college field house packed with long tables and an oompah band at one end. It starts in the afternoon and by early evening everyone is alternately either dancing on the tables and singing along, or waiting uncomfortably in line for the pissoir. Good beer, too, but it does lead to a rather fuzzy head the next morning.

Also attended the Bad Dürkheim Wine Fest each year. A friend
gave the license plate to me.

Funny how these "commemorative" pieces were easy to grab and
set on the porch for a quick photo. I must have liked it there!
