It Ain't Over Yet.
We've got another hurricane headed this way. We've been lucky on the last two. They were projected to hit Brooklyn, Ms. but both of them turned and wrecked Many McNeil's area. The one entering the Gulf now is projected to hit this area. Ya'll pray for Many.

Well, in the next week or so we have a hurricane, Halloween, a blue moon and a time change to look forward to. What could go wrong with this to look forward to?

Been a bad year for the island.
Most of the dunes have been washed away.
But no direct hits....You boys across the river
have been hammered this season.

Rough year for y'all, even a close one produces a lot of prep for a little slop.
Quick mover, now supposed to turn into a snow storm once it moves into the northeast.

I've built four houses since I reached adulthood. I helped rescue people from a flood as a Boy Scout. I learned then to build on high ground and did so with all four houses, including the one I've been in for the last 20 years. It doesn't stop the wind though but I did things to minimize the damage. I put braces on all of my rafters. I used heavy duty shingles with twice the number of roofing tacks, all put in by hand, no nail guns or staples. The worse storm I've been in as a homeowner was Hurricane Katrina. I lost one wind turbine. I found it a half mile down the road, straightened it out, and put it back on the roof. I worked both Katrina and Camille as a LEO. Riding around in 165 MPH winds is quite an experience. I don't think this one will be near as bad as Katrina or Camille, but from now on I'll be watching from the sidelines. I stay stocked up year round (especially after the "Great Bourbon Shortage of Hurricane Katrina" when my friend and fellow forum member Max and a little brown truck provided relief) because you never know what you're going to get where I live. We've had most everything except earth quakes and forest fires. We burn our forests off frequently. Not only does it prevent severe fires, it helps the trees grow and provides browse for wildlife. Just in case, all the loose items around the house are picked up or tied down. The generator is ready because the power already goes out frequently, mostly drunks hitting power poles. Thanks for your concern.

You be careful Charlie and let me know if you need anything. The Beer Nut store is closed until after the holidays due to the virus. You can order online however.

Hope this thing fizzles out sooner than later. As a Florida born and raised old guy I know what you guys are having to deal with this year and it is no fun at all.

As Ron White once said with such laconic clarity;
"It's not that the wind blows-it's WHAT the wind blows"
The only thing I am afraid of is no electricity and skeeters afterwards. Drinking warm scotch while sweating your backside off swatting skeeters is no fun!!

We are inside the cone, same for the fishing camp down in Cocodrie. Looks like we'll be on the "good", west, side of the eye so hoping for not much damage. Wednesday and the night should be interesting. The local sugar mills are shutting down for a couple of days, I'm thinking harvesting will start again, maybe Thursday or Friday.

Crazy, crazy weather year to go along with COVID and the political "silly season".
I removed a foot of snow from my truck this morning in order to check on the heat at the church. Also heard that one Disaster Relief site in Louisiana had to shut down after 19 volunteers tested positive. 2021 can't come soon enough.

We've still got power but the way it's flickering I suspect it will go out sometime before this is over. So far, lots of rain, some wind gusts in the 30-40 MPH range, but the eye wall is still SE of us, probably 40-50 miles. I hope it weakens fast. This thing may merge with the storm Billy and bring a lot of rain to a lot of folks. Power flickering again. Satellite TV is off and own. Looks like the eye will pass somewhere near us, still don't know on which side. If it passes East we get the weaker part of the storm. If it passes West it will be stronger. I'll try and get back in an hour or two. I may have to hook my computer up to the generator first. Our power was out for 11 days after Katrina. I managed to find a generator on the 10th day and still have it. It's 15 years old but still runs good and looks new as I keep it stored in a climate controlled area. After Katrina, we were too busy helping other people so we didn't have much time to help ourselves. I lost two freezers full of game, fish, and lots of other food, over $1,000.00 worth. I think I'm ready this time. This storm is nowhere near as powerful as Katrina.

Zeta passed by here late this afternoon, we had some rain and wind maybe 30-40 mph. No damage, no power outage, we were not far from the eye but on the west, "good", side. It made landfall not too far from the fishing camp in Cocodrie I'll try to get down there tomorrow to see what, if any damage.
I hope Zeta is the last for 2020.

Just heard from my grand daughter in Chalmette. The storm has passed and they are safe, a few shingles off the roof and some fence panels down.

I'm a little late replying because I went to the Jack Daniels distillery in Lynchburg, Tn. after the storm. Power was out two days and the community water went out with it. Both are back on now. We had some 50-60 MPH wind gusts. No damage to my house or buildings but I have a lot of trees around and have a lot of limbs to pick up. Some will have to be cut with a chain saw. My next door neighbor, who lives about 1/4 mile from me, had a large oak tree blow across the road. Jr. and I took our chainsaws over and helped the firemen cut the tree up. The eye came right over my house. It got still and quiet and we could see stars and seagulls that don't ever hang around here. It started back up in a few minutes but the wind wasn't as strong. I talked to Demon, my ex wife. She lives in Gulfport and they got hammered pretty good. I'm 45 miles north of Gulfport. Things turned out well enough we were able to take our planned trip to Tennessee. Thanks for your concern.
