Default Amazing Randi

The Amazing Randi has died at the age of 92. I really enjoyed
seeing him expose all the fakes over the years, going back to
when he use to appear on Johnny Carson.
R.I.P. James Randi.

He was one of the greatest sceptics out there. Seeing him dismantle charlatans was a great thing to behold and to this day nobody ever truly took him up on his $1 million challenge.

RIP Mr. Randi

I loved his legendary skepticism. I can recall how he used to always exclaim that magicians made their living by lying to you - and unlike politicians they told you that they were going to do it up front!

A few years back I watched (what I think is) his last documentary on Netflix. Now I think that I'll go back and watch it again.

I was a big fan of his, he will be missed.

His takedown of Uri Gellar will always be remembered.

Just after getting out of the Marine Corps I enrolled at Kent State. I worked in the physics department as a lab tech. One of the Profs was working on the effects of neutrons on humans aka the neutron bomb. They used some type of ballistic gel as the target. Uri Gellar came to the campus to impress everyone. He was invited by one of the physics Profs. He claimed a lot of things. We challenged him to stopping a stream of neutrons. He said he could do it. Well the counter never stopped. His excuse was that he was tired. We had a good laugh.

I enjoyed watching him debunk claims. I think my favorite was him debunking "psychic surgery" on one of the late night talk shows. Graphic, but compelling.

I loved the Amazing Randi. His $1,000,000 challenge shut the mouths of many charlatans. For anyone who thinks ESP is real - why didn't anyone accept the challenge, predict the cards as they came off a deck, bend a spoon with their mind, or get some info out of a dead person only they would know and walk out with a million bucks?

He will be missed.

He was the subject of a Nova science program 10 or 15 years ago. Pretty amazing.

Quite awhile back I saw him dismantle a guy claiming he could find any hidden object. The guy was a real flake. He had Mr. Randi hold onto bandana and away the flake went running around dragging Mr. Randi with the bandana. He said he was receiving visions of where Mr. Randi hid the object via the bandana. Of course the flake didn't find Shinola. His excuse was airplanes, cars or radio stations were interrupting the flow of visions through the bandana.

I lived in Red Bank, NJ, for a number of years in the early 70s and Randi lived in Rumson, the adjoining town. I had the opportunity to watch him perform live - at the time he was primarily making a living as a stage magician. As part of that show, he offered to bring someone up on stage and perform a magic trick that would fool that individual but be obvious to everyone else in the audience - and he did! (It involved making a crumpled up piece of paper disappear - kinda hard to describe it in writing, but it did work as advertised.)

He was certainly an original and will be missed.

Once in s TV interview he described how he did a cold reading pretending
to be in contact with some departed love one. At the end of the show he
told the audience that it was all a fake. At that time some of the audience
members did not believe him and told him he really had the gift and just
did not realize it.
This just proves that some people believe what the want to and ignore all
the facts to the opposite.

This jogged my memory. I remember about 20 years ago when Randi debunked John Edwards who, at the time, was tv's psychic flavor of the month. John didn't last too long after Randi got done with him. Even South Park roasted Edwards.

Sadly, Peter Popoff, who was exposed by Randi on the Tonight Show, crawled out from whatever rock he ran under back then and is fleecing his flock of weak minded followers today.

I loved it when this guy field stipped Sylvia Browne like a rifle...slowly, piece by piece...and on BOTH TV and radio. You could tell he enjoyed doing that to her simply because of who she was...a cheap, third rate con. She refused to take his challenge despite his bending over backwards for her to do so.

He didn't take her down, though. She did that to herself on late night radio during the Sago mining disaster.

IIRC the legendary Houdini used to do the same thing as James Randi and he also went after these carnival fakes with a vengeance.

I always looked forward to and really enjoyed watching him on TV during my youth.

RIP, sir.
