I'm 63 and have needed a shopping list forever, and still many times will be in the check out line and remember I forgot the main thing I had on my list to buy.
I've got reading glasses on my desk, couch, kitchen, garage, and bathroom.
Sub titles are always on now. Years of loud music, unprotected shooting, and being way too cool to wear the provided hearing protection at work while running printing presses for 32 years. I did finally start wearing it, but it was too late. I now live with a 24/7 high pitch sound in my head.
I broke a tooth off a while back. Dropped them off at the dentist and picked them up an hour or so later. Totally painless. I'd superglued it in 3 years ago, but I guess superglue only lasts so long.
I have to take Fenofibrate, and a 81mg aspirin everyday now for my cholesterol.
I sometimes will wake up about 5 hours after going to bed for a trip to the bathroom, sometimes I'll go back to sleep before getting the chance to go. If I do get up, I can be back to sleep in a few seconds.
Main thing is, I kept thinking my tolerance level had dropped significantly towards ignorant people, but I'm pretty sure it's stayed the same. There is just a lot more people showing their ignorance these days.

Assuming you remembered to bring the list.
Over the decades I've put a number of thing in safe places. Maybe the kids will find them after I'm gone. Took me months to find my mother's cash stash after she was gone.
Caj, you haven't trained the dog to turn the boat around and come back for you? Or, maybe get you both back to the dock?

Something I’ve found that helps with No downside is Tai Chi.....The Senior Center has classes a. Couple times a week...Different forms for arthritis, Osteoporosis, etc....You can download videos on the net and do it at home.
I’ve found it REALLY helps with balance...When I had neck surgery last year, I had to wear a neck collar 24/7 for 6 weeks..A Hard one except for Showers, than a rubber one for that...I found that the Tai- Chi classes had really helped more than I realized. No stumbling/tripping.
I’ve had 3 knee surgeries, including a ACL replacement and MRIs showing L3-5 herniated discs.... The only meds I took was Celebrex and now , if it gets bad, an arthritis strength Aleve, That and a Calicum Supplement/ Vitamin D for the Osteoporosis....
Improvise, Adapt, and Overcome...Never give up.

So from experience I am going to pass along some advice. If you are building a house or renovating a house, have the senior citizen/handicap amenities put in then. Yes, it will probably cost more money up front, but it won't interfere with your present use of the house and the amenities will be there when you need them rather than having to retrofit them.
|
Add to that - be sure your bathroom doors are wide enough for using crutches and/or a wheelchair.
We love our old house, but there will come a time when we'll have to leave because we won't be able to access the bathrooms. Because of the structures, wiring, plumbing, baseboard hot water heating and floor coverings involved, it would cost us tens of thousands to widen just one of our existing doorways, and even if we did, they are not on the same floor as the kitchen.

Since someone mentioned oriental exercises................
Fifty odd years ago I was walking into a variety store. I noticed an older oriental gent of obviously superior intelligence. He was comfort testing the patio furniture display while his wife shopped. As I was passing we nodded to each other and he asked/said: "Knee?" . Showed he was also very observant, I had a slight gimp from tweaking my right knee and he picked it up. I admitted it.
He then stated: "Westerners don't know how to walk." Since I wasn't really in a hurry, I showed interest. He mentioned that when babies start to walk, they have no muscles, so they lock their knees. Locked knees give you no balance and we're all familiar with how little kids fall down. Westerners never change.
He then pounded a fist into a cupped hand and said every time your foot hits the ground, your knee takes an impact. You have no balance and you're damaging your knee with every step. BUT, if you slightly flex your knees, your quadriceps take the load and you have balance.
The idea sounded logical. Over several months I walked with flexed knees until my quads screamed and then walked like a westerner until they recovered. Took me several months to build up my quads until I could do it all the time. But, haven't had knee issues since. More to the point, back in 2012 I found out one of my right lower leg bones was about 9/16 in too long and I should have had knee, hip or back problems. Since I'd been moving with flexed knees for all those years, I avoided the problems. I mention this because after the explanation of my physical condition, and my denial of problems, I was asked to stand up and was then asked: "Why are you standing like that?"
"Like what?"
"With your knees bent!" They decided that by standing/walking like that, I'd avoided the problems.
There's another exercise you can do every time you go up stairs-health permitting. Just put the ball of your foot on the stair treads, not the whole foot. Works the calves with every step.

if you want to live longer.
Anyone can just sit in a chair and decompose...................

As to the boat, I keep a short 3 step ladder in the boat where I can reach it and hook it to the side of the boat to get back in boat.
And, wife bought me one of those inflatable life vests in case I fell and was unconscious,, I would bob up head first.
Also, I have the Life 360 app on my phone so wife can watch where I am in case I get stranded
And I got a map and highlighted areas I fish, to leave with her.
Also I don't go out as far (6-13 miles) out in Swamp anymore.
And I bring a pee can: don't go off side of boat anymore. ( it's how I fell in last time!)

I’ll throw a couple in there......
Wearing more loafers and less lace up shoes
No dairy after 6pm
Reading glasses stored everywhere
Always take a sweater to a restaurant
Go to bed early in the evening and wake up early in the morning

My wife puts my pills into one of those weekly holders, only I quite often forget to take either the morning pills or the night pills. She is one month out of open heart surgery, thank goodness she still puts the pills up, for I have no idea what to take when.

LOL. That is exactly the first thing I forget.
Edit. Mainly because. Having lived many years without a portable phone. I, unlike the folks that have known cell phones all their lives, don't feel any anxiety or naked if I forget mine at home.

But I use my phone for different things, some phone things, and some not so phone things, but it never goes with me when I go out other than in a glove box, walking around glued to a piece of plastic ain't for me either.

I don't mind being glued to a piece of plastic. If some of the aliments and issues previously mentioned befall me I will be glad to have a phone rather than laying on the ground hoping someone comes along in a reasonable amount of time to offer an assist. Saw that way too many times during my career. I have also had occasion to utilise it to summon help for others in need of assistance when I was away from my vehicle.

Forcing yourself to drink lot's water even though it means you'll be up every couple hours all night, every night. (according to doc tonic water and ice cubes don't count.)

Old Poop
Since reading about the maladies, their treatments, and things that you regret, and that have changed, I've decided that I have most of the ones you've mentioned too. I have one, that you folks, haven't mentioned yet. It's the fact that I can no longer do the things that you have to do, to maintain your health, but I have to depend on my beloved Wife, and Son, to do those things for me. Those burdens, that I impose upon them, although they never complain, is always on my mind, and, is the most bitter pill that I have to swallow. I have learned to accept this, but, it pains me deeply.
Pardon my rant on this subject, and I hope that it doesn't open another can of worms for any of you folks. Sincerely, from a certified Old Poop.

I have officially joined the "old farts'(or Biddys)
First was cataract surgery
Then dentures
And now hearing aids.
I held off on the hearing aids as long as I could but had gotten to the point I could hardly understand anybody on the phone. When you are answering a business phone call that is not good.
Hope that is the end of things for a long time. Don't want to have to replace parts.

I woke up one morning and my wife was leaning over me in bed. She said I slept later the usual she was checking to see if I was breathing. I said "I'm not that old". She smiled and said 'just checking".
Fun huh
