Morning turkey
So this morning Mrs hollers, "Robert' come quick." 5 turkeys are pecking their way thru the back yard.. as we are watching' we see a red fox creep into view back in the woods... shortly after' the fox comes out stalking the birds....he got within about 10 feet and the turkeys started towards him....they essentially made the fox stand down and he went back into the woods' looking for an easier, albeit smaller meal....we were really hoping to see hin get an early thanksgiving dinner....no picture of the fox...

Start feeding them and you can see them every day!!!! We feed about 50 each winter and they sleep in our trees at night. I think a fox might end up on the short end of the stick in a fight with a turkey.

I somewhat remember that the turkey was considered to be the national bird for the US because they were so fierce, then somehow the bald eagle was chosen.

Ben Franklin thought that the turkey, should have been the national bird.

I grew up on a farm in Northern Illinois during the 1940-60 period and never saw a wild turkey. Now, living in central Iowa we see them all the time. We had a flock of at least 20 hens graze across our backyard a few years ago, but just once. I see them walking down the center of a suburban street with an aggressive posture...not afraid of cars.
They are under pressure from the return of fox and coyotes who raid nests for easy pickings.
Iowa has both spring and fall hunting seasons.

I had a buddy years ago shoot a turkey and broke his wings but he was flopping around. So Allen runs up and grabs the turkey to ring his neck like a chicken. When that turkey turned Allen loose he looked like he had run into a barb wire fence.

When I started hunting along the South Platte in the early 60’s, I never saw turkeys. The first one I saw was in the 1970’s.
Nowadays, they’re all over the place and I see them almost every hunt.

I was checking out one of the deer feeders and as I walked up there were about 6 in a circle round the feeder waiting for it to go off.

Ambitious fox! I know of Coyote taking young part grown turkey.
Turkey were reintroduced in SW Michigan in the middle 1950s.
They are quite common nearly all over now, season and all.
And I can put a turkey feather in my hat.
Heck my Mother told of someone seeing a deer in the late 1920s and they put it in the paper! But, I digress.

Since y'all are talking turkey, thought I'd trot out "Cathy the Turkey" again. She was a beloved resident at the Phantom Ranch and the Bright Angel campground, at the bottom of the Grand Canyon National Park. She joined us for breakfast, scared me away, and entertained my friend Sylvia in the picture, who fed it.
She is mentioned here, in a ranger's journal:
“Later, talking to John while he’s checking permits, I see a turkey, a wild one roaming around.” He went on to comment: “It surprised me, the first turkey I’ve seen in the wild and such an odd place to see one. She came off the north rim in 1982 and has been hanging out ever since. Have you ever heard of Cathy the turkey? ... This turkey lived there nearly 15 years. ... She got blown down in a storm. I’ve actually seen them in Clear Creek and North Bass trail, so it’s not unheard of to have a turkey end up down there. I found her body when she died a few years later. She died up at Indian Gardens.”

We have turkeys here on the Big Island and I think on Oahu too, but there isn't a sustainable hunting population...yet.
There's quite a lot of pheasant around--Maui's got all you'd care to shoot but at a pretty steep price per bird. The skinned breast feathers make for beautiful hat bands--the old timers and paniolos (Hawaiian for "cowboy") treasure them.
