Default Electric razors

How good are modern electric razors?

I prefer real razors, but wonder how close electrics can come.

Who uses them, by brand and model, and how satisfied are you?

What do better examples cost?

I use a Braun Series 3 Wet/Dry Electric Razor. Not as close as a blade, but pretty close. Plus much faster and simpler.

Mine also has the clip on attachments so I can trim my hair in between haircuts.

I use a Norelco, I think; the kind with 3 spinning heads with a pop-up trimmer. Works pretty good for me. Rechargeable, too, in case I need to shave in the car on the way to work. Before I retired. I never had a real beard so it's good for me.

I do have all kinds of razors but I do prefer clippers.... easier, faster and hard to mess up

They are a lot SAFER than the old twist open, double edge blade style, that your father grew up using, with Gillette Blue Blades.

I get a real close shave with the old double blade but sometimes, I will also draw blood, if not careful or a little too shaky.

Might take a little longer but they will do the job without water and lather.

I like the convenience of an electric razor but unfortunately, they irritate my face.

No such problem with a blade and I get a much closer shave.

Norelco is the best IMO. I've got an older one with triple concentric blades that is great. I believe triple blade ones are being phazed out. I've got a Braun and it too is good, but it doesn't flex around the contours of my handsome, multi faceted face so it gives me a razor burn.

I shave with mug & brush lather and a triple blade razor. About 15 years ago I heard a guy from Cleveland, Ohio talking about a battery powered shaver he invented. It sold a Walmart for $6 and used one AA Battery. He was very emphatic that the battery had to be full charge! I picked one up and had to train my face to accept it but it did a great job for getting rid of 5 O'clock shadow! But on my face a full 24 hour growth would bog it down. So I kept one at work for a year or two to keep me looking sharp for dates with the Mrs. and business appointments. Drop it once and you are out $6! As the multi blade razors got better I never replaced after the last drop. But It is nice to know they are available.

In my experience no electric shaver can give as close a shave as a blade. I prefer a blade but sometimes I just prefer the convenience and ease of shaving with the electric.

I don't suppose there is a brand of electric shaver that I haven't tried. My Norelco triple header is by far the best for me, my face and my beard. I also shave my head and some electrics just can't cut it. (pun intended) But my trusty Norelco triple header gets the job done on my noggin just as well as it does on my face.

It won't be the same for everyone I'm sure but that's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

One more vote for Norelco/Phillips. Not as close as My Gillete Fusion but good enough for walking the dog. Had a Remington before. Not very good.

Tried a bunch of electrics some decades past.
Unsatisfactory.

Mug, badger, and blade for 50 years.

Recommend : Lectric Shave first, then Norelco SensoTouch,
triple head. Replace head as needed. Fast shave.
Maybe every 6-7 shaves, to save time, clean up.

Retired now, less shaving, yeah !!
Had to start in 10th grade, Dad said no shave yet,
got 3 days off, Dad said well guess its time to start.
Miss my Dad.

I have been using Norelco shavers for over 50 years. Never had a problem. Dump the beard particles every day and I do remove the blades, brush, and wash out the parts every month or so.

I used a Norelco triple-head electric razor for a couple of years. Really not bad, but as others have stated, the electric razors just don't seem to get as close as the good ol' regular blade razor. Like M1A and Ivan the Butcher, I go with mug, brush, and regular razor now, but I think the electric razors are great if you don't have the time or just want a quick touch-up. Just my opinion though.

My dad started me w/a blade when I was about 14. Any time I tried an electric it irritated, but it takes less than five minutes w/the blade & lather so I never bothered to spend the money on an electric razor.

I've used a Norelco top-of-the-line 9000 series (9600 model, I think, but there are others) for several years. I can't speak for the lesser models, but mine will shave as close as a razor. That really surprised me; didn't think it was possible. I rinse the triple blades after every shave and that takes about ten seconds. Blades need replacement after about six months. They cost about $60.00 for real Norelco but are worth it. I wouldn't buy the the cheap facsimile blades; doubt they work nearly as well.

That's because you "tried" it but didn't give it a chance.

Buy a Norelco and give it a week or 2. Then, if you go back you'll find that the blade irritates your face and the Norelco was actually closer.

You’re not alone. I haven’t found an electric razor that worked well, especially on anything heavier than a 5 o’clock shadow. If I get tired of shaving I grow a beard.

My new Norelco 3 head job shaves closer than my old Norelco or a blade and it doesn't irritate my 75 year old baby face. Also rechargeable and you can use it in the shower. Model S5675

I didn't use an electric shaver for decades for two reasons; it was impossible to get a close shave and after about three days use, my face was irritated. All I can say now is that they've come a long ways in the last fifty + years and I couldn't imagine going back to a regular razor. A close shave with no irritation has become a reality with electric shavers, at least with the Norelco I have.

another vote for Norelco, I prefer the corded version ( too many bad experiences with rechargable's going bad on trips. or after flights) Unfortunately the only corded only ones don't have a pop up trimmer any more. I just replace the blades in it every few years

I hope you are not like the weekly news publisher in the little town where I grew up. I sure that you use your Bay Rum differently. That was when whiskey was available only from bootleggers. He had no problem drinking Bay Rum if whiskey was unavailable.
He trudged along with a forward slant and surprise, his nickname was HIC.
He always smelled like what he drank.

I used a single then double blade starting when I was 12. No way I would switch. But 56 years later last winter I had a stroke, wiped out my whole right side. Had to switch to electric; no way I can trust my left hand with a sharp exposed blade.

Luckily I found a well rated rechargable Phillips Norelco 3500 three head electric. With LectricShave first, it does a good enough job. It's a wet/dry but I've not used it wet yet.

Search for this on Amazon: Philips Norelco Shaver 3500 S3212/82

I tried a Braun about 20 years ago for a while. It was okay. But I find, and I have a fairly light beard, that the disposables, or the multi-blade-change-out-the-blade cartridge work better for me than electrics.

My guess is it depends on your beard, and want ya wanna accomplish. (Light beard or exceedingly hirsute; zippo beard vs a bit of shadow is okay.)

If T-Star is looking for convenience, I’d say electric. But, he is particular about the ladies, and about his appearance, so he may do better sticking with a blade....

It’s a personal choice, I think.

I don't shave every day but my most-used razor is a Braun Series 7 electric razor. It will give me a close shave but I don't feel as "clean" as I do as when I use a blade. If you are going to switch to an electric razor from using a blade you absolutely must give it 30 days before you give up on it - it will take your face and beard at least that long to get used to one so don't be disappointed after only a shave or two.

On the occasional weekend when I shave I will use a safety (single blade) razor like my father used. I have an entire collection of classic and modern safety razors, my favorite being the Gillette "Fatboy" adjustable, but since the ones I own are classics I don't use either of them but maybe once a year. My most commonly used safety razor is the Oristo by Stashed and Found - built like a tank (literally good for generations), entirely stainless steel, and gives an exceptionally close yet comfortable shave.

I have a few badger hair shaving brushes (and a few synthetic ones as well) and a nice selection of shaving soaps - the best by far being Proraso cream in the tube from Italy.

When I was younger I tried a straight razor a few times, but now that I am on a blood-thinner I decided to quit trying. I've attached a quick photo of my antique straight razor collection with this post - I have some real classics from Solingen (Germany), Japan, England, Sweden, and the USA. I've got a few more not in this picture. Purchased a leather strop a few years back and learned how to strop my razors before use - when I actually used any of them, that is.

I wish it were so for me, Jim.

I've actually owned and used two Norelco "Triple Headers" back in my working days because I was always in a hurry and the electrics saved time.

The first was a Norelco cordless that I used until the batteries finally refused to recharge and the second was a corded model.

I used one, then the other, for umpteen years.

Convenient?

You bet!

I wanted to like them, and the Norelcos gave me the best shave of any electric, but they both irritated my face, no matter how much I used them.

Using a Wahl at the moment. Never used anything but a electric in 40 or so years of shaving. About time for a new one.

Modern electric razors are good.

I use a "wet" Philips(I think it's Norelco over there) AquaTouch S5420/06. Meaning you put on shaving cream or gel as with a conventional razor(I also use a 5 blade Gillette Fusion). this way face doesn't get irritated(use to get that with the "dry" ones specially on Summer).

I use a Braun Series 7 -- and have for years. As others have stated, not as close as a blade. But as my beard is now all gray, it is not noticeable. I can't remember the last time I shaved with a blade.

I switched to a Braun series 7 a few years ago, and love it! The key is to shave before your morning shower not afterwards, your face will be much smoother. I also let it run in it's automatic cleaner solution/recharger after every shave so it's like new each morning. An electric shaver is so much quicker and cleaner.

Several years ago I got a blood clot and the doctor put me on a blood thinner and told me to start using an electric razor. I bought a Remington and that was the worst thing I've ever used to shave. After a few tries I decided there was not any way to bleed to death from a razor cut so I went back to my regular razor. Larry
