Talking Jim Jones shooting Range - Payson Arizona...

Since moving up to Payson from Tucson a couple of months ago I have been planning to check out the Jm Jones Shooting Range located just a couple of miles south of Payson. It is right off of AZ 87 {The Beeline Highway} down a mile and half of dirt road. Went out during the week and was told to come back on a Saturday morning as the range will not only be open but there would be plenty of RSO's two get me signed up and dialed in.

Rolled in this morning at 0845 and was the only shooter there. The RSO explained that if I paid my $50 today it would be good until the end of the year but... if I came back next Saturday that same $50 would get me in for the rest of 2020 and all of 2021. Well that was a no-brainer and for $5 I got to shoot this morning as well. Next week I will get my gate pass and then can use the range for free 365 days a year.

The facilities are awesome, nicest facility I've ever seen. Spent about an hour and half running through few hundred rounds in 4 of my carry pistols; the S&W 9 Compact, my 649 SS Snubbie 357, the new Beretta Tomcat 32 auto and my Bersa thunder .380. It had been a while since I shot the other three and the Beretta is brand new. I quickly found that it shoots high and a little left and the sights are not adjustable but, it was very predictable and consistent so a little compensation led to some tighter groups on the last target. Actually the Bersa does this to a lesser degree but the 9 and the 649 are dead nuts on so all in all was a good time.

Next week I will bring the Dan Wesson 6" 44 mag and my Ruger 357 for some serious cannon fun. It will be nice to just jump in the truck or climb into my Rzr and be at the range in ten minutes anytime I feel like shooting. I had heard nothing but good things about this facility and was not disappointed. I can't post pics here but Google it, I'm sure you will be as impressed as I was and if you are ever in the area it is open to the public on Saturdays and definitely worth your time.

That’s great news !

My local range closed down, it was eight minutes door-to-door.

Now it’s 25 miles to a stuffy indoor range, or 40 to a nice outdoor facility.

Question Huh?

Sorry guys, I just don't get all of the cool aid **** comments? Did my positive experience somehow offend? If you think I'm embellishing follow my suggestion and look them up on line. I can assure you there is nothing to offend to be found there. I think $50 a year for virtually unlimited access is a deal... what am I missing here?

Jim Jones? The guy who had all of his followers commit suicide by drinking poisoned grape Flavor Aid (Rusty is correct of course) in Guyana?

From the wiki article on the Jonestown Massacre:

"With that reasoning, Jones and several members argued that the group should commit "revolutionary suicide" by drinking cyanide-laced grape-flavored Flavor Aid. Later-released Temple films show Jones opening a storage container full of Kool-Aid in large quantities. However, empty packets of grape Flavor Aid found on the scene show that this is what was used to mix the solution, along with a sedative. One member, Christine Miller, dissents toward the beginning of the tape."

Good old Rev. Jim Jones, the inspiration for the commonly used phrase "drinking the Kool-Aid" that we frequently use to describe those people who willingly follow along with stupid trends or groups.

(Notice how I cleverly avoided any mention of politics!)

OK - I don't care who your new range is named after, sounds like a good deal. Enjoy!

PS - I would still bring my own beverages

First thing I thought about as well. With all the name changing maybe they should consider it also. No, leave it for the man it is named for as that has to be a very common name.

I looked it up!! It looks like a great place to shoot, much better than our little outdoor range. I'll bet it stays busy. It's only 1025 miles from my house, so its a little far for saturday shooting.

I would agree with this 100% but some people don't know a good thing when they see it.

When our club, with multiple ranges and also offering members unlimited access, raised the yearly dues from $30 to $35 some of the members complained. I'd be a member there if the price was 10 times that. I consider it an unbelievable bargain.

Sounds like a great deal and a good range.

However, I think for every person that is old enough to remember and even many that aren't, the cool aid thing was the first thing they associate with the name Jim Jones. That's unfortunate as there are probably many people named Jim Jones in the world, as common as both names are. Although, I'd imagine the combination of the two names decreased in popularity after the incident.

Now is certainly the time for the thin-skinned (as well as those crusty, old hard-shelled types) amongst us to man-(or WO-man, or HU-man)up and LAUGH AT OURSELVES!

Way back when, in those non-WOKE 70's, humor didn't need to pass the pc-test that seems now to be mandatory... Remember when Sat Nite Live was actually funny? The National Lampoon?

Cheers!

P.S. If I have unintentionally offended anyone with the insensitive nature of my comment, rest assured I strive to NEVER offend ANYONE... unintentionally!

I think it would be great if the folks that run it would poke a little fun at themselves while also creating another revenue stream by having a bunch of targets made up with the Rev. Jim Jones' picture on them. I'd sure buy one so I could take a few shots at that creep!

After the Jonestown massacre, the task fell to a U.S. Army mortuary team from Fort Bragg to go to Guyana and take care of the bodies of the men, women, and yes, children who had perished. I had a fascinating conversation with a couple of the soldiers not long after that for a newspaper article I wrote.
