Smile ONLINE DATING

Would someone explain what "On Line Dating" is ?
This is a term that I was recently asked and I am at a lose what this is.

Thanks,

It's when you come to the forum here, post the SN, and ask someone to look up your pistola's DOB for ya.

(Also, though less common among this crowd, I assume, people use internet sites, apps and services to find romantic partners.)

For me, it is when I go on to the Colt site and enter a serial number to determine a date of manufacture. To some others it seems there may be other people involved looking for romance.....

Not unlike some gun sellers, where "as new" and "only fired a few rounds", "original finish", are a real stretch of the words.

I once had a "friend" who posted my address on a site. I had a LOT of Russian "babes" trying to get me interested. I don't know how they do it but I de-listed myself from them at least 50 times over the next two years before I really got rid of them. I got some really nice pics from Russky gals looking for a nice "Americanski boy" or something like that...

It’s a great way to interview a larger prospective candidate group.

Online dating is "interesting". Most of my tales cannot be related here due to forum rules. You need brave pills for sure. My first online date had me considering celibacy with occasional Internet porn as an alternative to finding a partner after my first wife passed.

My first in-the-wild interaction was with a girl who had *just* left what can only be described as a cult, led by her parents.

Realizing within minutes that there was no romantic future, the remainder of the meal was spent with me held in rapt attention by the [bordering on insane] tales of her upbringing.

We shook hands and parted company, wishing each other good luck...and I somehow felt better about my own station in life.

About 2 months later, I met my wife-to-be. Now she be.

My entry into the online dating was interesting.
1st Guy, OK, Nice Guy, then moved way out of the area
2nd, turned out to be married
3rd, tightwad disaster
4th, I stood him up
Seemed like guys close to my age where looking for
a Nurse and a Purse.
With the things I like and do, I should be some guys ideal woman but
I give up.

I met my now wife over 2 years ago on a singles website. There were close to 1,000 ladies on the site, and every time I looked through them, I always came back to "Cathys" profile. We texted for about a week before we actually spoke on the phone. We finally decided to meet and it was just magical for us both! 3 weeks later, I proposed; 2 months later we were married. I've never been happier, and she says the same. It can work, we just got lucky (actually both our prayers were answered) and we are both thankful each and every day! :-)

I'm 61 and got divorced a few months back and gave it a try for the first time and used a site called Bumble where the ladies choose the men. I had a bunch right away that showed interest and I was interested in 8 or 9 of them and after 2 marriages I swore I would not commit to any woman for at least a year or maybe forever. I went on four dates one weekend and I was freaking exhausted and they were all pretty nice and attractive and I had other women I was corresponding with but the second woman I had a date with I REALLY liked! It wasn't long and we told each other we didn't want to see other people and just each other and its still going pretty good.

I'm glad that it has worked out well for some of you.
I've met my share of disasters, but otherwise, it pretty much boils down to
one who only had the chemistry, and one that had everything but the chemistry. Spent too much time with the first one for sure, and probably should have given the second one a better try and a better me. The nicest partner material of all my many dating encounters, but alas, that chemistry thing is important...or too important?
I also didn't know how to balance being with her and caring for my invalid slowly dying mother, and also had doubts about dealing with what would be her teenage son in another six years, when I predicted that I would be a 66 y.o curmudgeon without much patience.
The caregiver role lasted much longer than I expected and was more demanding than I expected....and I did become a 66 y.o without much patience.

I used to belong to an online dating site.

It's called "Facebook "

It's free, but you will pay dearly if you succumb to temptation.

All those people who are looking 30 years in the past and saying "What the hell happened to me?" And trying to relieve their youth.

Glad I didn't get caught up in it.

Fate and karma can sometimes be your friend.

Default I always chuckle

when somebody posts "Need Help Dating Model-18 (or 21, or even a 36). I would need help dating a model of that age, too . But, I am not gonna help with your date And, if someone needs help dating a model - 66 .... I'm gone.

PS: I hope I don't offend any of our experienced members. Just a little fun If I could find an ex-model 66, I would probably be quite happy

Was not a bad time of my life. Had lots of nice ladies to meet. Not being a real out going type it was best way for me. Just have to be careful. Ended up remarrying one of my ex wives. All is working quite well.

Having interviewed hundreds of people during the course of my career, I know that the following is true:

Once you get to three marriages, one has likely been in Las Vegas.

Once you get to five, two are to the same woman.

There are slight variables, but the above would survive a peer reviewed study . . .

Everyone finds "the lady of my hopes, dreams, and prayers on an online site." Guys, too. However, when you meet them you find out it isn't what you were promised.

As Daffy Duck would say, "I insist that you shoot me now!"

Did that fifteen years or more ago, as a lonely widower. Kinda fun, but the takeway ended up there are a lot more damaged people out there than I would have imagined. Choose wisely.

Same here. My wife and I found each other on Match/dot/com. She's perfect. I could not be happier (It's better to be honest! She'll figure out your flaws and foibles in no time anyway). No better way to find that one in a million. Where else you going to look?

I would never do online dating after how bad it worked out for one of our past well known forum members. My age makes that easy though. Of course my brother in law found his second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth wife online so it must have some value?

I've been divorced for sixteen years, and have done a bit of online dating between two longterm relationships. It's a hit-or-miss situation. Red flags for me are women who have either never been married or who've been married multiple times; women who only want to talk about their idiot ex-husbands; or women whose social/political views are radically different from mine.

I'm currently seeing a gal I met online last summer...we have a lot of common interests, and get along really well. She's widowed, is ten years younger than I am (which doesn't bother her at all), is a strong 2nd Amendment advocate, financially independent, very easy to talk with, and likes high-performance cars...this could last a while!

My younger son met his wife through a dating website. She made the first move: messaged him to tell him she liked his profile. They met in 2014, got married in 2018, and are just crazy about each other.

All I know about online dating is what I hear from my son who's 29. He would like to meet a single woman without kids and that apparently rules out 98% of those in his age group. He'd also like them to have a job which takes out the rest.

Not being sarcastic. I’m sure there’s a group of 29 year old women saying the same thing. The older we get, the more baggage we got.

Several years back I dabbled with on-line dating. My experiences were not bad just disappointing. Most if not all of the ladies in my age range were OLD. Checking ladies who were 10 – 20 years younger most were members of the “First Wives Club,” who were interested in finding someone who would support them in the fashion they Wished to become accustomed to.

I have a particularly good friend who met a Lovely lady on-line and they have been happily married 14 years.

I do have two Lady Friends and we enjoy doing things together from time to time. As nice as that is I’m very content being solo for the most part.

Ya know, I'm on #3 (22 years this Saturday, the 28th), I'm happy and she has a job! But, if I were to meet a lady who's 5 husbands passed away and knows a lot about guns, date #1 would be to check her basement for fresh concrete. Also, random flower beds in the yard!

My father taught me online dating when I was a kid. You scribble a message about your club size on the rock face outside your cave. "Mate wanted, dinosaur bait need not apply".
Got my ex wife using this method. Found out later she was clubbed by many before and after our mating ceremony.

You and Kurusu just wrote the script for a friend's situation. When his wife died without final interment arrangements, and the adult children were uninterested, he bought a shovel, drove out in the country, and burried her ashes under a tree. Then he returned the shovel to the store.

No personal experience with dating sites, but I witnessed one of my granddaughters use one during a visit to us in SC.
In just a few minutes, she had a dinner date, and spent a few hours at a downtown restaurant in pleasant conversation with a local guy. Neither was looking for a spouse, and they were happy having the company of a peer to talk to for a few hours.

"A nurse and a purse"-I like that.
On line dating just the 21st Century version of the personal ads of years gone by.
Seems to me that as long as people don't rush in and be blinded you can do OK.
I think people are a little too romantic these days, need to learn to step back, take a longer view-be more clear headed and even hard hearted. I recall one forum member, described himself as a comfortably well off and handsome widower in his 50s, met an attractive 30 something woman, she came on a little too strong, he talked about his properties, showed her some but then said it was all in trust for his children, she dropped him like a stone.
I have studied Russian, some familiarity with the country, the culture, I wouldn't bother with these Russian girls, a lot of them are nice looking but
their values are very warped. Girlfriends, maybe, wives-NO!

I got some really nice pics from Russky gals looking for a nice "Americanski boy" or something like that...
Had an associate who got hooked up with a dear lady from the former Soviet Union. She sent him all sorts of...um...uh..."provocative" pictures. Anyway, he flew over to Russia and in less than an hour they were "romantically involved." She came over to the states and they got married.

Right after that, she started a whirlwind shopping spree. First, bought a $500 pair of shoes. Then she had him order a new car for her with a custom paint job. Then she had to enroll in driving school because she didn't know how to drive. They then bought a nice sail boat.

She got pregnant, had a baby, and became a U.S. citizen. Right after that, she divorced him. Marriage didn't last five years.

She got everything. He had to sell the house, boat, and whatever else of value he had. She wanted to move to the "big city," so he had to start paying for a luxury apartment in the bay area of California.

Last I heard, he was working two jobs in order to pay alimony, child support, and to just make ends meet.

Unfortunately, Comrade, he was warned but didn't heed the warnings. As a result, I'm pretty sure he's staying away from on-line dating sites.

I can assure you that at 29, he ain't seen nuthin' yet. It only gets harder.

Double that number, and the issues multiply.

Nearing 68 myself as a single dude, it's my firm belief that one's twenties is the time for meeting a lifelong mate. The older you get, the more complicated it can get.
Health issues, ex issues, kid issues, emotional damage, etc.etc.

The internet does however, allow you to process quite a few, where you can increase your odds of finding a keeper. A "Miss right", not just a" Miss right now"

If these online dating services work on a commission basis, your brother would bring a lot of value to the table!

(Maybe you need to advise him that old saw about next time he finds a woman he doesn't like rather than get married just buy her a house.)

I tried it. It was interesting to say the least. All the women who matched me liked fishing, hunting, and camping of course. A few questions usually confirmed mostly they were fishing for a husband and hunting a rich one to camp so they could camp in style. Actually it was kind of fun if you keep your head screwed on. Meeting people is interesting. The physiologist made me feel like I was a patient in short order, the computer geek was too busy to do anything real, one woman didn't have the guts to tell her son in law to get out when he was bleeding her dry. In their 50s and 60s they all had a story as did I. Just wasn't finding what I was looking for.

Any way being male I put an ad on Craig's list for a woman who was just looking for nothing but, an occasional hop in the sack. No obligations and I wouldn't fix her car. Met one for lunch to check each other out, went to a motel and we have been together 6 years now. LOL

My late wife and I were together over 25 years. Went to my place the first night we met.

Been 5 for me. HS sweet heart, mother of my kids, the woman who made me what I am today, a great lady with bad genes, and my current wife. No Vegas, no re runs,2 divorces, 2 times widower and here I am married

Rick I forgot that one, it was a match made in Hell from the very start. A real heart breaker for how many?

That was a tragedy. But, I think it had little to do with the internet or online dating. I guess they met that way, but think of all the matches — romances and marriages — that met before the internet and ended in tragedy.

From my reading of this thread, it seems to me that online dating is just a newer way to meet people. People, the human condition, the good and the bad, the crazies and the jewels, the search for a partner, the ups and downs of relationships, the successes and the failures, seem pretty much the same regardless of the venue where people meet.

I thought the purpose of dating is to find what you like-and don't like. And find out if she likes you. I dropped one girl because she was always doing things to needle and provoke me.
And I thought it is just another way to see who's out there. You still have to meet them in person. And I am not a big believer in whirlwind courtships.
