Default Evidence auction

Nice to see that the local PD doesn’t automatically destroy firearms but auctions them.

We trade all our eligible evidence weapons to the gun distributor that we buy duty weapons and equipment from. They then sell them to who ever they want. Been doing that for over 20 years. The last batch had a 4 inch nickle 38/44 Heavy Duty in it....I wanted that old fella pretty bad!

This has been about 10 years ago, but I attended a Sheriff's auction in southern Indiana. All sorts of stuff there, from soup to nuts, including probably a half-dozen seized or evidence guns, nothing much interesting about any of them, but it was cash and carry, no paperwork or anything like that to buy the guns. Just pay and walk away, like a private sale.

Back in 1977, the City of Reading, PA police department was going to have an firearms auction. It was mostly snub nose .38s and a bunch of M1 carbines. I was familiar with the carbines because my dad had one. I looked them over, and back in the dim recesses of my memory I believe one of them was a Rock-ola. But there I was, a recent school graduate on my first job, so I didn't go to the auction. Woulda, coulda, shoulda.

We used to have a pawn shop around here that bought lots of confiscated guns from some west coast police dep't. They would never say where. They opened sales up to FFL's first. I was working at a gun shop so I got to go look them over. There were guns that obviously got banged up, some suicide guns, lots of Jennings and Ravens and High Points. But some gems were in there too.
That shop went out of business, I don't know of any that do that anymore.

No I'm not sadly. I think we got about $450 credit for that Heavy Duty. I would have whipped out my wallet so fast for that, sparks would have flew off my butt!

I'd like to see all PD's do that and use the money for the families of fallen officers.

Sadly too many local governments see guns as evil and are more concerned with gun by backs.

We do the same as CQB27's department. The last time the purchasing rep came I sat down with our evidence sergeant and gave him a rough estimate of values on the guns he was selling before the rep ripped us off. The money we got is used for firearms and equipment.

When I was the evidence officer, I would get a Court Order to sell or destroy our confiscated weapons. Ravens and others of their ilk were taken to the steel mill and melted down. All other guns were bid on by FFL dealers, and the highest bidder got them all.
Two dealers who had gun shows usually bought them. One of the confiscated guns was a 2nd Generation Colt SAA that needed repairing. I asked them if I could buy it and they gave me a good deal. Still have it, but it's been refinished and re-calibered.

Columbus, Ohio PD used to notify local FFL of guns and related stuff, and take bids for the whole lot. Only currency accepted was Remington 870 Riot guns. When my F-I-L retired, they had almost 1000 of them. In those days the snipers carried Rem 700 BLD 30-06 rifles. On a separate auction one year was a 55 gallon drum full of Commercial 30-06 brass from practice and qualifications. All the other range brass went with the junk guns.
