Snow fall
Well we are getting our first snow of the year. Best go get some cracked corn the old doe that hang out in back will be at the door tricker treating in the morning
Last year the girls had a Halloween party and I shoveled snow out back and put down a bunch of straw by the spot on the back of the shed where we set up snacks. Big fire kept them all warm.
Winter is a coming guys.

Fired up my 55 Willy’s last week, she’s talking xxxx already to me. She just won’t die, I have her 26 years now. Best running Jeep I ever owned. She’s all chained up with locking diffs. She’s begging for snow.

It was almost 90 here today. Wish some rain would fall in Callf. It would help the fire fighters. Will not be much left to burn if this keeps up. So far we are OK. Clear area around the place.

I absolutely love winter...my favorite season. The clean, crisp air...the beauty of freshly fallen snow...the smell of wood burning when folks use their fireplaces and woodstoves...it all just seems so cozy and comforting.
I was in Germany and Austria last January and took the photos below. I'm supposed to fly back there December 28 (if the European Union is letting Americans in again) to spend two weeks...can't wait!

We had snow a couple off weeks ago, then warmed up. Turned cold and either snow or rain over the next.......? We need moisture, and whichever form would be great!
Winter is not too bad here in the banana belt, actual nick name for my area of the Hills.
But with winter comes slick conditions, which isn't good, driving or walking!!!🙁🤞

The older I become the less I like winter. Give me the heat, I can
sweat for free. Really not a fan of either extreme, hot or cold. We
are having a nice long fall season here in NW Arkansas, leaves are
turning colors and nice cool nights and mornings, daytime temps in
the 80's. Just right!

I well remember the -20° degree nights during a November hunt up above Malta.

Ya, I am all drained up here. Supposed to get down to 10 tomorrow night. Everything is out of the garden.
I went for a scout up in the hills where I am going to set up hunting camp. Spitting snow all day long. To stubborn to get out and lock in hubs. Some gumbo (bentonite) mixed in the soil around there and I slid a bit and got kitty whompas and high centered with one front wheel in a deep rut and the other off the side a touch. I was just crawling down the hill. Had to get out and lock in hubs. Still no go, but a short run of winch cable and a small pine fixed it.
No more problems with hubs in. My own fault. LOL But, I don't think my buddy better be pulling his camp trailer to where I wanted to camp. Have a good plan B and C though.
I don't worry to much. Wife knew about where I was wandering around and her and my brothers know if I don't show up to go looking for the big fire. Have some warmer fuel, a chain saw, good bag and a coffee pot. and chains for all 4 wheels.

He must live in West Yellowstone. Now that place gets a little snow.
You don't really have to shovel your drive way, Just have a good 4x4 and keep it packed down. Don't make ruts work the whole road side to side. Of course if you choice this method in the spring you will have a big thick slicker than snot sheet of ice to contend with. LOL

No snow, but it was coolish today. High around 70 after upper 90s for the last few days. I think it's supposed to get down to 45 tonight and be in the 70s again tomorrow. We do get snow but usually only once or twice a year, and it's rarely more than an inch.

Gee, thats do bad. I bet thats hard on the snowmobile salesmen
I do get tired of the snow, by spring, but, it is kinda fun to and the changing seasons make life better to me.
Like at the winter fair. They set up a course with piles of snow here and there and beside it a long smooth run. One guy hooks a line on the saddle skirt of a fast horse and another on skis grabs the rope. Horse takes off and the skier has to slalom through a bunch of flags as he goes up and down over the course of about 220 yards. Best time wins with a penalties if you miss a flag(s).
Cold makes the coyotes become prime, the deer come visit me every morning for their corn and come right to me. The pheasants hang out by the windows close to where I put out the corn. I just spend more time messing around in my shop. Town has pool, trivia, cribbage and pinochle tournaments. If thee streets get icy everyone just slows down and sometimes you see a horse drawn sleigh. Dinner parties instead of BBQs. Life in winter is different, but good.

I can put on enough clothes to stay warm. I have been as naked as the day I was born and cooking.
Some people pay a big bill for air conditioning, some for heating.
I was in Ponca City OK in October, working nights and it was miserable. Nothing on but a tank top short's and a pair of coveralls and I was always wringing wet. Rather it was 0. Put on my thermal undies, flannel shirt, jeans, black line Carhart coveralls, wool socks and my White air bobs and some good gloves and be comfortable. Plus a good hard hat liner. When I was younger I would walk around all day in the snow hunting elk. Just stop once in the while, make a small fire, melt some snow and make a cup of coffee or hot chocolate. eat a snack and go some more.
Snow and cold is a lot about altitude and attitude

Growing up in NEPA, I'm used to snow.
Last winter was warm with little snow.
I think that I used the snowblower once, and that was a borderline amount of snow, I used it just to run it.
I wouldn't mind a real winter, with snow and cold, not freezing rain and sleet.

Our last winter here in northeastern Maryland was very similar...relatively warm with not much snow.
Keeping my fingers crossed...hope to see the white stuff piled neck deep to a giraffe this winter!

More snow falling this morning. ife said there is some ocean thing that is going to cause us to get hammered this winter. I think they can have a fair idea about 10 days out and after that they are staring at the crystal ball a bit to much. I'll know a lot more in late March.
I have a plow for my Polaris and a snow blower, plenty of winter clothes and natural gas.

Couple inches snow on the grass this morning ( streets still warm enough to melt the snow). We'll take it; one year ago Oct. 10, we had blizzard and 18 inches.

When outside a little bit ago and the old doe who hangs out in back come trotting to see me, with last years fawn, now a spike and this years fawn
To her snow means I am going to give her some corn and I did. She comes up with in a few feet of me. Follows me over to the green house where I keep the corn and back to their "table" where I lay it out Most of the time the fawns stay nervous for most of the winter. But, the one year olds will usually get pretty brave. One year a twin fawn I named Piglet would come take crackers out of my hand. Her twin wouldn't come within 10' of me. If it gets really bad out I will have up to about 10 deer from the neighborhood start coming by everyday when it snows. I can see in the snow that they have a route they follow. The guy on the corner, then the judges place then mine, then down the street to another place. The pheasants will start stopping by to clean up anything the deer missed and get gravel from the driveway.

I haven’t run my new generator since that freak snow storm in October. That’s way over a decade ago. My son fired it up today. The welder generator is next. The regular generator runs my Keurig coffee maker. The welder generator runs the freezer. I’m just about ready for winter. I have plenty of firewood but I may grab two more cords to besafe.
Need to clean the dryer vent and chimneys next. Bring one chainsaw in the house to be ready.
Snow in the Rockies right on time.
Time to shop for Christmas?

Wife called me to look out the kitchen window. A little 3x3 (not counting his eye guards which are well over an inch) white tail buck was there. I said I think its Bucky who would be 2 years old now. He was a 2 point last year. I went out and got him so corn and even after not seeing me since last spring he let me get to within about 10 ft to take this picture with my cell phone
Meet Bucky

My son just got re-assigned to Malstrom AFB. My 3 year old grandson and 1 1/2 year old grand daughter got their first look at snow. He sent video. Snow around here is almost non existent. After six years assigned in Germany I love snow! My theory has always been I can always put more clothes on but if I take too many off I'm going to jail (where I'll still be hot)! Steelslaver, your baby deer make deer in my area look pitiful!

In a few more weeks a real buck will show up in the neighborhood looking to spark the ladies. Then Bucky may well be dangerous as his hormones may well overload his brain.I will need to keep a close eye on him.
I get to Great Falls quite a bit. The step daughters spend 3 out of 4 school weekends with their dad there. I even go on base to shop sometimes. If I can lend your son a hunting, fishing, shooting hand let me know. BTW as active duty military he can get a resident fishing and hunting permits. The Missouri river about 40 miles south of their is supposed to have more trout per mile than any other river in the country. I float it in the summers and it is loaded. There are deer and elk to the south, the west and east of there.

Here it is now less smokey and more chilly. Hoping it doesn't go back to smokey in another few weeks.

Well there us 5 or 6" of snow now. Went out side to unbury and start the car so it would warm up and was quickly met by 7 tricker treaters all wearing very realistic deer costumes. Old doe followed me right to the green house and was only a few feet away when I laid out a couple scoops d cracked corn. Need to hook up the plow and start parking the Lincoln in the garage when it is going to snow

I have enough snow to share, please come get some. This is what we woke up to yesterday morning. The first photos are the top of my gas grill. The last is one of the bird houses. Yes the lawn mowers were in the way of getting the snow throwers out of the shed. After some shoveling in front of the door to the equipment shed door I was able to get the mowers out of the way and get a thrower out. Then proceeded to take the thrower in front of the garage and promptly found a power cord that was hiding under the snow. Things got kinda ugly there for a second. So an hour later after reinstalling the auger in the snow thrower I was able to start clearing some snow. I'm thankful for the moisture but maybe we could have worked into it a little slower!

Yeah, winter is a-coming... 90 degrees today here in the valley, 91 predicted for Tue. when the normal high is 79. 182 consecutive days without any official rain, altho my neighborhood did have a brief but steady shower 2 weeks ago. Going down to 60 next Mon, they say. Gotta find my one long-sleeve shirt...

That must be hard on all your local trout streams or are the ones that run through your town mostly fed by spring like the ones here
But, yes, sometimes winter can be difficult, but then it keeps down the 2 or more legged vermin populations.
Never having to shovel or plow snow or get stuck in it would be nice. Not goings out on the back patio to broom off the BBQ and finding my creek floating cut offs frozen to the hand rail LOL
Having to drain up the hoses and make sure the camper is dried out. Not having a higher winter gas bill, but thats a traded off by no big summer bill for air conditioning.
But, then none of the good things that come either. The fall leaves, great uncrowded hunting and fishing. Prime coyotes worth $60-80 and Bobcats worth far more. Top Montana bobcat sold for $957 last year. Enough that just one pays for going on some late winter hunts. Most every rancher in the country will welcome you to hunt yotes. Lots of indoor games, sitting around in a nice ice fishing shack with a bud or 2.
Winter fairs.
But, the very best of all, is really knowing the true joy of spring.

^^^what he said. Absolutely great post. A completely different lifestyle, maybe better. Now, what I said (say):
The very best of all, is knowing...where the high limit room is. Shuffle up and deal! Best to all and be safe!

We had a 7 to 9" snow dump yesterday just north of Des Moines. It was hard to measure since it was melting while more fell. High 30s now and mostly melted away. My wife said I shoulder clear off my truck but it's snowless now.
