Part of it would have to be the commercial aspect of it. Candy and costumes and home decor, and, and, and, PUN'KINS! Don'tcha know.
All the movie help to keep the spirit alive and the feeling going. I think we can all agree it was a lot more fun and innocent celebration before the "Deer Park Candy Man" put poison in his kids candy to collect the insurance.
Small comfort that he was finally executed but some how justice was served because he was executed on October 31st. (don't remember the year.)

In mostly catholic Countries, like mine, Halloween is a non event. It's All Saint's Day on the first of November that is celebrated and, by antecipation, also the day of the dead that falls on the second of November. There are no decorated pumpkins and no masked kids going door to door. Of course in this global world "the day of the witches"(that is the name of our "Halloween") is getting more and more proeminent.

A: That was in 1974. One kid died. The spirit of Halloween recovered quite well . . .
2: He was executed on March 31, 1984 . . .

Well then I stand corrected. Don't know where I got that misinformation.

Grew up in Houston. Was 16 when this happened so it did not affect me, but my younger brothers and sisters never had the same fun time that I did after that. It definitely affected Halloween in Houston for years.
The kid he killed was his own son that he had taken out an insurance policy on to get him out of debt. The poison (cyanide) was in the large plastic pixie sticks that were handed out at the "good" houses. He gave poisoned sticks to others, but if I remember right, they did not eat it, before son fell ill. This was on the news for about a week or so before they arrested the Dad. I'm sure all the houses the kids went to were scrutinized with a microscope.
Remember the Candyman waste of space person claiming innocence up to the Halloween day they put him down 10 years later.

Which channels do you watch? I've not seen the ads or even hype for Heidi Klum's famous annual Hollywood party.
But I mostly see Discovery and History stuff and detective shows. Except for the pawn and junk collector and homestead shows

I don’t doubt it impacted Houston for a while. Here in flyover country, nobody gave it a second thought after we found out it was a psycho trying to kill his own kids . . .

JR has picked out his costume and the front door display.
We both plan on squeezing every ounce of fun we can out of this Halloween.

"It's The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown " won't be one of them.
I heard on the radio that for the 1st time since 1966 the cartoon won't be shown on CBS.
Something called Apple Plus TV is showing it this year. Which I don't have or want.
Sigh, another tradition down the drain.
Did I ever mention that I hate 2020?

Having seen the signs early we started collecting DVD's of the classics- "It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown" among others! There will be no "bah humbug" in my home!
(I also have many Looney Tunes cartoons!)

I guess Halloween is all over TV because what there is of Halloween will be on TV. Nothing in our routine is happening this year.

I remember as a kid in Cincinnati something happened and they made us do Halloween during the day.
My daughter loves October and watching all the horror movies on AMC.
The Halloween series of movies is her favorite...except for III Season of the Witch.
Three years ago in October on Friday the 13th her daughter went into labor. I called her around 8 and said she better deliver before midnight. She did.

Halloween is my favorite holiday. Its all about having fun!
Costumes, candy and hopefully a good scare or two.
No need to buy expensive presents, no need for fancy meals, no required interaction with questionable family.
My next door neighbor is also into Halloween big time. Every year she throws a big party for her grandkids and anybody else who wants to come. Lots of decorations and fun stuff. Every year we gather in her driveway. Roast hot dogs and marshmallows. Then sit back to wait for the kids to come and hand out candy. I really look forward to it every year.
Of course, this year, I have no idea just how its gonna work out. We'll just have to see.

A town near me here in Louisiana is having a Virtual Halloween this year. How is that going to work out?

I always enjoyed handing out candy to the kids on Halloween. But this year, my uncle and I had a discussion and determined that for us it would not be a good idea to have throngs of people coming to our homes. Just too much risk for us.

It's fun! Kids love it, although it's not what it was when we were kids back when. I love it.

I always like handing out candy. For the big kids it's like pay-off, and the younger ones are usually escorted by their parents. A lot of younger Trendies have been moving up here. I always have beer in case mom or dad needs one, and treats for the dogs. I used to like Halloween more than Christmas. It's a heck of a lot cheaper!

Halloween was great fun when I was a young kid. We roamed the area until late in the night without any of the worries of today. I remember getting older, though, and losing interest. But I was getting old enough to think about mischief.
That year, Mom stopped us in our tracks. My best friend Steve and I were talking about soaping windows and other sorts of troublemaking. We were so smart.... We carried on our discussion in code; Pig Latin to be specific. We assumed we were safe even though Mom was right there. Once we solidified our plans, Mom informed us - in Pig Latin - of our expected punishment. It never occurred to us that Mom could speak Pig Latin . . . .
