Your first car
What was the first car that had your name on the pink slip?
Mine was a turquoise 1964 Thunderbird. The 390 wasn't much coming out of the gate but it could sure stretch its legs on the highway.
The cockpit was cool but definitely not designed for serious sparkin'.
What was your first?

1975 Toyota Corolla. By contrast, my buddies had 70's muscle cars. Had to get what I could afford!

1959, Austin Healey "bug-eye" sprite. It was a beat to death before I got it, but was a hoot to drive.

1984 Chevy Step-side.
Three on the tree.
I was griping today in fact about how hard it is to get stuff out of the back of my Ford F-150 4x4. I like a step side.

Fifty nine Chevy BelAir with a 283 power pack engine and a very rare 4 spd trans. Bought it in 63 and totaled it 6 months later! I was 17 YO at the time!

Mine was a black 1957 Ford Fairlane 2 dr ht rust bucket. Bought for $125 in 1970 at age 16. Had a 312 V8 with 3-on-the-tree + overdrive. I spent more time wrenching on it than I did driving it. My dad liked that part. The 312 dropped a valve so I swapped in a 390 w/C6 AT. Sold it in 1977. Don’t have a single photo of it.

Mine was a 1962 Sprite, and yes it was sooo much fun to drive, even though we always needed to push-start it.

1967 Ford LTD, in 1975. It was a step up from the '65 Chevelle my dad gave me before my Senior year of HS. The LTD had a 390, 4 door, burgundy w/vinyl roof, roll open wing windows (that's living' large), safety lights on all 4 doors killed my battery every time I cleaned the inside! Put in a good 8-track sound system. Even had the reverb you could hook up to make your car faster! Or more stupid-sounding! Traded it in on a '75 lot demo Buick Electra limited! P O S!

1959 Triumph TR3. Financed it with my re-enlistment bonus in 1962.
(My first car was a 1949 Plymouth my Dad paid $100 for.)

I do not have a picture but mine was a 1961 Chevy Nomad wagon. It had lots of miles on it and our neighbor gave it to me. Lots of rust but it got me to school and work for about 18 months before too many things broke at once.
Rusty1953 my uncle had a 65 T Bird in the same color as yours and my first new car was a 1979 T Bird in Midnight Blue.

69’ Triumph TR6 bought when I got out of the Army in 72’
Fun car! Used to trade occasionally with my best friend who had a 69’ Camaro 350 and hepped up.
He was crazy to do that. Just the cost in tires!
He’d use my TR for dates...lol

Didn't have my name on the pink slip. I was only 16. But it was a '36 Ford Coupe. 2-dr, 6-banger, 3 on the tree and the starter was a peddle on the floor to the left of the clutch. No pics...Not sure if cameras had been invented back then.
The first car with my name on the pink slip was a '62 Chevrolet Corvair Monaz. I called it my "Baby Vette". It was a fun car but the engine was in the back and that didn't seem to be a good idea. We had cameras by then but I don't have any pics of that either.
When I came home on leave from my first tour on Okinawa I bought it here in the Houston area and drove it out to my new duty station on Camp Pendleton. It is south of Los Angeles and North of San Diego. That is no place to be without wheels.

1959 Peugeot 403 4 on the column, while I was stationed at Loring AFB Maine in 1964. That thing didn't have enough power to get up the hills in Northern Maine.

My first car was purchased from my sister's BIL, when I was 16, for $900 bucks. It was a 1969 Chevelle Malibu with a mighty 307 CI V8. That sucker was loaded for '69. It was light green with a black vinyl top and rally wheels. (not mine in the picture, but identical)
Had a 2 speed powerglide floor shifter, power windows, power seats, A/C and was only 5 years old at the time. Of course it was the 70's, and I had to have some air shocks, wide tires, Cherry Bomb pipes and that lovely white angel hair in the rear deck with my triaxle Jensen speakers, ripping out the Doobie Brothers from my 8 track tape deck.
Oh how I mistreated that car, I wish I had been smarter, but i was just a dumb kid. Dad would just look at it and shake his head. Mom would say, "Well you're Daddy had to have his back bumper dragging the ground to look cool in our day." Which I still think looks good on the proper aged car.
The weird little rice burners that came after the muscle cars got phased out didn't make any sense to me. Wide but low profile tires that were pushed to their limit with spacers, those were odd looking to me. I'm stuck loving the old iron, like the '69 Mach I 428 CJ, 4 spd I got later in life, but sadly don't have anymore. Those days you could see a car's tail lights way out in front of you, and you knew what it was, year make and model.
Can't do that with many these days. Cool thread, making me wish I had that Chevelle again, in the condition it was in when I GOT it, not after I was through with it. Poor baby.........

1957 Chevy
2door hard top , 283 .
She was 13 yrs old when I bought her off a soldier on his way to VN .
Sold her when I enlisted and gave the $700 to my Ma .
After thinking about it , I sold it for $400 not $700 .

Bought a 1954 Chev Belair when I turned 16. Three on the tree and in great shape. Me and my buds went every where in that thing. Worked as a package boy in a grocery to afford gas and insurance. A friend of mine came up with the idea for us to drive to El Paso one weekend to see his girl friend. Lucky we didn't go because I had no idea how far it was and driving 8 hours one way was something I had no clue about. Another friend borrowed it one evening to go on a date He totaled it.

If you had a good imagination, a reverb system sounded just like stereo. I put it in my 1960 Impala, and with two speakers, it sounded pretty impressive.

'47 Chevy Fleetline
Jet black fastback with 12 miles of chrome.
99,000 miles when I bought it for $150 in August '69.
216 c.i.
3-on-the-tree with vacuum assist shifting -- not worth a darn first starting out when it was 40 below zero.
It had an auxiliary heater under the front seat that made the "living room couch" back seat mighty comfy at the drive-in movies!

57 Ford 4 door six in 1963. A real dog. The trans died on a Chicago expressway.
The shocks were so bad I couldn't go over 40mph. When I got the money, I upgraded to a 61 Pontiac LeMans Convertible. Nice little car. Many since then, some good, some bad.

1971 Olds Cutlass with the “Rocket 350” engine. 800 bucks. It served me well and faithfully through most of college, a year spent flunking out of USAF navigator training, then three years in Why-Not Minot.
I left it with my soon-to-be ex-wife, who gave it to my soon-to-be ex-mother-in-law. I never saw any of them again. I did miss the car.

Mine was a 1964 Alfa Romeo 2600 Sprint. A 2600 cc twin cam, 6 cylinder, 5 speed transmission, Brown exterior, Cream color all leather interior, and front discs with finned aluminum drums on the rear. Mine had steel wheels while this one has wire wheels.
I learned how to swear in Italian real quick!
The only color photo I have of it and why I learned to swear in Italian while doing repairs to it.

The year was 1960, my mother co-signed the note. The car was a 1957 Studebaker Golden Hawk, gold and white in color, 160mph on the speedometer, 289 V8 with McCullough supercharger which was actually a blower that forced air into the carburetor. That car remains my favorite till this day.

1959 Ford Custom 300 tudor sedan. 144cid six-banger, 3 speed column shift. rubber mats, no headliner, bare bones. Had to install my own radio & clock. Wasn't much to look at, but it did have a manual choke. Started every morning, regardless how cold.

The first car that was mine to drive was a '59 Ford Galaxie, but my name was not on the title. The first car under my name was a '65 Ford Galaxie.

Don't remember the year, maybe a '48 Jeep that I put a custom Turquoise/ matalic blue paint job on and had a white canvas full top made for it and as a finishing touch made a 2", full roll bar, painted black for the finishing touch, just in case I messed up and some slick chrome hub caps.
It saw a lot of beach parties.............

Mine was a turquoise 1964 Thunderbird. The 390 wasn't much coming out of the gate but it could sure stretch its legs on the highway.
The cockpit was cool but definitely not designed for serious sparkin'.
What was your first?

My first car was a 1928 DeSoto. It had wooden spokes in the wheels.
Paid $65 for it. Didn't keep it long at all. I tried out around 1930 vintage
Oldsmobile. Drove it to an event about ten miles from the lot that had it.
When I got ready to leave I backed out of the parking place, and the gears
stuck in reverse. I went all the way back to the sales lot, ten miles on U.S.
Highway 91, in reverse. Didn't buy that one. Then the keeper was a 1936
Chrysler club coupe. That meant a little crunched up back seat. I kept it
untill I went into the Air Force at age 17. I wrote home and had my Dad
sell it for me.

The first one I drove was a hand me down 1971 Buick Electra deuce and a quarter - huge v-8 transmission that slipped and it ate gas like crazy. My dad made me peel off the a**,gas or grass, nobody rides for free, bumper sticker I put on it. The first one I owned, was a 1968 Mercury Cougar, with a 351 Windsor. Had the vacuum opening headlights and the graduated rear turn signals. That car was in great shape. Paid 350 for it in 79. Ran the **** out of it and beat the heck out of it for 2 years and sold it for 300. I wish I would have taken care of and kept that car. It was really, really nice. Oh well, at least I had one.

A ‘66 or ‘67 (don’t recall exactly) VW type 3 fastback. Got around great in the snow as long as you didn’t freeze to death before you got to where you were going.
